Any Sifters bought an iPad? (Blog Entry by dag)

RedSky says...

I'm waiting for a well priced and usable Windows 7 pad. Unfortunately most of the ones out right now really aren't up to scratch. Something like this would fit the bill quite nicely, but it doesn't come out until next year:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/31/asus-eee-pad-official-intel-culv-processors-windows-7-and-a-1/

Proprietary OS besides purely a Windows 7 overlay just isn't going to cut it. Just seems like an unnecessary hassle to have to learn an entirely new OS, and potentially buy software you already have on your desktop for it when familiarity is around the corner.

The iPhone's OS makes sense. It would be impractical to consider either attempting to run desktop applications or a desktop UI on such a small form factor. Hell, I'm considering getting one now that the older models can be found for very cheap. But when you're in 10" territory, inching (apologies) towards the lower end 13" laptops, there's really no excuse. Besides exploiting their Apps Store for revenue, and besides wanting to not encroach on their other product ranges that is.

Right now Apple is doing well because besides being a marketing and cultural behemoth it's tapped into a niche which previously barely existed, certainly not in the mainstream. Sure tablet PCs have existed for years but not relatively lightweight, compact and highly functional, or at least not all at the same time. I have no doubt when the other big manufacturers start rolling out their Windows 7 alternatives, assuming they get their touch interfaces right, the iPad as it is now, will be forgotten.

Street Figher : Legacy

residue says...

Yea, they were supposedly doing flying kicks at each other, they just forgot the forward momentum part

I'm not sure why the felt like playing air-footsies at the end

I think that one of the games showed 2 silhouettes doing a flying kick against each other in the intro, just before overlaying the street fighter logo on it. Could be wrong though, as I can't find any proof from a quick search.

"'Downfall' Hitler Parodies" Yanked by YouTube (Parody Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Although many of the parodies were funny, there were two things that I always disliked about them.

1. They kind of trivialise a great scene, a great performance and a great movie.

2. They make the assumption that most of the world hears the actual meaning of the audio as gobblty-gook.

To get perspective on the second point, imagine if there was a German craze to to take a pivotal scene from the The Hurt Locker and overlay humorous culturally relevant German subtitles - not so funny -perhaps even offensive to native English speakers? Perhaps.

Making a Ceramic Mug

NordlichReiter says...

Innuendo, this whole video is full of it.

Shape, and smooth. Pinch and pull. Do it from all angles, and make a groove down the middle. Even and consistent handle, keep it really wet, lubricated. If you get to much friction. Length and thickness that you want.

Guys...

1. Take this video's Audio Track
2. Find a strange Sex Scene
3. Overlay this audio onto the Sex Scene
4. ?????
5. PROFIT!

Blank Videos - Liveleak & Longtailvideo problems (Sift Talk Post)

burdturgler says...

I have flash 10,0,45,2.

Something is being blocked. But I don't know where. I'm only using the basic XP firewall and have taken this machine off the router.

"LongTail Video, home of the JW Player, is the premier destination for online video solutions. We offer the #1 open source FLV and Silverlight players along with plugins, skins and a self-serve ad solution that empowers publishers to monetize their videos. Our players have streamed billions of videos and our AdSolution serves millions of pre-roll, overlay mid-roll and post-roll ads daily."

Everyone of the videos I can't play connects to plugins.longtailvideo.com. I can play every other video here. ugh.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that. I still can't rerad the text but I'll try to at least lable it's language of origin. My brother-in-law is Chineese and both his kids have learned to read and write in Chinese (They are primarily english speaking). It looks so complicated when I watch them doing their workbooks. They are lucky though, that's a skill that will open many doors for them...

I have to say..., I personally wouldn't know the difference between Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Kanji, Tagalog or other similar texts - I can't read them and I admit wouldn't know one from another - so the text overlays, to me, just says "Not English, definitely Asian" - I hope that isn't offensive, it's just fact!
>> ^mentality:
Yeah seriously, you'd think the chinese subtitles overlaying the original korean text would tip him off. -1 (if only) for arr asian rook arike.

Quick and dirty guide to telling Asian characters apart:

(*note: Kanji = chinese characters used in Japanese.)
Chinese: really complicated looking with lots of strokes.
Japanese: more simple looking with fewer strokes
Korean: also simple looking but looks more regular and geometrical with lots of little circles. The little circles are uniquely korean.

Transparent Laptop Screen

L0cky says...

He did say the screen was on the notebook for demonstration purposes. I very much doubt that Samsung is aiming this at general purpose PC use, and the examples he gives seem more appropriate - widgets on your windshield, office window etc. Ie context relevant information.

Overlay on your windshield seems the most exciting route. A GPS currently draws a coloured line to your destination on a small screen map; imagine if it did this over the actual road in front of you...

Here's an idea, overlay glasses.

There have been some OLED glasses created, though I couldn't find enough information about their viability. I'd think that focus would be a problem with something so close to the eye, but perhaps they already solved that.

There have also been some prototype contact lens displays produced, but I don't know what methods they use to produce the image.
