Steve Jobs dies. His life in 60 seconds.

westy says...

It made me sad that he is dead which is pretty fucked up and shows you how shallow emotions can be, logically I don't care that he is dead not any more than any other person that has died.

We have this weird artificial image of him I don't even know who he is , he is probably as much a cunt as he is a nice guy.

Just because sum-one can be more easily attributed for there effect on the world should not mean we should necessarily celebrate them more or less than other people , or morn them more ore less than other people.

Shimmering Silver, the Stuff of Stars

deathcow says...

Slag... flux.... lead... there are many secondary materials used when smelting precious metals. Lead is used to scavenge the precious metal from ore. Flour can be used as a source of carbon to assist in fusion of the metal. The black impurities are... not silver.

This goes into exhaustive detail including the choice of boneash for a cup:

Obama Has Dictatorial Power To Confiscate Europe's Gold

All paper currency is perceived value. That's the point of it.
If that's the point of a currency, then what's the point to your original post?
>> ^ChaosEngine:

It has no intrinsic worth, but it's part of the social contract that we collectively endow it with value.
So WE collectively devalued the US dollar 98% the last 40 years? We did this... to further a social contract? So it helps people to free them from 98% of their wealth???
If anything, subscribing to a fiat currency based on debt is in DIRECT violation of any social contract.
>> ^ChaosEngine:

If you want to trade gold as a currency, go ahead
Can't unless people have the right to refuse payment in US Dollars. Legal tender laws prevent it.
>> ^ChaosEngine:

It's just not a very good standard. Iron would be better.
Let the market decide then. Iron ore is not fungible. Plus iron is consumed. Gold is held.
>> ^ChaosEngine:

If you have tonnes of iron, you can build stuff.
As for what you measure energy cost in, well, I don't know about you, but I measure energy in joules.
I'm starting to think you're not even being serious.

I don't agree that the video would've been unremarkable with a bunch of young guys instead. Compare it with this one, I think most people who like the one will also like the other - http://videosift.com/video/Madrid-Longboard
Now this one has had a few more votes, but the other one never got a promote (which this one has) and the other one is twice the length, and it's always harder to get people to watch longer videos (well, it takes longer!!!).
Speaking for myself, I would certainly have upvoted the exact same video with guys instead of girls, and as at least one straight girl has voted for this I don't really think I'm going out on a limb to say I'm not probably alone here.
Watch it again to enjoy it for the excellent production values, and great soundtrack.>> ^TickleMyElmo:
It's a bit sad that a video that would be totally unremarkable with a bunch of guys is so unusual with girls. I'll have to bookmark this to show my twin girls when they get a little older.

If this video was with guys people might have still enjoyed the music and the camera editing but i'm pretty sure people would comment on how slow they are moving and how they don't really do any note worthy ore extraordinary tricks to justify the filming of it in what seems to be a promotional video.

Art table milled from a 400kg slab of aluminium

As opposed to the refinement of aluminum from ore, the recycling of aluminum is quite efficient, so it's not that wasteful. Also it's for an art piece.
Was Michelangelo wasteful of the beautiful marble slab when he sculpted David?

well in this instance i think a huge slab of metal with slighty beveld edges would actualy have been more of a spectical than the end product due to the fact its not something we see often.

in the time david was sculpted it would have been the hight of technoligy/ablity to make the human form like that where as now we can work stuff using computers to an unbelievable level of detail its not really a spectical to see something like that formed. ( i mean there is just as much spectical in a CG model as there is in the real world cutting of it)

The thing is the end result of what he did to this table was not something mind blowingly original and the end table is haedly the most practical of tables having a ditch in it. granted for some person some place they would love the form of this table , but i think there are probably thousends of people that given a chance to have there 3d model /cad drawing turned into a phisical object would have ended up with something as nice if not nicer looking but allso more practical.

but happy to repost for you.
i'm just looking at this in a theoretical sense, based on mass ice melt and it's likely repercussions. apparently others have looked at this more thoroughly than i have. If i had known this earlier, it would have saved time pointing out fairly obvious things to rather confrontational people.

people.
Seismic activity has increased along with global warming.
Logic, physics, and probability all say that when you shift the mass of the earth (ice caps melting), seismic activity will increase. And it has, by a lot...in the last 30 years.
The poles are shifting.
This is the earth adjusting.
This is akin to shifting the mass of a spinning toy top.
It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality. and it is going to get worse.

What you are saying might be true , but u have presented it in the most retarded way.
Also Evan though global warming is happening and ice caps are melting that does not necessarily mean there is causal link with seismic activity of curse there might be but its the kind of claim where u need to back it up with some evidence and sources.
"It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality" ~ I think I get what you are trying to say with this but your communicating it all wrong, A christain could say exactly the same thing but focused on how god is real. Making a statment like that is uselss its the evidence and scientific method behind what is sead that will sway any sain person to believe in something or believing in something that is inline with reality.
Lol i Myself have not very clearly exsplaind why what u have said is retarded but im sure if you think about it you will see why what u said was not exactly cunstructive evan though im pritty sure u r on the right page with things.

Science, especially theoretical science is based on probability. Probability is a a process comprised mainly of inductive reasoning. k? this is looking at trends and connecting the dots. Physics...and simple probability. There are no definitives, no absolutes. It is virtually impossible to create a hard science in this realm...we simply don't have the tools.
Einstein's theories were still "theories", and have been proven throughout time (mainly in the mathematical realm). But they were theories based on probability. Asking "what if" and looking at liklihoods.
Our beliefs, or our hopes for absolutes do nothing to affect probability. And scientific "proof" is often for sale.
thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

Although yes on a quantum level things are bassed on probability and ultimetly u can keep asking why unttill nothing makes anny sense , Its a fact that on our scale of interaction with the world things can be prodicted and understood to a level that alows for us to utilise scence and prodict and understand things to a high level.
I dont evan understand the overall point you are making you are contradicting yourself and going all over the place .
Instead of spewing all this talk out next time you want to make an objective claim why dont you just stick to stating the claim and then backing it up with evidence ?
You saying "It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality. and it is going to get worse." does nothing to help anyone you simply cannot make a claim and then say LOGIC AND REASON GO TO SHOW I AM RIGHT.
lol what u put is like me saying , "LOgic and resoin go to show that the sun is smaller than a bannana you can belive in an invisable sky god-man . this is about phiusics and reality and its only gona get more bananery."

MY issue was not with the ice caps melting thing , as i said that could be true ore false , i was just pointing out all the other stuff you typed in aditoin to that which was superfalouse and made little sense and if anything undermined the intail point u were getting at ,

you posted link to sauces after which is fine , i think if you had just done that on your first post , made objective statement x and posted suces to back it up , then people imideatly would have been able to just debate the sources and progress there knowlage.

Thing is you actually come across as a non native English speaker ( evan more so than me lol although im sure my spelling is worse)

Star Trek talks on foreign affair policy AKA prime directive

kasinator says...

Let me be the mediator between you two. The prime directive was indeed from the vulcans. But dismissing the outcry of a race can be simply heartless. Letting the person die in the fire just because you dont know them is just a grotesque out of sight and mind excuse. handing out to those in need the means help is always a good thing. but you have to remember it still has consequences. the replicator idea for instance. Who is to say that they will just replicate food? they can replicate weapons just as easily in theory. and it can certainly cause a culture clash if they are like the native american type species.

The problem is not about if the prime directive is unfair, SFdebris pointed out it turned unquestionable, dogmatic. there is no negotiation anylonger when it really needs ore of a middle ground between helpiging and ignoring.

Minecraft Is Just Awesome

Someone explain to me what it is about this game that makes it so awesome! Seriously, I want to be part of teh aweshum, toos!

Think of it as a whole world made out of Lego bricks, you can remove or add to every block in the landscape.
Then add the fact that some blocks are defined as wood, some as stone, some as ore, and you can use these to make tools and weapons.
You need these tools and weapons because the game has a day/night cycle and zombies and skeletons come out at night.

The world is procedurally generated, almost infinite in size, and full of underground caverns full of ore and more monsters.

The graphics aren't anything special and there's no storyline or missions, but the possibilities for emergent gameplay are almost limitless.

Plastic Bag: A Short Film Narrated by Werner Herzog

JesseoftheNorth says...

*quality

Great concept and very skillfully executed. Werner Herzog is the perfect narrator for this too. I've thought about making a film with a similar concept before - following ore from a mine as it gets processed, made into various things and ultimately is discarded and forgotten.
