World's Biggest Asshole

Babymech says...

This is why opt-out systems are the only thing that makes sense - we'll never get anywhere if we expect people to be heroes in order to act halfway decently.

Bill Maher: Who Needs Guns?

newtboy says...

I love that idea.
Every citizen gets tested for psychological problems, and those that pass are trained and issued firearms, for which they agree to serve if needed, like the national guard. I would also support an opt-out of that, but those people shouldn't get guns.
With good screening, and good training, we could still not be as "safe" as the Swiss, but we could be incredibly safer and more sane than we are today with no screening and no training.

But, that plan probably wouldn't eat up 1% of the US defense budget. That budget is outrageously enormous and growing (contrary to what the right wing erroneously claims).

The big problem with that is, what to do about the millions of firearms already owned by the unscreened? Perhaps another program to require gun owners to get screened or turn over/sell their firearms? That wouldn't cover the millions of unregistered guns, but would be a start.

One problem with your anecdote. Swiss citizens (men compulsory, women voluntarily) are required, by law, to become part of their citizen military, a militia if you will, and receive intense training and practice with weapons. The process also weeds out the whack jobs, who don't get to buy guns.

The Swiss procedure should be adopted by the US. It'd be a great way to use up the defense budget without invading anywhere...

Britain Leaving the EU - For and Against, Good or Bad?

gorillaman says...

I've largely opted out of this one. I'm not an economist or an expert in european law, so I haven't the knowledge to make an intelligent choice.

I am somewhat naturally inclined toward remaining: there was never a trace of patriotism in my soul, and the european courts at least have done some service toward protecting british freedoms, both from our government and from those corporations who'd like to own it. The common market's a good principle, and I don't have anything but admiration for the idea of a european superpower to oppose the twin fascisms of the US and China.

I never thought I'd grow up to care about immigration, but it turns out I don't like seeing millions of social conservatives marching into western europe from lesser cultures, pushing back against the progress we've made in recent decades.

There's another dimension to that question in the UK, which I don't think is well understood externally: where absolutely anyone with a european passport is allowed permanent residence here, the government keeps the figures down to appease its more xenophobic voters by making it practically impossible for those outside the EU. So, every year we tell thousands of highly skilled, highly intelligent prospective immigrants to just fuck off. Good policy.

In any event, I don't endorse unjust systems like democracy, and wouldn't vote in any referendum.

Obama Can't Seem To Figure Out What To Do After Presidency

I see what you mean with the new layout. The colors completely detach the description from the video. I'd recommend changing back to the old VideoSift layout* You won't regret it and you can always switch back if you choose to.

*at the very bottom of the page click on 'beta opt out'

Thanks. It's weird, I really didn't see the description...

Looking again, I notice that in the latest layout the title and the 'submitted by' info is located right under the video in the white background area, but the description is lower down in the gray portion on top of the comments. If you didn't have a chance to get your second coffee, you might miss it!

How to edit a video description in latest version of VS? (Sift Talk Post)

eric3579 says...

Weird? Poor design is more like it. You don't know how many times ive had to help people find the edit function...a shit ton. It should be under the video. More obvious and accessible.

Yes, just opt out at the bottom of the page. You can go back and forth if you desire.

I find this edit video usability weird in the new design. I had problems too.

Wow, we still have the old design?

On the top header scroll over your name and a drop down menu will appear that contains 'edit your video'.

You can also just decide to use the old sift by going to the bottom of the page and clicking 'beta opt out'. Voila, no more mucking around with the new clunky design

The Force Awakens - spoiler free review (Spacy Talk Post)

' Saw it late Thursday night with a small group in a small theater opting out of IMAX 3D. ' Had to ask the staff if they had forgotten Theater 8. It was already five minutes after start time with no previews nor film on screen.

One individual had to inform the rest of us that this was already his second viewing of the film. He told us how much he liked it . . . .

In 1977 I saw the first film with my dad and my brother on a huge screen. I remember the crowd cheering when the two ships first came on screen.

Just to let you know you can go to the bottom of any page in the new design and 'OPT OUT'.

This clumsy new interface on Videosift made me realize it takes more mouse clicks just to read the same old crap. It's been fun.

I miss the old format.

I REALLY miss seeing the length before clicking thru. I can live with the channels, but the length is really important to me.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: LGBT Discrimination

Lawdeedaw says...

Not torn at all here. They utilize the resources of a stable society then they have to provide their services to all their members without basis of discrimination. The other way of looking at it is this. Do gays and lesbians have the option to avoid paying taxes on this business owner's benefits? Ie., he probably went to public school, his water bills are artificially low, the roads that are serviced so people can get to his place, the police provided to protect and prevent crime in his area, etc.

If gays and lesbians can opt out of paying taxes for anyone who could potentially deny them services (ie, as of right now everyone) then they wouldn't have a problem.

MilkmanDan said:

I have to admit that I'm partially on the "wrong" side of this one.

Housing, not being fired for being gay, that kind of stuff, I'm with John Oliver 100%.

But restaurants, bakers, etc. ... I dunno, I'm a little torn.

Places like Big Earl's in the clip put up a sign that says "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason". I tend to think that is a right that we should allow private businesses (NOT things that are set up for the public good like utilities, gas stations, govt. agencies, whatever) to have.

That is NOT to say that I approve of the way that these clowns exercise that right. Dude doesn't want to make cakes for same-sex weddings ... fine. You're a retard, passing up potential customers for a really stupid reason, and also possibly discouraging business from other people that empathize with those that you are denying service to, but ... hey, it is your goddamn business. If you don't want to make a cake for people who's name starts with a Q, I'd support your right to make that (equally dumbass) decision.

Kinda the same thing goes for Big Earl's. That might even be one of the cases where the comfort of your standard clientele (redneck bigots) is potentially more important/beneficial to your bottom line than the potential lost business that your discriminating policy causes. In other words, from a purely capitalistic viewpoint, the policy might be a net positive to the business. Maybe.

The one thing that gives me pause on those more private businesses being allowed to "deny service to anyone for any reason" is shifting from LGBT equality to race equality. If that cake maker refused to make cakes for a black wedding, I'd be more accepting that we need some government intervention. I know that my opinion should be the same in both instances, but I can only honestly admit that at the gut level, I have a different reaction to those 2 scenarios.

I sorta think that even the racist cake-maker should be allowed to continue to be racist (so long as we're talking cakes, and not something more *necessary* to public good), because a racist cake maker will probably put themselves out of business without the need for any government intervention. BUT, I'm sure there are places in the US where that wouldn't have been true (and where it wouldn't be true today), and we needed the push of federal mandate to force such people to remove heads from asses. Maybe the same thing is true for LGBT discrimination.

But I do still feel conflicted about it. Even though I know I shouldn't.

Why doesn't the Facebook login keep you logged in? (Sift Talk Post)

eric3579 says...

If you are seeing single videos in the new design you can go to the very bottom of the page and click opt out. Although i think you have to be logged in to do so.

Is there any way to opt out of the strange current single video view or maybe opt-in to something else? Is it part of that beta?

Why doesn't the Facebook login keep you logged in? (Sift Talk Post)

lurgee says...

"I must say, as well, I don't like the beta layout of the site - since I get to see that every time I go on here, since the opt-out is only when I'm logged in. I think that if you force the issue on that design, it will be the final deathblow to the site, since it essentially hides the community."

I totally agree @gwiz665
