Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins: Morality and Science

BicycleRepairMan says...

>> ^L0cky:

He did really skirt around the happy pill issue though.(...) He answered the question with another question: 'When would you take that pill?'; which ultimately breaks down his entire argument. (....) If I was Harris, I would explicitly state that his proposition is exclusively in regards to making real world decisions; and not about engineering happiness at an individual level.

I don't think he skirted around the issue or broke down his argument. Part of his point, which is also embedded in the title in the book, is that a one-shot ultimate happiness pill isnt possible, or even desirable, which is why he describes a moral landscape, as opposed to a moral scale. I think the comparison with health really nails it: you can be fat an eat unhealthy, for instance, and still be "healthy" in the sense that you dont have terminal cancer or a severe depression etc. The definition of health, in other words, is not really a scale, but a landscape, where you can literally be Lance Armstrong with x number of tour de france medals and going strong and still be what doctors would call "terminally ill"

What is sure, in medicine , however, is that if you do have cancer, for instance, the best way to treat your body would probably not be 5 burgers and 40 cigarettes a day.

The same could be said, as Harris puts it, the best advice to a country with high infant and mother mortality, is not to burn down schools designed to teach small girls to read.

This is clearly not "just" a real world descision anymore than our basic concepts of health at an individual level

Freddie Wong - One Shot ft. Eliza Dushku

ForgedReality says...

>> ^rychan:

I generally dislike all of Freddie's movies, and this is no exception. There doesn't seem to be much more here than glorification of violence. Which I don't mind, it just doesn't do much for my by itself. Violence for a purpose would be nice, at least.
Also it just seems like the "protagonists" are just lucky, and the bad guys extremely deaf, have bad aim, and like to run out of cover.

All good points.

Then again, sometimes pure entertainment is just pure entertainment. Do you also over-analyze movies like Fast Five because driving a vault through the middle of downtown attached to a couple of cables is just OH SO REALISTIC and that hitting the nitrous ALWAYS equates to MORE traction from a standstill? Sometimes you just have to relax and have fun. Smile more. Life will be better. I promise.

One day, Freddie will make a vid that cost him more than $500 to shoot, and it will suck ass.
I believe in Universal Irony.

When I watch these, I do wonder where all this is leading so far as his career is concerned. Seems like it must be going somewhere, but I can't really imagine where.

Apparently the dividing line between poor and not poor was whether you had a garden or not, a place to corral animals.

If you had a garden, then you had a source of food. If you had a pig, and a cow, and chickens, you were doing just fine.

My dad lived in a two room shack, with the porch screened in for additional sleeping quarters. In these three rooms lived his widowed mother, her newly married brother and young wife, and five kids, the oldest of whom was 8 when his father died. Uncle Buck would wake up in the winter and have to shake the snow off his blanket - it had drifted in through the porch screen, accumulating on him as he slept.

But they weren't poor. They had a garden and a rifle and a means to feed themselves.

Now my dad has a Master's degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, thanks to the GI Bill and WWII.

The world is an amazing place, isn't it?

Seeing this vid prompted this story from my dad -- He grew up on a dirt farm in Oklahoma during the depths of the Depression. One of their sources of food was my dad's ability to kill squirrels for the stew pot.
He was 15-16 years old, out hunting. Saw a squirrel in the crook of a tree, just its head popping up. He got it with one shot, picked up the body and stuffed it in the back pocket of his overalls and started walking home.
Halfway home.... his pocket started wriggling. He had just creased its head, grazing the hair right between its ears. Knocked it unconscious but otherwise it was fine.
He says he built a cage for it, where it lived for months before escaping. Took up residence in the roof, until it eventually disappeared.
I was surprised it didn't end up in the cooking pot, but as dad says, they weren't poor. The folks living in a cave in the riverbank were poor.

I'm guessing that if he could afford guns and ammo (even if it was just a .22), then you weren't that poor.

Actually they are making this for the PC for that very reason. The tech has been out not being utilized. You can read about it here.

They are doing exactly what you are saying and it's going to look awesome for it.

And seriously antimatter? No it doesn't feel like that. Get off the high horse. Like asmo said, you don't like the world condition, go do something about it.

I'm going to come in hear and spout my gremlin ideas. So, is this for a console as well? It looks good but just imagine if the industry wasn't supporting shitty consoles how much better PC games would be looking right now? Even though PC games are going through a low-fi, indie, artsy phase right now, which I think is totally rad; we could have blazing tech going as well, far and above consoles.
The other thing I had on my mind is these games "look" good but after about five minutes my mind goes numb and I nearly fall asleep. I hate the pacing of games like this, CoD, ect. Give me more games like Amnesia where you almost never see an enemy but you're also about to shit your pants every two minutes or even 50/50 stealth-action like the last Splinter Cell where you actually have a damn choice of anything, shit, I dislike this crap for being war pornography but I'd rather play a massive/realistic game like Arma I or II - hell, I'd rather go back and play the original Operation Flashpoint where you get one-shotted from an unknown enemy after you just spent two hours traversing through a dark forest trying to figure out where that damn tank was that you wanted to avoid. Immersive tension motherfuckers, learn it, use it, enjoy it.

"I have no Idea how they did this." Generally, when you want to show many elements in one shot that you actually shot separately, you shoot the exact same camera move with different actors (or the same one many times) over and over getting each of the people you want.

Then you combine the shots together only adding in the bits that are different between the shots.
