Chomsky on Egypt

Infamy, infamy. They've all got it in for me.

Rodney Dangerfield Standup (Not the Tonight Show one)

xxovercastxx says...

On 8 April 2003, Dangerfield underwent brain surgery to improve blood flow in preparation for heart valve-replacement surgery on 24 August 2004. Upon entering the hospital, he uttered another characteristic one-liner when asked how long he would be hospitalized: "If all goes well, about a week. If not, about an hour and a half." - Wikipedia

Craig Ferguson's Banned Dr Who Cold Open

Shepppard says...

>> ^gwiz665:

I've not really seen episodes of Dr. Who. But from the clips I have seen, it seems silly. I don't get the rabid fascination people have with it.

I was actually in the same boat.

This is literally how I got into doctor who:

I had a friend over and we crashed on my couches in my family room and left the t.v. going (We were watching something on the space channel, probably one of the star treks or something else equally nerdy).

When I came to there was something just starting but I had -no- idea what it was. With the production values I actually figured it was a movie and got kinda into it, my friend woke up a bit later and did, too.

The entire time I was thinking "This is Doctor Who? I always thought it was really cheesy and odd" but to my surprise it was.

I wound up watching the rest of the season and thoroughly enjoying it (Like previously stated, its mostly about how he cleverly gets out of situations, and the witty one-liners.)

I actually went back and tried watching the David Tennant episodes, but they never really clicked with me.. Whereas Matt Smith has a sort of schoolboy charm to him, David Tennant always seemed to just be more quirky.

In any case.. only 19 more days until the new season! huzzah!

Lightning Strikes Truck

Lethin says...

i call fake, a bolt that close would have no sound delay, and the very quiet reaction from the driver only further confuses the point. i'd be nearly shitting myself or at least saying "ooooo"

however, best comments ever. so many one liners!

I neither found the video entertaining or your arguments sufficiently valid.
Downvote.

I don't find your argument to be sufficiently valid.

I don't find your FACE sufficiently valid!
ahem
sorry Torquay, I didn't mean that...what I meant to say was:
Well Door Key, thank god we have a democratic style system here whereby voting determines the success of a video rather than the ideas of an individual.
Thoughts can be freely exchanged whilst being moderated by an overall majority, that way everyone can agree or disagree with an argument (or in this case, statement T__T ) without (again, in this case) affecting the majority vote of a video.
What I'm trying to say Palm Tree, is that a voting system allows me to have an opinion - and if that opinion is attempted to be quashed by a nonsensical one-liner. I will write a long, useless and utterly pointless post in response.

What I like about the "democratic" system here is the ability to *quality this as I see fit, maybe even shoot it a promote when I get another power point. Each side has valid arguments, and I'll tend to agree with both sides (interestingly enough).

The only problem I have is with the following argument:
Please don't attempt to legitimize this by arguing that these people voluntarily engage in this kind of activity. If they do so, it's because are afflicted by a lack of empathy along with foolish pride, recklessness and sadism.

How can you not legitimize what they do because they do it voluntarily? They absolutely know the risks of stepping in that ring, and do so willingly. I just wanted to make it clear that these guys know exactly what they're getting into. Why they do it, is for their own reasons, not for YOU to decide, but for them. (I wouldn't call them sadists, I have a friend who fights MMA and is certainly not one.)

What do you think about this idea for the Sift Lounge??? ((see description)) (User Poll by JiggaJonson)

Fletch says...

It could be a fun Videosift area, but I wouldn't want it as a SiftLounge replacement. Also, Pop-up videos had lots of pop-up facts and little-knowns about artist, group, song, etc. This sounds more like it would be a stream of smarmisms and one-liners, with some Sifti-Wiki "facts" thrown in here and there. Maybe something along the lines of Siftery Science Theatre 3000 would be a more apt description of what yer talking about (???)

The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies

raverman says...

Agree with the problem, but not the cause. Films are story telling, and story telling always adopts the culture and beliefs and stereotypes of the Audience.

These tend to be mostly American/Hollywood movies. Ultimately the underlying American movie watching public still generally believe women are either housewives, raising kids without adventure in their lives or lonely overworked and unmarried.

But it's also because of just a general lack of talent!
- Weak writers rely on the old tired movie formulas. e.g. the hard cop, divorced, alcoholic but loves his kids.
- Weak actors can only act 'basic' parts: Violent men with one liners, Sassy women shopping and bitching about men.

It's really hard to find a male or female actor that has the chops to pull off a part where they carry the character and conflict of a real storyline for 2+ hours. Most of the best Female actors i can think of are in the UK.

National Prayer Day Unconstitutional

No molestation, thank you

Yeah one of my mates had the same thing to say pretty much bud did you watch the vid or just listen to it? A lot of the humor of this bit is in the acting, I think. Also I Loove comedians who riff on ideas. For example, Jimmy Carr is a well recognised comedian, loved the world over and scores highly on the sporadicly high-brow (did I get that right or is my prole showing?) http://www.videosift.com , yet I hate him and would only vote for a video if him if it contained footage of his head exploding, BECAUSE he is a one liner. He never RIFFS on a idea. Just one joke and he moves on. Every comedian that I think is good can grab hold of an idea and tear it to bits until theres nothing left to ridicule
