Video Game High School Season 2 on Kickstarter (Sift Talk Post)

Sagemind says...

I think the point of things like the Wii controller and Kinnect was to create a new controller that helps to eliminate things like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Moving back to thumbs goes directly opposite to that concept. I play games on my phone now, all thumb games, and I'm well on my way to Carpal Tunnel surgery. (...not exclusively from iPhone thumb games.) So although this small controller concept may feel right at first, I think more needs to be done in the way of ergonomics and less two thumb or finger controls.

I agree that maybe people are getting tired of novelty controllers but I think Wii kicked it off with a step in the right direction. Maybe a few more steps need to be taken?

Also I think people are a tired of all the novel controls - Kinnect, numchucks, wands, boards, guitars. Some people just want to play games with their thumbs.

OK we have been pretty loose on these- what I would describe as "novelty polls" but it hunk the novelty is gone. Especially when there are a lot of pressing matters we're dealing with that could use this real estate in Sift Talk. In the future, please keep it Sift related, and it least have it make grammatical sense. *discard

World's Best Cat Toy Keeps Kitty Busy For Hours!

AeroMechanical says...

Same here. They were fascinated by it for about a day, but that was the end of it. That is pretty much the story with every cat toy. Novelty counts for much more than anything else, but since novelty to a cat is a slightly differently shaped cardboard box, or a grocery bag somewhere where there wasn't one before, it's actually pretty easy to keep them entertained.

Stop & Frisk: Ever been frisked by the cops? Make it fun!

I would have thought carrying medication for some of the less attractive diseases or ailments would make their day. Second thought, being caught carrying a selection of pills would probably land you in a whole other world of trouble, best stick to creams or other things with big labels...

How about a variety of sex toys, novelty contraceptives and different flavours of lube?

Drunk Driver Car Crash and Aftermath

Ambulance watchers are a step below ambulance chasers....

Voyeuristic preoccupation with human misery is healthy for mind, body , and soul.

Question: Is the previous statement true, false, or meaningless?

Personally, I believe seeking this form of tragic spectacle for entertainment purposes and the increasing popularity among the masses of the same, points to a decline in the fabric of our society in general as well as the decline of the quality of information and novelty available on this website. Conversely, preoccupation with video clips evoking warm, fuzzy feelings (MEEOOOOW??!!!) represents a basic hind-brained function of a human being in times of duress or uncertainty to want to curl up next to a warm nipple and re-enter the fucking matrix!

Sorry I was mistaken - the ice-Coke machine was in Ximending (teens fashion area), but the museum was close to Taipei Train Station.

Here is a google map of where the ice-Coke machine was (not sure if it's still there).

That "old Taipei" museum was here. Unfortunately they are now closed.

Even though it's been three years since I was there (my GOD has it been that long?), I would be thrilled to see where this museum is located. My fiance and I spent one the best years of our lives living in JingMei. I took the LSAT at ShiDa Science. I miss TaiBei more than most grandmothers miss their grandkids.

In Taipei, there is a small underground museum that has old-style Taiwan (old buildings, pictures, cars, from the 1950s and before). There was even a 1950's style diner where they used the old manual machines to make shave-ice. The ice-coke machine was above ground nearby there. I have no idea if it's still there or not.

I can try to create a Google Map pushpin if you are interested.

Where in Taiwan?
In reply to this comment by spawnflagger:
I had this in Taiwan a few years ago (was only available at 1 machine, I guess was a test/demo unit). It doesn't taste exactly the same - somewhere between coke and coke zero. The ice doesn't last too long when it's >35C outside; the "fizz" (carbonation) seems to run out faster than regular bottled coke; and it costs more.

So yeah, a neat novelty item, but won't replace regular Pop/Soda vending machines.

The Great Porn Experiment: TEDxGlasgow, Gary Wilson

gwiz665 says...

Watching it again with notes.
Single * are what he says, double ** are what I respond.
*Dopamine is released for novelty - aka new girls/guys.
*No control group, since everyone watches porn.
*Doctors thinks people who like porn, have ADD and related things.
*Internet porn is as different from sex, as video games from checkers.
*Porn is addictive, because of our built-in reward system (dopamine, binge mechanism).
*Excessive addiction, leads to brain changes (other pleasures numbed, hyper reactive to porn, willpower erosion) like all other addictions.
*"Reddit effect" constant novelty is addicting.
*He talks about a voluntary control group of people who voluntarily give up internet porn. I have issues with this.
** In people who voluntarily give up internet porn, there will often be other factors leading to this; say a wife that hates it and influence the man to also hate it. Or some bad experience might turn a person off it. My point is, that he assumes that there's only one variable changes from the rest of the people, and that's not really true, since many other factors play into it, since something caused the willing rejection of internet porn. It's not a true control group.
** Overuse of porn desensitizes the brain, stopping the use returns the sensitivity. This makes sense. This is like any other addiction, this does not say anything about whether or not porn is bad, it says overuse/addiction to porn is bad. I agree with that.

He wants us to not be addicted to porn. This does not speak against anything I've said in this thread.

How to Pronounce Uranus - C.G.P GREY

MilkmanDan says...

I say, embrace it. Kids will still snicker the first few times they hear the name, but who cares?

That's right kids -- it is planet YER' ANUS. Enjoy your moments of juvenile mirth every time you hear it. YERANUS YERANUS YERANUS.

Perhaps we can mitigate this problem by dumping the kids into a sort of unfortunate name "sensory overload"?:

We are planning to ERECT a PENAL colony on URANUS. The first prisoners can be birds like blue footed BOOBIES and great TITS. Maybe we'll leave some PUSSY cats there to keep the bird population from exploding.

I propose that every 3rd grade science teacher recite the preceding paragraph (adding any more unfortunate words they deem worthy) to their classes every day until the novelty wears off and the kids stop giggling.
