Only Canadian Hockey Fights End This Way

AeroMechanical says...

Absolutely. I don't mean this in the WWF sense of "fake," but certainly in the sense that the players are obligated to fight as part of the show, know this, and don't really want to hurt one another. They're cooperatively putting on a show to get the spectators riled up. It's not stage fighting, but it's not real fighting either.

The main point regarding this video is that two men of that size and athleticism in the same situation, were they not holding back almost entirely, would kill each other in short order. Even so, I'd agree that they're hitting hard enough so that they're risking unnecessary brain damage over the longer term, which is why I think it's cruel. As they say about boxers: it's not the big hits that do them in, it's the accumulation of all the little hits.

Of course, there is a part of me that likes the fights too, but I personally would prefer ice hockey without them.

Do you seriously think hockey fights are fake? Some of them are staged, which to me is stupid, but even those are real fights. I like some fights, but due to concussions, it won't be long before it's mostly out of the game.

David Mitchell on Atheism

newtboy says...

Atheism is not the reverse of theism....it is the lack of theism. It's not a belief in no god, it's a lack of belief in a god. I understand that's a difficult concept for some.
Agnosticism is lack of certainty (or admission that certitude is impossible) in what you believe, Gnosticism is absolute certitude in your (unknowable)belief.
Personal 'revelation' by god is not real evidence and is far from proof, even for the one receiving the 'personal revelation'.
Why does the 'all powerful, benevolent god' hate amputees? Not once in history has anyone ever had an arm re-grow thanks to their belief in/worship of god (or any other reason). I've never heard a serious answer to that question.

I wasn't raised in a religious home so I never had that aspect in my life of seeking comfort from the idea of God. I believed that we were products of random chance, although the real love and connection I felt to people and this reality did not feel that way. Essentially, though, I had resigned myself to the fact of my future death, and that eventually no one would ever remember or care that I even existed.

I was an agnostic towards the idea of God at that point. Atheism to me was the other extreme from theism, and I believed that the rational standpoint was agnosticism. If you did not have equal skepticism towards either side, I felt you were being intellectually dishonest. You could sum it up in a simple statement, that everything, including the fact that anything exists at all, is equally unlikely. To try to get that fact to point towards or away from a God in my opinion just showed bias.

I changed my mind when I began to have supernatural experiences. This didn't make me a theist, but it did open my eyes to the idea that there was a spiritual reality. It was in pursuing that spirituality that I received revelation that an all powerful, benevolent God does exist. After this, I became a Christian and was born again, and transformed into a new person.

So, what I would say is, there is no evidence of God beyond personal revelation by God. This is by design because God requires us to seek Him by faith. He is seeking those who will worship Him in Spirit and in truth. If you want to know whether there is a God or not, you must seek Him with all of your heart. Seek Him while it is still called today, because today is the day of salvation.

Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

True Detective: Rust's existential musings about religion

Trancecoach says...

"Irrevocable commitment to any religion is not only intellectual suicide; it is positive unfaith because it closes the mind to any new vision of the world. Faith is, above all, open-ness — an act of trust in the unknown.
[…]
"No considerate God would destroy the human mind by making it so rigid and unadaptable as to depend upon one book, the Bible, for all the answers. For the use of words, and thus of a book, is to point beyond themselves to a world of life and experience that is not mere words or even ideas. Just as money is not real, consumable wealth, books are not life. To idolize scriptures is like eating paper currency."

Olesya the Bendy

chingalera says...

Yeah, she's not real. What she's doing has no bearing on anything tangible. Even her name is some fake, made-up confabulatory ruse. Why does anyone even bother with twisting their body into different positions that all look the same? Practice never does anything for the body, mind, or soul. Meh, meh, meh, phooey and stack sushi on that place in the small of her back.

I did watch it for an uncomfortable period. I wondered if she was going to vary it up a bit but she really didn't. I didn't google her though and apparently she don't exist, sooo phooey.

Remote control Spy Turtle watches dolphin pods

Longswd says...

They can immediately tell it's not real through use of their sonar, which gives them an ultrasound-like picture of the insides of it.

I imagine that's why they find it so fascinating. Had they thought it the real deal, they wouldn't be paying any special attention to it. If the goal of the program was to document natural behavior, it's died aborning.

BlizzCon 2013 Epic Cosplay Showcase

mxxcon says...

These are not real fans.
These are commissioned "cosplayers". All big publishers pay them $ to make costumes and come to conventions. I think videosift has a short documentary somewhere about 2 of the girls in this video.

crikey, haven't seen so many good costumes all in one video before, really nice work on those.

Jar-Jar Binks Finally Dies - Deleted Star Wars Scene

MilkmanDan says...

Thanks --

Which guess was I close with?
A) Over the falls but didn't die, or
B) Jumped clear before the vehicle goes over?

I'll assume A since B would make this edited from the original deleted scene, and therefore not "real"?

Again, thanks for the info -- especially since it required you to make the shameful admission of owning the DVD!
(just kidding, I bought it also for the sake of completeness but my copy is on the opposite side of the planet since I didn't bring DVDs with me to Thailand -- don't recall ever watching the special features / deleted scenes)

ChaosEngine said:

@MilkmanDan, as one of the only people on the planet to own the Ep.1 DVD (hey I was hoping it might get better somehow), I can confirm that you're pretty much spot on. It is a real deleted scene, but unfortunately jar jar wasn't brutally murdered in it

It's not real. I remember when MythBusters did their high heels driving tests. LOL!

Ladies, while I love the heels in some situations, the moment I see someone driving a car or out in the desert with shoes like that, I just think you are dumb.

You are aware this was an advert for a t.v. show, and not real, right? Because even through a sarcasm filter, it makes it sound like you're taking this video seriously.
