The Assasination of Capt. America

Raigen says...

>> ^MarineGunrock:
I love people in Canada telling the reporters what the American dream and such is.

I did fail to see where that happened at all in the clip from Global National. I noticed one of the comic book employees discussing what Cap's beliefs about America was, and how they might not coincide with what America has become. I wasn't aware that was "The Dream", as it were.

Interesting bit of Comic Book Trivia for everyone as well: There is only one character that has died in the history of comic books, and has remained that way since it occured; Gwen Stacy.

And don't jump out at me and say she showed up in an issue of Spider-Man either! That was Gwen's supposed daughter created by Norman Osborne.

Howard Zinn on Human Nature and Aggression

snoozedoctor says...

He's an idealist, no doubt. I guess we didn't read the same history and anthropology books though. The noble savage was noble to his own tribe and savage to others. The history of civilization is a continuum of war, occasionally punctuated by peace. The campaigns; Romans, Gauls, Vikings, Normans, Spanish Conquistadors, the revolutions; American, French, Bolshevik, and Maoist, the civil wars; American and Spanish, they all point to the aggressive nature of man.

Without government and it's most noble function, rule of law, all would be anarchy and aggression.

Governments of States share the characteristics of the individual; pride, prejudice, suspicion, envy, nationalism, and aggression. The individual is restrained by threat of penalty of law. The State has only the restraint of defeat at the hands of their enemy. This is where Mr. Zinn hits the nail on the head. The Government of the State is a dangerous thing because it lacks that restraint. It's able to wage unpopular geo-political war and push citizens, under threat of penalty, into forced and unwilling aggression.

The Future of North American Integration in the Wake of the Terrorist Attacks

http://www.cfr.org/publication/4280/future_of_north_american_integration_in_the_wake_of_the_terrorist_attacks.html

The Atlanta Roundtable held its second session on October 17, 2001 to discuss the future of North American integration in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Gordon D. Giffin, Vice Chairman of Long, Aldridge & Norman and former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, and Robert A. Pastor, Professor of Political Science at Emory University, led the discussion.

The Atlanta Roundtable addressed the following questions:

What were the prospects of North American integration prior to September 11? What are they now?

What has been U.S. policy toward Canada and Mexico vis á vis trade? How has it changed since September 11? How should it change?

How will security concerns on the Canadian and Mexican borders affect trade policy going forward?

How has the United States’ response to the terrorist attacks (i.e. enforcing a security perimeter with Canada) affected our broader relations?

What are the costs and trade-offs of future U.S. actions to deal with the terrorist threat on our borders?

What can or should Canada and Mexico be doing to support the “war” on terrorism?

Eat This!

arvana says...

I agree with you, Smibbo, about the food choices. There's no question that Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution have helped to feed the world. It's just that their methods have turned out to do a lot of harm in the long run, resulting in greatly diminished soil fertility and ever-increasing dependence on crop protection chemicals. So there need to be some sustainable alternatives. Organic farming still has a ways to go before it can feed the world, but to me it promises far more long-term potential than conventional agriculture.

As far as science being good for breeding plants, I'm not disagreeing in general. But I do believe that agricultural science has taken a wrong turn, and that the vast majority of research is following some bankrupt principles. My main objection is the utter lack of taking into account polygene relationships and complex biological systems -- they just keep breeding in "a gene" for this and that (whether by genetic engineering or conventional breeding) when the reality is that almost all characteristics are determined by polygenes.

And let's just imagine that they were really successful in producing a plant that was incredibly and permanently resistant to all pests and diseases. What would happen then? It would become an invasive species and crowd out everything else. To some degree this has already happened -- some of the genetics of Roundup Ready canola have crossed into wild rapeseed. And as to the effects on the human body of eating GE foods, that has had very little testing at all. Everybody thought Thalidomide was great, until all the birth defects.

So I'm not against science -- not at all -- I have just seen that scientists tend to get excited by the work they're doing, and forget or ignore the big picture and long term effects of their work.

And greed is also a great motivator in setting aside principles.

Eat This!

smibbo says...

As usual, Penn and Teller take a good argument and go strawman-crazy on it. There's no conflict between organic growing and GE in fact the two can easily work in tandem and already have for a long time now. Does anyone really believe that the produce the see in the grocery stores now is genetically the same as produce that was growing wild a hundred years ago? Farmers have been "genetically engineering" food for centuries, no thousands of years with cross-breeding in order to yield better and more resistant crops.
I do think the world should know more about Norman Borlaug and appreciate all he's done in the name of feeding the hungry. But to act as if organic farming is somehow at odds with genetic engineering is totally stupid. Of course we should be concerned about modified food, and at the same time there are safer ways to farm than loading our crops with chemicals. I don't understand how they can put GE and pesticides in the same program as if the latter's okay just because the former might be!
But as to "frankenfood" that is just silly. Does anyone really think agribusiness can afford the lawsuits and mass degradation that would ensue were they to put out untested foodstuffs? Come on people! Genetically engineering food IS tested and rigorously so - these people ARE scientists and believe it or not, they DO know a lot about what they're doing.
If science claimed to have a cure for AIDs or Parkinson's based on genetic engineering people would be screaming for it to be released and used even if it weren't fully tested - oh wait, people already do that.
But if it's farming, everyone wants to believe the agribusiness is out to kill everyone with untested food? That's Bullshit! I'll believe in agribusiness long before I believe in pharma-corp.

U.S. Seeks to Prosecute Pulitzer Prize AP Photographer

And Norman Mailer nearly killed his wife with a knife. He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and an attempted murderer. BUT it must have been a frame-up because OBVIOUSLY, if you win a prize, you can't be a criminal.

Talib Kweli - Get By

rembar says...

The lyrics, if you can't keep up Talib's flow:

[Talib]
Yeah...my Lord...yeah.

[Verse 1: Talib]
We sell crack to our own out the back of our homes
We smell the musk at the dusk in the crack of the dawn
We go through "Episodes II," like "Attack of the Clones"
Work 'til we break our back and you hear the crack of the bone
To get by, just to get by
Just to get by, just to get by
We commute to computers
Spirits stay mute while you eagles spread rumors
We survivalists, turned to consumers
To get by, just to get by
Just to get by, just to get by
Ask Him why some people got to live in a trailer, cuss like a sailor
I paint a picture with the pen like Norman Mailer
Mi abuela raised three daughters all by herself, with no help
I think about a struggle and I find the strength in myself
These words, melt in my mouth
They hot, like the jail cell in the South
Before my nigga Core bailed me out
To get by, just to get by
Just to get by, just to get by
We do or die like Bed-Stuy through the red sky
With the window of the red eye
Let the lead fly, some G. Rap shit, "Livin' to Let Die"

[Chorus: Background singers]
This morning, I woke up
Feeling brand new and I jumped up
Feeling my highs, and my lows
In my soul, and my goals
Just to stop smokin', and stop drinkin'
And I've been thinkin' - I've got my reasons
Just to get (by), just to get (by)
Just to get (by), just to get (by)

[Talib and background singers]
(ba ba ba, ba da bada, ba da bada, ba da bada, ba da badahh
Just to get (by), just to get (by)
Just to get (by by by by by by)
(ba ba ba, ba da bada, ba da bada, ba da bada, ba da badahh
Just to get (by), just to get (by)
Just to get (by by by by by by)

[Verse 2: Talib]
We keeping it gangster say "fo shizzle", "fo sheezy" and "stayin crunk"
It's easy to pull a breezy, smoke trees, and we stay drunk
Yo, our activism attackin' the system, the blacks and latins in prison
Numbers of prison they victim black in the vision
Shit and all they got is rappin' to listen to
I let them know we missin' you, the love is unconditional
Even when the condition is critical, when the livin' is miserable
Your position is pivotal, I ain't bullshittin' you
Now, why would I lie? Just to get by?
Just to get by, we get fly
The TV got us reachin' for stars
Not the ones between Venus and Mars, the ones that be readin' for parts
Some people get breast enhancements and penis enlargers
Saturday sinners, Sunday morning at the feet of the Father
They need somethin' to rely on, we get high on all types of drug
When, all you really need is love
To get by, just to get by
Just to get by, just to get by
Our parents sing like John Lennon, "Imagine all the people watch"
We rock like Paul McCartney from now until the last Beatle drop

[Chorus: Background singers]
This morning, I woke up
Feeling brand new and I jumped up
Feeling my highs, and my lows
In my soul, and my goals
Just to stop smoking, and stop drinking
And I've been thinking - I've got my reasons
Just to get (by), just to get (by)
Just to get (by), just to get (by)

[Talib: repeat 2x - with background singers]
Yoyoyo, yo
Some people cry, and some people try
Just to get by, for a piece of the pie
You love to eat and get high
We deceive when we lie, and we keepin' it fly

Yoyoyo, yo
When, the people decide, to keep a disguise
Can't see they eyes, see the evil inside
But there's people you find
Strong or feeble in mind, I stay readin' the signs

Rudy Giuliani's Four Horsemen

qruel says...

One of the country’s most prominent neoconservative pundits has been accused of using a fabricated quote from Iran’s supreme religious leader in pushing his argument that a US invasion is the only recourse to deter that country’s nuclear ambitions.

Norman Podhoretz is among the most vocal in urging President Bush to bomb Iran, and he has predicted the president will launch an attack before his term is up. Podhoretz’s argument is based on his belief that a nuclear-armed Iran would not be deterred from launching its missiles because its leaders do not fear their country’s destruction.

The Economist has called into question an oft-cited statement Podhoretz attributes to Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini, saying it is likely “bogus.”

Worst Line Reading Ever - It's Really Bad and Funny as Hell

Sarzy says...

There's actually a little blurb about this line in the trivia section for the movie at the imdb:

"Norman Mailer, in the director's commentary on the DVD, said that he was counseled to cut the ending of the scene in which 'Ryan O'Neal' 's character Tim Madden reads a note from his ex-girlfriend Madeline informing him that his wife was having an affair with her husband in which he exclaims "Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man!" due to O'Neal's poor performance. Mailer kept it in because he thought the poor line-reading actually added something to the picture. O'Neal, who had been friendly with Mailer, turned on him as the bit revealed his short-comings as an actor and embarrassed him."

Theme - Star Trek - The Original Series

arvana says...

Star Trek was the first time most of us heard a theremin -- though we didn't know it!

[edit] Turns out I was wrong -- it was an Ondes Martenot the first season, and a soprano named Loulie Jean Norman in the 2nd & 3rd seasons.

[re-edit] Hmm, the Martenot thing may only be a rumor.... very mysterious!

Pink Floyd's First Music Video - Arnold Layne

silvercord says...

From Wiki:

The song's title character is a transvestite whose primary pastime is stealing women's clothes and undergarments from washing lines. Some believe that "Arnold Layne" was actually based on a real person, and that he routinely stole underwear from the mothers of Barrett and bassist Roger Waters during their childhood days in Cambridge.

However, despite finding a place in the Top 20, the song's unusual transvestism theme attracted the ire of Radio London, which deemed the song too far-removed from "normal" society for its listeners before eventually banning it from radio airplay altogether.

Producer Norman Smith wanted the band to re-record the Joe Boyd-produced song after they had signed up with EMI. While Waters and keyboardist Richard Wright were willing to do this, Barrett, on the other hand, was entirely satisfied with the existing studio cut, and argued against recording another version.

A black and white promotional film of "Arnold Layne" was made the same year, and featured members of Pink Floyd dressing up a mannequin before showing it around a beach. Recently, an alternative promotional film was unearthed, which featured the young Floyd goofing around in a forest and in front of a church. It is also the only known footage of Syd Barrett lip synching to the song.
