I 'witnessed' this mess on Nightline [I think] ... both sickening and shameful.

upvote ... but putting this in *terrible to ease my indigestion!

Maher: Atheism is NOT a religion

ChaosEngine says...

>> ^Pantalones:

religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Interesting. Since the second part is an example, Atheism would seem to fit into this definition.

Which is the "second part"? Not that it really matters, atheism doesn't fit into any part of that definition.

Btw Bill, hate to break it to you, but that wasn't the first unbaptism

No, I think in this case it may be just poorly said and without proper set-up.
I don't mind a long topic, just organize it better before you go on air.
The topics of conversation jump around quite a bit here.

It's like a well laid out essay vs. a poorly constructed layout.
I've been around professional voice presenters all my life from both Radio and News. The woman here sounds like she keeps trying to keep things on topic but the MAx keeps derailing the conversation, mostly due to his style - listen to this without watching it, he just sounds uncouth and possibly drunk (maybe not - but he sounds like he is).

That's just my opinion. I know many people like Max Keiser mainly because he makes some good points and cut through some of the Bullsh!t and knows what he is saying, but he is also hard to follow because he jumps around so much. This is fine for you and me but as a man in the profession of speaking, I think he can arrange his tops a bit better. If he can't, at least give him an assistant that can arrange his notes for him before going on air. ...Or is that what his co-host is trying to do??

Also, The topic here is "Woman Offers Favors for Chicken McNuggets" - I had to listen through 11 minutes and 45 seconds before getting to that story. I stand by my point
Edit: and that was just an into sentence to something else altogether - Me thinks the title was a ploy!

That's what's called "concision" and it's the reason why Noam Chomsky was never on Nightline.

He made a statement on his website yesterday...

I've looked, unsuccessfully, online to see how his sales are going--nothing.
Since it's his own deal we may never find out. But, if you hear anything please let me know.

I'm really curious how the online sales of his show are doing.
I bet this is the new model of comedy shows.

Louis C.K. Interview on "Nightline" 12-12-11

Appreciate the response, BL - have you got any reference to the 50c per $80 ticket? Because I find it hard to believe.
It's an awesome experiment, and I hope he makes a killing. It looks like a huge success, and I'm fascinated by the discussion about piracy that it's spawned.

Me too! There's no way they would actually pay him this much.

Um, no. I don't have a reference to the "probably 50 cents."

Man, people are gonna hate me for not jumping on the Louis train, but I paid $80 to see him here in Melbourne (which on the current exchange rate is like $481,973 in US dollars). He was great, and it was money well spent, but if he hasn't achieved any financial security from his act yet, I'm not sure it's the industry's fault.

He turned down a shit load of money to make his own show. He has said that the only way he could keep creative control was to turn down the big bucks. He took a much, much lower offer so that he could write, direct, produce, cast, act in, and edit his own show.

If you paid $80 dollars to see him he probably made 50 cents off of it.
That's the industry's fault.
(But, I don't hate you--well, not for this anyway)

I think Louis CK is a great guy and very likeable. And I've always enjoyed the clips of him here. But when I see him in an extended set, like the Beacon one (which I bought), I'm not as impressed. At times he was utterly killing, then the energy levels just went and the material seemed to weaken. Overall he doesn't quite do it as a top tier comic for me.
However I'm going to watch the live Beacon show again and see if it changes my mind. Certainly damn good value for $5 and I hope it's a huge success.

for me, if louis CK isn't a top tier comic, i dont know what is

I hear that Dane Cook is a funny guy.

Among many other things that he said, he says that the 5$ experiment has worked "well" although it's 'far from over,' and who knows whether he'll do it again. Not exact numbers, but it hints that it's worked out pretty well for him.

Louis C.K. Interview on "Nightline" 12-12-11

Trancecoach says...

C.K. himself talks about learning to throw out his act each year from George Carlin who, at the time, was his comedy hero. C.K., too, thought that it was incredible, but he soon realized that it's the only way to keep it fresh and stay alive creatively.

>> ^spoco2:

Man, I just laughed out loud from his bit then about the bus boy... that's a joke he's only just starting on for his next year of material, and it's already showing he has not lost it yet.
I was listening to Marc Maron interviewing Chris Rock the other day, and in that they mention Louis, and talk about his throwing out his act each year and were all like 'Woah man, just slow down, chill out, you're doing too much'.
And I think that's why he's at the top. Because he does not think it's too much, because he's made that deal with himself, he's fucking stuck to it, and it is seriously reaping rewards. It's the thing which stops him getting stale. The worst thing for a comedian, for me, is when I see them do the same bit over and over. It destroys that illusion that they're just making it up there on the spot, which is what all great comedians seem like they're doing. It's only when you see them do the act a few times that you realise that all those inflections, the little asides, the 'mistakes' etc., they're all part of a well honed act. If you don't see the act over and over then you can maintain the illusion for yourself.
That's why I'm still very much into Louis.
I bought and watched Live at the Beacon on Monday and it was hilarious. $5 well spent.
