Summary

Food palatability and hedonic value play central roles in nutrient intake. However, postingestive effects can influence food preferences independently of palatability, although the neurobiological bases of such mechanisms remain poorly understood. Of central interest is whether the same brain reward circuitry that is responsive to palatable rewards also encodes metabolic value independently of taste signaling. Here we show that trpm5−/− mice, which lack the cellular machinery required for sweet taste transduction, can develop a robust preference for sucrose solutions based solely on caloric content. Sucrose intake induced dopamine release in the ventral striatum of these sweet-blind mice, a pattern usually associated with receipt of palatable rewards. Furthermore, single neurons in this same ventral striatal region showed increased sensitivity to caloric intake even in the absence of gustatory inputs. Our findings suggest that calorie-rich nutrients can directly influence brain reward circuits that control food intake independently of palatability or functional taste transduction.

It is a very sad example of irony. Ben Stein is a *very* intelligent man. Yet instead of using his intellect in the defense of science, a proven system of observation and cause and effect, he'd rather employ his smarts to defend angels, leprechauns and fairies.

I'll never forget when I watched the Chris Everett thing live on Jim Rome's show. That's exactly why I love Jim Rome. I have to go with some of you and side with Cruise on this one. He handled it well, a lot better than I think many people would especially in front of cameras. Yeah he is batshit crazy but try to look at it objectively and put aside your hatred for him. Many of you just like seeing bad things happen to rich famous people which yeah some of them are arrogant. Does Tom have a holy than thou sense of self importance probably, but why do i give a shit if anything good or bad happens to him. Not going to change my life any or make me feel any better about myself. Its the same pleasure people get from watching other train wrecks like Anna Nicole Smith, Britney Spears, and so on or those people who are still praying Paris Hilton will get hit by a car and die.
