Wiki.videoSift.com Beta (Sift Talk Post)

Where will the Wiki link be on the front page when it's ready for prime time? Will it be another top-level tab?

Also, I think that editing privileges should be given only to Silver stars or higher. It takes a little time to learn the ropes here, so I don't think we want n00bs editing. Besides, we also don't need spam or vandalism on the Wiki - and it WILL show up if you let any member edit it.

One more thing: Like @xxovercastxx stated, clear guidelines need to be established for what goes into the Wiki and what doesn't. I think the Wiki should be a How-to guide, maybe with entries that contain a little Sift history and who the admins are. I DON'T think it should include entries about specific videos (like what videos were popular at one time), or specific channels (the channels already have their descriptions at the top, along with the channel's supreme overlord), or Sift Talk posts, or ANY members (outside of the admins). We don't need to know what @blankfist fears (everything).

And @dotdude, I'm not having the problem that you're having at all, and I use Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, on a PC.

Alot of starcraft falls into the paper rock scissors syndrome.

Not really, since armies rarely contain only 1 type of unit. It's more like rock and paper and scissors vs rock and paper and scissors.

Starcraft is and still is a 2 sided player base. You can enjoy the game and beat it if you learn the basics and understand the objectives of each single player map.
However when it comes to multiplayer, there are those who try and play it single player in which you simply work with the structures and units you know and like, and attempt to fight what ever the enemy may throw at you. If possible you produce counter units to a specific unit you just got your first army wiped out with.
Then you got the person who actually understands and learns how to PvP in starcraft. This person knows almost all the units and isn't afraid to use them. He does not build what he likes.. he uses his first spawn minions to both harass the other player (resources are everything. If your collectors are dead or not collecting, you are losing) and see exactly what he is building. He then designs his army around countering it and destroying it. Alot of starcraft falls into the paper rock scissors syndrome.
It becomes a lop sided battle. Even a semi pro noob will totally trounce the average player if he sees and understands what he is building. That is what happened here.

This is frustrating to me, since you kinda have the right idea, but at the same time kinda not.
yes there are times when starcraft will be rock paper scissors, for example if your blindly make alot of shit that can only shoot ground and he makes something that flies and shoots downwards, generally however this is rare at the professional level, since perhaps a strategies biggest weakness is inflexibility.
In this case, it doesn't seem like rock paper scissors at all, just that torch has better mechanics than each player, and to a great extent its not about hand speed either, its a game of memory keepy uppys, (the game when you keep the ball in the air with only without using your hands, I don't know how else to call it) you need to remember to keep building constantly, and it only gets harder as the game progresses.

Quite frankly torch could have beaten these guys with any combination of units.

Also a word on Trevor, I love him purely because when he qualified for GSL, the community at large went "who is his guy?"

Turns out he turned up to world cyber games USA, picked up a mobile game on the day, won WCG USA, got a free trip to Beijing, and finished 3rd in the world at said mobile game, and now he plays SC2.

Yeah. looks like he's having a lot of fun /sarcasm. Doesn't this level of intensity and time invested kind of defeat the point of gaming as entertainment/escapism/stress relief? I mean, sure, maybe this is the kind of way he LIKES to play, but... I dunno... seems moronic to me.

He's arguably a professional athlete. Would you give the same criticism to Michael Jordan during one of his workouts? What about a chess grandmaster?

I hate that the English language doesn't have a better term for "Interactive digital experience" other than "game". It seriously holds back the field of computing. Any visual world or system that you interact with has to be a "game", it can't be serious or educational.

If he's competing in Korea I think it's safe to say that he's extremely good. But you're right that his competition seemed a bit pathetic.
In high school I did a similar exercise with Starcraft 1 -- 4 or 5 of my friends against another friend who was near pro gaming level. He destroyed us, and at least in my case I was pretty familiar with Starcraft.
I think it's great that the game permits such a huge range of skill levels.

It's kind of difficult to say how good this guy is when we don't know anything about these 3 players, I mean, I suck at SC, and I really suck. I dont even know like basic keyboard shortcuts, and I probably cant beat a bot (I could barely do so in SC1, but I haven really played SC2 much) so how "suck" are these "noobs"? It would be more interesting IMO with three "ok" players.

No, I'm not saying I dont think he's very good, he obviously is, I'm just saying its a bad measurement/demonstration of HOW good. if you pitted me against him, for instance, sure I'd be massacred, but I'd be massacred by a medium/below average player as well, because I suck so much. So that would be a pointless demonstration. but this vid is even more pointless, because we dont really know anything about the skills of the 3 other players.

Should Probies Graduate for a Quality Comment? (User Poll by dag)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Maybe we could build a big wall - to keep those probies from stealing our jeeerbs front page videos.

>> ^xxovercastxx:

It wasn't all that long ago that we decided quality comments weren't that valuable and castrated them. Now we want to restore them (approximately) to their former glory but only for probies? Fuck those n00bs. GTFOdag.
