AUTOMATICA 4k - Robots Vs. Music - Nigel Stanford

eric3579 says...

The people who made the video talk about it here. I listened to a bit and they mention the recording and playback speeds were mucked with a lot, but it's apparent the robots playing the instruments were real in a physical way (the music they played sucked it seems). Listening to them talk about how crazy programming the robots were was entertaining. But yes lots of movie magic type stuff im guessing.

CGI rendered tests to further fool you into thinking it's not all CG. It's been done before.

This seems like a job for Captain Disillusion!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify a bit. By CGI I don't just mean it's all 3D renders. I mean more that it's all computer trickery of some sort. Some 3D, some compositing, lots of time manipulation. Just look at how often he's clearly green screened in. Look at how the cymbals move. A robotic arm can punch through a piano? There's a lot of CG going on here. And if it's in the crazier shots, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the simpler shots.

Superheroes look ridiculous without special effects

You'd be right. Even this clip had a lot more to the set design than most effects-heavy features.

Movie magic! etc. etc.

I'd imagine quite a lot of todays TV & Movie acting is like that, even more traditional television. So much more acting on green screens and pretending to do things for the CG than we think.

Real Life Peter Griffin

Upvote for the effort, I don't think you could really get more precise than that outside of movie magic.

Just doesn't have the comedic flair for it though, should probably just stick to doing scenes from the show and switching off to normal when he's done so it's short and sweet.

Michael J Fox playing Johnny B Goode

csnel3 says...

After all these years, I didnt know he actually played guitar. I thought his Back to the Future jam was just movie magic as part of the story. And , I diidnt know he was doing this well in the present. This video has some of the only good news I've seen today.

The Real Thing - No Movie Magic

InvaderSil says...

I'm not so sure about the "no movie magic" title. These things looked like they were rehearsed, much like a movie. The events depicted in movies should be made to seem like it was spur of the moment, but that again requires lots of practice before they actual filmed. I guess you can say there were no wire harnesses, CGI, smoke and/or mirrors. Had these guys been leaping 20 feet in the air and balancing on a single sword blade, then I would reconsider.

The Last 90 Seconds of The Planet of the Apes -Classic SciFi

swampgirl says...

I forgot you posted that, it got my vote then too. There's something about 60's and 70's SciFi...can't put my finger on it. All the cgi movie magic of today can't replace it.
