Two WORST Martial Arts Techniques Ever!

The blocks from the first technique look like they're from karate. I remember learning them and thinking "this has got to be the most useless BS ever". I quit karate shortly after and have never looked back since.

Sir James Dyson Explains How His Bladeless Fan Works

lucky760 says...

I agree. It's a fascinating but mostly useless innovation that'll for the foreseeable future (until the ~$300 price tag drops by about 90%) remain nothing more than a luxury/novelty item.

You gotta admire this Dyson bloke, though. He invents some very cool stuff.

How to make the "Merovingian Knot" in your necktie

Ties are the most useless piece of clothing ever. I don't understand what it's for. I still upvoted because it's neat, and I never noticed the tie in the movie either. I'm going to bookmark this, and try it in case I ever have to wear a tie in the future.

Useless? Since when does clothing have to have a purpose? Do you wear plain uncoloured clothes? Or just a sack? If you need a purpose, then consider this: the purpose of a tie is to look good. Bingo.

Man, I hate it when I see men walking around in a suit and shirt but without a tie. It makes it look like you didn't bother finish dressing. It looks just awful: men, your suit and shirt are designed and cut to show off a tie. That V-shaped space in between your lapels is not intended to frame and show off your bare shirt button band and your big old flapping collar, it's a place to display a tie! It's a good opportunity to demonstrate your good taste (if you have any). And if the occasion is formal enough for you to consider wearing a suit... wear a tie and look even better.

Deadliest Warrior: Spartan vs Ninja

Sharp curve ahead. No really, SHARP CURVE AHEAD!!!

For those who haven't driven fully-loaded trucks of that size down curvy mountain roads: Brakes are mostly useless on a hill like that. They may affect your speed a little, but they'll catch fire long before they stop you.

Proper use of downshifting is how truckers control their speed, and it is a lot harder than it seems. I'm guessing the problems this trucker had started way before that turn. It was definitely his responsibility to keep his speed under control, but by the time he saw the turn coming up there wouldn't have been anything he could have done about it.

All that is assuming he wasn't under the influence of course. Slowing a truck that heavy while traveling downhill can take miles (or a run-away ramp).

I'm actually a car carrying member of the UAW at a small factory here in PA, and I wouldn't mind at all if this union failed.

Our company is struggling and we recently had a wave of lay-offs. As per Union contract, we had to lay off according to seniority and not ability. This has left us with a skeleton crew have filled with the most useless workers and the hard workers have to take up the slack. The younger crew we had were bright eyed and relentless, and now they're moving back in with their parents while we work overtime. The company also has it's hands tied as to who can move up the chain and into the jobs that require a higher IQ, those jobs also must be offered by seniority and they can't even use the most qualified people to fill them.

As you can imagine, the management is resentful of us and is treating us consistently worse as the year ends. To make matters worse, the union recently raised dues and now we're paying $500 a year, even though our pay raises are on hold indefinitely. State law prevents us from not paying the dues whether we're members or not.

The hard core members tell us that it would be a lot worse if we didn't have a union, and it's hard to argue with them. My take is that the company would still be there and only hard workers would be working. Their take is that after working there 20 plus years, it's the companies responsibility to keep them on, even though they're working less.

I wish I could give more insight, but most of my conversations with them are cut short by their religious fervor on the subject.

Comment Voting (Sift Talk Post)

If it feels good, do it.
________________

Your intentions are good, jonny, but I honestly think that no amount of Sift Talks will permanently change people's comment voting behavior. Personally I try to reserve comment downvotes only for the most useless and/or obnoxious comments, but I'm just one person. I didn't always do it that way, but that's how I do it now. It was just a decision I made; no one had any influence on it. And I upvote comments like a slut, because that's what I am.

Now some people may read this post and rethink their comment voting patterns, but I doubt it will have any long-lasting impact on their behavior. It's just human nature. Take this election: Some Republicans will actually cross party lines for the first time in their lives to vote for Obama, mainly because the idea of McBush/Caribou Barbie in the White House scares the living shit out of them. However in 4 years they will probably go back to voting the GOP ticket. This isn't just an American phenomenon either; it happens all over the free world.

Thus homo sapiens are doomed.

"the pentagon is not stupid."

11 billion
"The F-22 is arguably the Pentagon's most useless weapon system. Not only is it the world's most expensive fighter jet, but it was conceived in 1985 to fight a Soviet fighter jet that was never built. As wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo show, U.S. air superiority is not in doubt." -Think Progress

or

"the $81-billion submarine pushed by Sen. Joseph Lieberman, presumably to fight al-Qaida’s navy." -Truthdig

"Of the 72 programs GAO assessed this year, none of them had proceeded through system development meeting the best-practice standards for mature technologies, stable design, or mature production processes by critical junctures of the program, each of which are essential for achieving planned cost, schedule, and performance outcomes." - GAO report

Or how about...

"the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a program estimated to be worth $300 billion in sales to its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, the nation’s biggest defense contractor and most generous donor to lobbyists and politicians’ campaigns. The program to build what Lockheed boasts is “the most complex fighter ever built” is also the most expensive, with estimated acquisition costs having increased a whopping $55 billion in just the last three years.

Lockheed need not worry about future profits, because the procurement schedule on this troubled plane has been stretched out to the year 2034." -Truthdig again

Nah, the Pentagon wouldn't waste money on stupid things would they?

Battery Powered Underwater Scuba Car

Fedquip says...

Features a couple of the most useless features.

1. Drives without a driver. Seriously wtf - who the hell will ever use that feature?
2. Drives underwater. Looks cool, might look less retarded in a spy movie, but in real life who the hell is going to willingly drive their car into a lake?

meh, sorry for my negativity, i just woke up, first clip of the day this is, it looks pointless to me, its all over the news today, as we made a huge scientific breakthrough.
