The Slow Mo Guys - Convertible Aerodynamics at 1000fps

blutruth says...

My understanding is that the voltage being sent to the LED headlights is passed through a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) driver that creates a pulsing effect so that the LED receives a consistent average voltage over time and allows for the control of the LED's perceived brightness. If there is a mismatch between the PWM frequency and the frame rate of the camera, you will see pulsing or flickering. You see the same kind of effect sometimes when a camera records a helicopter and the rotors appear to be stationary like here.

At least I'm pretty sure that's what's going on.

Talk to me about why the headlights looked like they were flickering. Some sort of shutterspeed versus LED thing?

Fostech Origin 12 - the World's Fastest Suppressed Shotgun

SFOGuy says...

So, something I recently learned that might apply here; many electronic video recording devices (like, your phone)---automatically modulate the recording volume---meaning that these videos of suppressed weapons don't actually give you a real sense of how loud they are---they make it seem quieter.

canadian man faces jail for disagreeing with a feminist

oritteropo says...

I'm just as puzzled about that as @modulous. I enjoy her videos, sometimes agree with the points she's making and sometimes don't, but really don't understand why anyone would get worked up over them.

Why would you even watch them if you didn't find them interesting?

She is DEFINATELY polarizing. Anyone who listens to her or knows her work either thinks she's a shining warrior for feminism, or a self centered idiot pushing feminism back decades. Very few people who know about her work have no opinion.
If she gets EVERYONE'S knickers in a twist, she's pretty polarizing.

Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 Gameplay Trailer

VoodooV says...

For vaporware...it's amazingly....existant

It's funny to watch Star Citizen truther trolls claim it doesn't exist when there are hundreds of thousands of people who have played it and the numerous livestreams out there on youtube.

An earlier version is on my computer that I can play right now.

But yeah, keep pretending that it's some grand conspiracy perpetrated by the mustache-twirling Chris Roberts....who would have gotten away with it too..if it weren't for that meddling Derek Smart.

I got my invite to the PTU earlier this week. Sadly, I'm not going to bother with it because 1. my video card is shitty and can barely load the game in it's current state and 2, they're constantly patching it and the patches are huge and I just don't want the hassle.

I'm curious what the next excuse will be when the game is released? @Jinx, @rancor can you enlighten me? Generally the just switch some other trivial gripe instead of admitting they were wrong.

No faith is required @OverLord. The game exists and is playable albeit still in pre-pre-pre-pre alpha. The only difference is that you never hear about regular games until they've had years of development already done. With Star Citizen, we've known about the development right from the very beginning, we've seen the game grow from the basic hangar module that was first released to what it is now...warts and all.

If it were a hoax, it's the most inefficient hoax of all time. Let's waste lots of money hiring A-list actors for the single player campaign that, were it a hoax, we could just run off with the money. And tell me..what is the supposed end game for this hoax? Is Chris and Sandi going to skip town with a suitcase full of money cackling maniacally as they twirl their mustaches? Any damsels tied to the train tracks I should know about that need rescuing?

Star Citizen Bishop Speech to the Senate citizencon

This game is so painful. I really hope the SC team stops listening to the hate, I hope they can maintain their teams, maintain focus, creativity, I hope they have enough money to last another 5 years of development, I hope this game turns out great. I really hope this turns out to be better than Elite a game that I found unfortunately boring. Will revisit once Occulus comes out, smoke a fat one and go on a cosmic voyage.

SC was/is one centered around PC gaming and dreams - I spent $40.00 on this game, which isn't much in my opinion in order to help a dream, a dream that I also want to delve into. My hope is not diminished yet and I do not care about delving into the rumors, anger and frustration. It is just a motherfucking video game. One that we all hope will be unbelievably good...

Realistically, these guys have probably promised too much, hopefully all the different modules add up to something cohesive - even if they have to detract from open world shit. I don't mind if they scale back to focus on story & content as long as the crafts feel solid. The alpha the control of the ships suck ass. Hopefully, both the controls and FPS mode are tight. If they can't pull off a huge scale, open-world game... no worries, I think working it to something more linear if the game mechanics are fun. Open-world games have been shit mostly anyways, Witcher 3 is a masterpiece though.

Derek Smart is an OCD creep he can go fuck himself and his games are shit! I mean kudos to him for having a lot of talent to do it himself and get shit released even if the content sucks.

The Importance of CPR

worthwords says...

In the UK, rescue breaths are used for paediatric (1yrs-puberty). And drowning is a 'special circumstance' whereby Cardiac arrest is almost always secondary to hypoxia there rescue breaths increase survival over 'hands only' CPR,
It's in the resus manual...l https://lms.resus.org.uk/modules/m10-v2-cardiac-arrest/10346/resources/chapter_12.pdf

So not a good example in this video. However saying that any *decent* attempt at chest compression only is going to help someone who is not breathing so not to be discouraged.

Lawdeedaw said:

Actually, hands free cpr is now taught. Not rescue breath. You are right about the rest.

The Office of the Prosecutor General just notified the public that it has closed the investigation into Netzpolitik.org: neither were the published documents state secrets, nor did the journalists involved in this matter show any intent to harm the country.

Just like basically every non-hardliner said the moment this was made public. Pure intimidation, and possibly, if not probably, a pretty shady way to get legal permission to employ digital surveillance against those involved.

kceaton1 said:

Uranium 238 should be pretty safe to touch and carry, in small amounts (I don't know at what size it becomes truly dangerous to the site exposed, especially if left there for any long length of time; I'd guess anything below one pound should be perfectly fine, but for all I know it could be 30 pounds).

You just cannot do this: do not swallow or inhale any of it. Also, if it has very sharp and jagged edges and it cuts you--then a tiny piece gets into your body (then the bloodstream), same problem.

But, at least this version of Uranium isn't too hazardous, but you certainly could poison someone with it. The heavier Isotopes created from Uranium are much more dangerous (I'm sure many are aware of this); like Plutonium (made in the natural environment if nuclear reactions are going on nearby, like a Star).

We created quite a bit of Plutonium back in the day using Uranium (more specifically we used Uranium and Deuterons; Deuterons are gathered from Deuterium, which is "Heavy Hydrogen"; the Deuteron is the nucleus of a Deuterium atom).
