Who the hell measures volume by weight? Like "30oz" volume of corn syrup is the same weight as the same amount of vegetable oil?

How about using the metric system already? It's just unbelievable that one country refuses to budge and does things in the most complicated manner possible causing lots of confusion. Who the hell measures short distances in fractions when we got nice and neat decimal system that allow for precise and instantly understandable figures? 2.22cm is 2.22cm, no need to figure it out in your head or rely on memorization of large tables. Fast, how much is 7/8"?

"Gone, Gone, Gone" - (Rhode Island Teacher Says "I Quit!")

Yogi says...

This is by design. It is much easier to teach passive memorizing students than have them challenging ideas constantly, and being creative. Teachers who invigorate children's minds, challenging them and requiring of them creative independent thought are extremely important. They deserve to be paid very well, they deserve to be treated well.

I can remember the teachers who required me to think critically, I am who I am because of them.

Zero Punctuation: Far Cry 3

ChaosEngine says...

I'm loving it too, although it does have a few problems.

First, it's ridiculously easy. I'm playing on hard and I've ended up playing metagames to keep the challenge (i.e. no guns for clearing bases, knife and arrows only).

Second, the UI is awful. Crafting syringes is a pain in the arse. Everytime you craft a syringe you don't have equipped it asks you if you want to assign it a slot. Also once you've crafted all the holsters etc, you're probably carrying around half a rucksack of useless animal hides and good luck trying to sell them easily (double click on animal hide, confirm, repeat ad nauseam).

Finally, even though they've implemented looting there's no real reward for it. You end up with a few trinkets, and about $10 or so each time (while you've got about 10 grand in your wallet and nothing to spend it on, because you own all the guns).

But these are nit-picks. It's great fun, there are some memorable characters ("watch out for Vaas, he'll enslave your arse!") and the environment is just stunning.

Although I will say it's turned me into an ecological disaster. I was swimming out to an island and I say a manta ray. Did I stop to admire this majestic animal?

Hell no, I knifed that beastie to death in case I could get me a manta ray hat or something.

Then I was eaten by a shark. There's a lesson in there somewhere....

Honest Dark Knight Rises Trailer

I unashamedly loved this movie. I was vaguely aware of plot holes, but I really didn't give a fuck as I was simply enjoying myself too much.

Contrast that with Prometheus. I went expecting a good movie and after the frickin *opening scene* I was worried. By the halfway point, the sheer stupidity of the characters and the story had me rooting for everyone to die (and there wasn't even a central memorable villian to get behind!)

There were only a few things in Nolans Batman trilogy I didn't like: the over the top voice, and the fight scenes. (Batman is supposed to be one of the greatest martial artists in the world, and we didn't get one decent fight)

A pity then that there are absolutely no memorable characters of note.
This was in no way a character-driven movie. If it was you'd focus on one or two people and the story would be simplified. This was all about the plot which asks the characters to flit around doing stupid things.

I still don't get how the Nolan who gave us Memento ended up producing these awful, bland, poorly constructed action movies.

I used to laugh at Schumacher and Burton but their more fantastical imaginings of Batman work better. This is a man dressed as a bat with a stupid voice. To try to frame this "realistically" in a film doesn't work. And particularly not when you constantly take the liberties shown in this video. And the second film with that laughable cell phone tracking tech just underlined how lazy and poor these films were.

I'll say the first half of Batman Begins was good but then veered sharply away from the comics which inspired it. In fact the main problem with the trilogy is that ripping off Frank Miller and trying to mesh that with a more Hollywood style sensibility just didn't work.

Wasn't going to upvote until the Red Letter Media guys appeared. The constant nit-pickery of DKR gets on my tits. It's a character driven movie! None of the "plot holes" ever got in the way of enjoying it for me

Why Doesn't MTV Play Music Videos Anymore?

Deano says...

>> ^CreamK:

What a load of bull... All thou he is right on one thing: we would see only carly-rae-rihanna-gaga-shit on that channel that we already are been forcefed. The reason they went for reality route is money, specifically advertisement value of "original programming" is way higher than any bunch of short 3-5 minute video clips, cost of doing one minute of reality show is hundreds of times cheaper than one minute of a music video.
It certainly is not because we steal music, it ain't about us wanting to hear Nirvana, that all is just pure lying. It's cost per minute vs revenue per minute.
Music videos are more important than ever, when you go to youtube and search for that one song you want to hear, you expect to see a music video. Even if it's one of the "b-side" songs you still expect it to have a visual part of the story..
The problem isn't our generation but the 14 year old girls, they get all the attention since they are most willing to spend money on fabricated dreams. Our generation, the 80-90s kids grew up seeing really ground breaking good music and wish to see more real art from the next generation. i would love to scream at MTV "too much dubstep", "kids these days are crazy, i don't understand this"... Now the music i see from youngsters is "this is incredibly stupid, monotonous, no substance crap" as we undertand very well what that Nicki Minaj crap is about.

It's not "pure lying". There's been a massive drop in what was a lucrative CD market. It made sense to push music videos when the tv screen was the only one you had access to.

With both those changes you can hardly expect to attract advertisers with music programming. Piracy has been a factor and while it serves certain interests to overstate it, the switch from physical media to downloads meant huge revenue drops.

Are videos still important? Yes but as he says the budget for these things has plummeted. And probably for the better. The more memorable videos of recent years have probably not suffered for the lack of speedboats and explosions.

Iron Man 3 -- Official Trailer Marvel | HD

Retroboy says...

Trailer was very lacking in information, and I caught a whiff of emo in there. WRONG.

Where's Downey's signature humor, ffs? That sold Iron Man to me, and it was the best and most memorable part of the Avengers trailer. They should have taken a lesson on how solidly that was received.

Iron Man as portrayed by Downey shouldn't completely grow up. Ever.

It's not that bad... for a sitcom.

He must have an amazing, if not photographic memory. I think most actors need to have amazing memorization skills just to do their job but I've noticed that some stand out more than the rest and he is one of them.

Autistic girl Memorized Coppelia Ballet - UNBELIEVABLE!

Yogi says...

>> ^sillma:

How is this unbelievable exactly? I'm not a ballet expert, do the adult ballerinas use autocue for ballet moves? I'm pretty sure they've memorized it as well. Or is it considered unbelievable because you somehow thing autistic people have impaired memory and they shouldn't be able to do this? Or perhaps because you think young kids shouldn't possibly be able to do this?

Just think about it. What differentiates a professional ballerina and a child.

My point exactly. Nothing THAT big, assuming that children can't memorize things like that is just ignorant. Children are much more able to concentrate on things they truly love than any adult that's ever existed, and it's usually even more the case with autistic people.

Ok, I don't see what the point of your original comment was or this one. It's a nice video.
