Instead of arguing with a Zealot

Jon Stewart on Fox News Sunday

peggedbea says...

stewart is always on. i like how he stuck it in there that fox viewers are consistently more misinformed than viewers of other networks and how wallace didn't deny it. i also like the mark twain comparison. i also like how stewart is never ever made an ass of on any of the fox interviews he does, try as they might.

when i watch stewart do these interviews lately he feels like this dude who shows up at my house randomly to work in the garden and make food. stoned and silly and aimless until you get him tuned in and realize how jaw droppingly brilliant and engaged he is. i like it. there's a word for that air they carry, and i dont know what it is.

My feeling on this whole thing...
"I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."
-Mark Twain
I'm quite sure i could not have said it better.

I prefer this one:

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that"

Well if you didn't think the appendix was dumb, what about tonsils, your adenoids? They screw up ALL the time.

I always love that Mark Twain quote. I swear if there was a time traveler, Twain comes close as his insights are very good. Although, he could be very vitriolic.

Changing the original language of Tom Sawyer is so fucking stupid on so many levels.
a) It's a historic book by one of America's most bad ass writers. You are tainting it's historical integrity and fucking with the writings of a genius and American icon.
b) Mark Twain knew what he was doing when he used that word. Mark Twain was clearly a progressive thinker on the subject of race. He knew it was an ugly word and used it to make a point.
c) We shouldn't be shielding our youth from our racist past. If we forget that lesson of history, we're more likely to repeat it.
(preaching to the choir, I know, just needed to get that out of my system)

The change was an attempt to circumvent the prior banning of the book by schools. I have far more of a problem with schools banning the book than a company trying to get around the ban.

The way some people talk about this (ie- this video) makes it seems like it was some guy's (or white people's) random idea because he didn't like a book containing "nigger". Hopefully any teacher using the altered version would have the foresight to use the alteration itself as part of the cultural and historical lesson.

Nice tits.

Honestly, I was curious as to why you would upvote it if you had issues with the content. Anyway, I apologize for the misunderstanding, I thought the statement was directed towards me. I retract my elitist reference comment!

If you would note, I upvoted your video. I can downvote if I want, but I seldom do. I saw no reason to. I'm all for debate. I was attacking the outcry about the "censorship", not the poster. Try to not take it personally. If you posted a video about pedophiles, I wouldn't think you were one.

Also, there was nothing in my comment that attacked you personally, so as for the elitist characterization, "Fuck you very much."

As for the lyrics being offensive or not, Mark Twain was talking about a man everyone in that part of history felt no issue calling "Nigger Jim". Twain, like Knopfler, was just passing that along in HIS story as well. I'm against censorship, I'm also against sensationalizing minor things because they diminish the large ones.

Oh PULEEASE! It's deemed offense for PUBLIC AIRPLAY. No one is out confiscating fucking CDs. The use of the word IS pejorative, by the way. He's using it as a demeaning term.
This makes me howl. Down in the States, the clean versions used for YEARS. You want to know what I think is ridiculous censorship? Getting rid of "Nigger Jim" out of Huckleberry Finn. Discuss THAT, not this non-issue.

Yes, well when you can tell me how to fit all that into the title I'll change it.

As far as the use of the word in the song being demeaning in this context, I'm sorry but your 100% WRONG! He's quoting something he overheard two appliance delivery men said about musicians. NOT directing the statements to anyone in particular. Wow you're just as quick to judge as they are. I bet you didn't even listen to the song or read the lyrics to see exactly in which context the word was used before passing judgment either. Jewel's "Pieces of Me" uses the term faggot as well. I suppose they'll have to ban that song too huh? The one thing you are right about is it is a non-issue, hence why I posted it.

Here's a few more they missed. http://blogs.westword.com/backbeat/2011/01/canada_bans_money_for_nothing_but_still_missed_a_few_offensive_songs.php

NMA: Publisher censors Huckleberry Finn, Moby Dick next?

kevinC says...

A new edition of Mark Twain’s classic book “Huckleberry Finn” is causing controversy. The said novel is the famous one in which Mark Twain has been noted for. Many of his works though have been suppressed for various reasons. The publisher, NewSouth Books, has made some startling omissions. The book has had all the words some people discover offensive left out. Classic novel Huckleberry Finn censored in new edition. Twain used dialog that was very common, and was really fervently against racism in any form. Let's hope that payday loans were not used to fund the censorship of an excellent novel.

NMA: Publisher censors Huckleberry Finn, Moby Dick next?

vaporlock says...

Here is more on this.

quote:
In a bold move compassionately advocated by Twain scholar Dr. Alan Gribben and embraced by NewSouth, Mark Twain’s Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn also replaces two hurtful epithets that appear hundreds of times in the texts with less offensive words, this intended to counter the “preemptive censorship” that Dr. Gribben observes has caused these important works of literature to fall off curriculum lists nationwide.
