Guy with huge balls drags Great White Shark back into sea

Am i right in thinking that dragging a shark backwards can drown it?

I think "drown" is probably the wrong term technically. They extract oxygen from water, so it's impossible for them to drown (i.e. for their (non-existent) lungs to fill with water). But many shark species' gills function in a way such that they have to be moving forward in order for their gills to extract the oxygen. So I suppose dragging a shark backwards technically would be suffocating it (i.e. it's not getting enough oxygen to "breathe").

However, apparently science textbooks claim that if sharks don't move forward they "drown".

*shrug*

Le GreenBoy & Dirty Girl. A super normal eco hero in Paris

I know, Green Boy is unhelpful to the point that he seems to be a parody of misdirected enviro efforts. Green Boy is to Captain Planet what the Tick is to Batman.

Hey Green Boy, those aerosol cans of spray paint probably aren't very good for the environment, nor is it good to spray them on the ground where the rain will wash residual paint into places it could harm marine life.

Rocketboom Oil Slick - Fly Over of the Gulf Oil Spill

"Learn from the mistakes"
Ya right! They've never taken the time to learn from any other spill!
It's the cost of doing business from the Big oil companies. The companies that put their own laws in place so they don't have to answer to anyone. They are the ones with the money, the ones with the power, the ones who control everything we do. They have made it a monopoly that wen need to rely on, right down to the cars we drive. we don't need gas powered cars, but they ensure that we don't have a choice. Major wars are fought and people are slaughtered, all for the manipulation of this resource.

If they don't care about the lives dying over wars due to oil control, why would they care about the water and marine life. Their only concern is how can they make a buck off this and continue to control a resource that isn't theirs.

This is an embarrassment for them at best!

"Larson's sense of humor, while original, can also be confusing, as in a comic dubbed "Cow Tools", which was widely misunderstood. Another famous example requires the reader to know obscure facts about sea life, a comic that was misunderstood by a marine-biologist friend of Larsons. He also occasionally drew cartoons commenting on celebrities or current events, although these are rare."

we probably don't have to know about marine life for this cartoon, but maybe it comments on events from 1983? meh, probly not. ok, i give up.

Renewable Energy From The Deep Ocean

Mysling says...

So, as far as I've understood, they are essentially creating energy by cooling the warm upper waterlayer, and heating the lower waterlayer.

As charliem pointed out, the climatic effect of this has to be thoroughly studied before it is even partially viable. Isn't the climate of every coastal country severely dependent on the flow of the major warm and cool watercurrents? As well as most marine life migratory patterns?

Seems like a very dangerous force to mess with. I would by far prefer for the effort to be focused on nuclear- or sun-based alternatives.
