8 Months pregnant woman tasered by police

artician says...

Brutality has skyrocketed since those fucking little things were given to cops. They don't even need to hide their abuse anymore, they can just torture people in broad daylight, claim it's non-lethal, and say they're within their rights.

I know Illinois is supposed to have all sorts of racial issues, but this is fucking ridiculous. Though I fear the manhunt that will follow it, it's got to be only a matter of time before some act of rebellion against law enforcement. At some point someone has to just have enough of this shit, and defend themselves with force.

Police perform illegal house-to-house raids in Boston

newtboy says...

As I said, "We're scared" or in other words 'exigent circumstances' are not legitimate reasons for suspension of civil rights. If you believe a 'manhunt' makes it legal for unwarranted search and seizures then I ask you, when is it NOT legal for them to enter your home without a warrant? There is ALWAYS a 'manhunt' in operation, technically every person with a warrant out is a 'manhunt in progress'. Your suggestion leaves no conclusion except you believe we have already given up the right protecting us from unwarranted search and seizure in our own homes. I disagree with that assertion, and suggest that during these types of extreme circumstances are exactly the times when it is imperative to exercise your rights, not capitulate and allow them to simply strip those rights from you or ignore them without consequence.
If they were in pursuit of a suspect and KNEW he was on or had traveled through the property, that's another story, but that's not the case here.
I did not hear that martial law had been implemented...there may be some validity to that argument, I'm less sure about that circumstance.
Still I suggest that rights only exist if they can be used at ALL times, not just when it's convenient for the government to allow them.

They're not illegal searches, a warrant isn't needed if it's under exigent circumstances (i.e. Martial Law, manhunt, etc).
If this were under different circumstances, then yes, I'd be upset, but they're looking for someone who's already killed, and injured people, and who's already shown behavior that they will attack on a whim.

All Time 10s - Banned Video Games

Ajkiwi says...

NZ is, however, considerably more lenient about games than Australia, whose lack of an R18+ rating has resulted in numerous bans and cuts.

Bans in NZ are interesting in that the media in question has to be EXTREME to be banned: NZ has an AO rating for games which is accepted by the gaming public and regularly used.

Manhunt and Manhunt 2 were banned as "injurious to the public good", in that the only way to succeed in the game was to escalate the violence against characters in increasingly horrific manners, and the game rewarded greater and greater brutality in such a way as to desensitize the player.

Postal 2 was banned by the chief censor with the comments: "...The quantity and cruelty of the violence can be gradually accommodated and increased as the player becomes more callous and inured to the violence inflicted...The constant crass racist, sexist, and homophobic references motivate the player's crimes and tend to further encourage the player to accept and escalate the violence he or she inflicts."

Whoa.

US Soldier Picks up a Wired IED

I went on a manhunt once. I just got back from Nam. I was hitchhiking through Oregon. Next thing I know there's a bunch of cops chasing after me through the woods! I had to take them all out, it was a bloodbath!

That must have been so stressful! I recommend holidays in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Burma.

Anthony Hopkins on Hannibal Lecter

therealblankman says...

>> ^renatojj:

Wow, if he stayed in character all the time, I bet he'd be chewing on Jodie Foster's ribs before the end of the movie. That's how amazing this actor is.

Yeah, fair enough but I still prefer Brian Cox's take on "Hannibal Lecktor" in Manhunter. Hopkins likens his performance to a children's monster tale and he's right- his lecter has the characteristics of a classic movie monster. Cox on the other hand was chillingly real.

I've always wondered why Brian Cox didn's reprise the role in Silence of the Lambs, he refuses to comment on it.

edit: Okay, he has spoken about it, if anyone's interested this is a very good interview http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/1075052/brian_cox_interview_manhunter_hannibal_the_cannibal_adaptation_michael_mann_and_brett_ratner.html

Sword Fight Scene from Rob Roy (1995)

therealblankman says...

>> ^kronosposeidon:

Tim Roth was such an excellent baddie in this film. You SO wanted Rob Roy to dice him up like Hannibal Lecter.

This might be the best sword-fight ever captured on film. Certainly is my favorite.

Interesting you bring up Hannibal Lecter. Brian Cox (who was in Rob Roy) was the original, and still the best actor to play the role in "Manhunter" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091474/. His Hannibal Lecktor was menacing and chilling- much more so than Anthony Hopkins in my opinion. Tom Noonan as the serial killer "The Tooth Fairy" was positively terrifying and utterly convincing.

Now, as for Videosift's very own crazed killer, I wonder how @choggie is doing these days?

Guy in wheelchair gets taken down by two cops

DrewNumberTwo says...

Did he have any weapons? Was he resisting? For how long and in what ways did he resist? Was he actually disabled? Did he have accomplices nearby? For all I know that was the end of a city wide manhunt of a heavily armed guy that had already fought off a dozen officers. Yeah, that's a stretch. Maybe it was something simple like resisting arrest for an extended period. Maybe he was striking the officers. Who knows? Without seeing more, we are missing at least half the story. Just because a man is sitting in a chair with wheels on it doesn't mean that he isn't dangerous.
