Just a anecdotal based response: Left my 3 year old, who was asleep buckled in his seat (which he cannot undo), in the car on an overcast day, 68 degrees out, doors locked. I left a second cell phone on monitor, so I could hear him if he woke up. Went in to a strip mall store 50 yards away from the car.
I hear him wake up, so I come out to check on him, and there's some man, apparently having banged on the window to wake him up, looking at me like I was trying to kill him. Apparently took my license plat and called child services, who eventually called me, my wife, my parents, and did a full investigation. I had almost the same experience, but I'm white and privileged so did not get arrested or have my children removed. I'm confident it could have been a lot worse if I was near the poverty line. I also received a similar lecture:
"We recognize that temperature and weather were ok, but do you recognize how unsafe it was to leave him unsupervised?"
"No, I don't. What could have happened? He was secure and unable to come out of the chair, the doors were locked, and he was monitored"
"Well some one could have smashed the window and taken him"
"Really? A stranger abduction, from a locked car, in broad daylight?"
"Well, what about if the police were called, and you were arrested in front of him. Wouldn't that be traumatic?"

And there they are right. And there you have it - the real danger is not any ACTUAL danger, it's our own fear. FDR had it right.

@newtboy I wonder If this is a rampant problem, or is this story being pushed for a larger ideological objective? Mostly I just don't like his 1970s porn mustache

Dubai: An Absolute Mess!

spawnflagger says...

I've been to Dubai, I think drivability is more important than walkability when it's 43C (110F) outside. And they do have public transportation (with air-conditioned stations). And all of the malls in Dubai are quite bustling, many people and many shops (mostly small and medium), and walkable because it's air-conditioned. I guess Google Maps Street View has its limits...

Back-To-School Essentials | Sandy Hook Promise

LAMO such propaganda and fear mongering.

The left do not care about saving people from getting shot or killed. Its only a political tool to spread over hyped fear to take all guns away from the public.

Generally speaking:
99% of all gun shooting are illegally obtained guns of Democrat controlled cities.

99% of of shooting are non NRA members.

School - mall- etc shootings represent less that 1% of shootings but get 80% of the national press coverage.

LEGO James Bond Aston Martin DB5

Checked out the Brickmania store in the Mall of America the other day. Lots of cool Lego models like this of both real and fictional vehicles, thought about getting a Huey model for my Dad, then I looked at how much they wanted for it.

Chicago Police Leaving Bait Truck full of Nikes Near Park

Sagemind says...

I just see a bunch of people (police and citizens) standing around.

Context? What's going on. I don't see or hear anything wrong.
There may be, but this video doesn't tell us anything.
They aren't hiding. Were there arrests made? The lights are flashing so pretty much what I'm seeing isn't a secret.

Bait cars / trucks are used everywhere.
There's nothing wrong with it.
In my opinion, it's close to entrapment - but it's NOT.

These tactics are used where I am from as well, usually in mall parking lots to see if someone will break in and steal from parked cars.

Thieves will break in and steal - that's it.
If they do, they should be charged. If they aren't breaking in, then no big deal - right?

Scaling A Climbing Wall With No Hands

bremnet says...

Good job, great balance, calves aplenty, but "Proof"? The holds are closer together than the ones on the Kiddy Klimber for under 5's at the Dixie Mall, so you might want to check the "Too Big for This Ride" ruler at the entrance. Today's challenge - how about a 5.5? Have fun!

Angry pedestrian gets instant karma

harlequinn says...

You don't have well thought out opinions. Your examples are very poor.

Failing to avoid getting hit by a car as a pedestrian may or may not be the pedestrian's fault. I could give you literally thousands of examples where it is not the pedestrian's fault (and I bet the statistics show this to be true the majority of the time) but I'll let you Google them yourself.

I sure as hell hope you're a spring chicken because if someone veers off the road at a high enough speed directed at you, you're going to have a hard time getting out of the way.

BTW, I'll let my mates who are still paramedics know to tell any pedestrians injured by cars (or family thereof for the deceased ones) that it was their fault, even when it wasn't.

This one is just for you:

People walking out in front of cars and getting creamed because of their idiotic belief that simply being right makes them indestructible?

That's hill-AIR-ee-us. E. I. A.

Crash your car into a tree? That's 100% your fail.
Crash your car into a pedestrian? That's 100% your fail.
Fail to avoid getting hit by a car as a pedestrian? THAT is YOUR fail.

Japan Does Computer Commercials Better

spawnflagger says...

I stopped in a Mouse computer store (small section on 1 floor of a much larger 9 floor "tech mall" in Tokyo). Nothing especially impressive. Computers in Japan are > 15% more expensive (and 1-2 CPU generations behind) computers sold in the US.

Nice commercial though.

If this happened here in the U.S. they would sue the mall for negligence and pain and suffering. Then sue to get distribution rights for this video.
