The Wolfman TRAILER - Benicio Del Toro vs. Hugo Weaving

deputydog says...

it's a shame they couldn't produce a trailer that didn't show the transformation. have these people no imagination?

also, good to see gollum back in work after lotr. he's a great actor.

I assume it's a good thing that this doesn't appear to be attached to a major studio. Then I read that they are owned by Sony. So I don't know how big a release this will be. Normally you'd expect this to be set in the states and have some big names.

Peter Jackson isn't a big enough name for you? It feels more real to me that it is set in South Africa without the "big-name stars". I'm tired of seeing the same old movie plots with the same old actors...in the same old locations...

That's the thing - I wonder if this is going to be an uncompromised sci-fi gem without the usual Hollywood bollocks or if Jackson is there to ensure it's commercial enough. I hope he was there just to give it enough momentum to get it made.

Still I don't understand the fuss about Jackson. The LoTR films were enjoyable but I wouldn't want to see them again soon.

Let's hope that there's a cracking story to go with the visuals.

Those would be 'Theoden' and 'Morgoth' though. Not that I would know - I most certainly did not read the LotR books each more than 5 times in my teens, noooo...

George Lucas sucks, or: one of the many reasons why the new trilogy is so much worse than the old (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

videosiftbannedme says...

Gotta agree. I spent a long time defending Lucas. Afterall, he took the majority of the money made from Star Wars and dumped it into ILM. He did the same with ESB and ROTJ. He has continually pushed for better technology in cinema to not only tell the story, but in appreciating it (ie. digital projection, THX, etc.) His contributions to the development of cinema cannot be overstated. I won't say that without him, we wouldn't have T2, LOTR, etc, as assuredly, someone would have come along eventually.

But I don't believe Lucas is to blame for the overuse of CGI, simply because he invested in it initially. I do agree the second trilogy (first?) was worse due to its heavy reliance on CG. But everyone overuses it unfortunately; using it as a crutch, as opposed to good story or limited use in the proper context.

With all that said, he is a cash whore. How many versions of the original trilogy are there?

1. Original P&S VHS
2. Original widescreen VHS
3. "Updated" P&S VHS
4. "Updated widescreen VHS
5. "Updated V2" fullscreen DVD
6. "Updated V2" widescreen DVD
7. non-animorphic widescreen original trilogy DVD

And Roddenberry's estate is even worse. Oh well, what can you do?

fuck the bible. it's got inspirational language, but so does the lord of the rings.. and LOTR has more to back up it's story

To be fair, LOTR is thought to be inspired by stories from the bible, although not as overtly as the stories of C. S. Lewis.

I know you shouldn't bother with it if the story and characters are great, but I got so damn turned off by those bad CG animations that I don't think I could watch this without getting angry. =(
Must. Be. More. Tolerant. bangs head against the wall

Typical Hollywood sensibilities. Good Scifi has existed far longer than good CGI. Dr. Who, Metropolis, Tron, Videodrome, The BBC Hitchhiker's Guide, the original Star Wars, Time Bandits, Repo Man, Brazil... dare I throw out cult classic scifi shlep like Krull, Rocky Horror Picture Show, or the ingenius (though not scifi) pre-LotR Peter Jackson flicks? You're killin' me, Smalls.

What is the best sci-fi/fantasy movie series? (User Poll by Throbbin)

peggedbea says...

so as the only girl here amongst all you nerdy virgins, i will leave a comment.

star trek gets my vote for the sheer emotional appeal. (and also my crush on patrick stewart)
i remember getting so excited to watch tng with my dad
and getting history lessons while watching all the old episodes
and the excitement that built in my house before a new star trek movie came out and then the 15 minute ride home in the oldsmobile talking about what a let down it was and then still buying the thing on vhs and watching it 150times over the summer
oh and when we discovered books on tape, well we listened to every star trek book ever every time we got in the car
the sustainability of the star trek series alone
decades and decades and decades of show, movies, books. pure greatness.

im too young to have that grand star wars feel you are all masturbating about. so thats all irrelevant. i am old enough to remember the retarded overhype of the prequels and how much they so so suck. so that kills alot of the appeal

lotr it has plenty of good qualities sure but..nah
1. because im more of a scifi nerd and a no no on the fantasy nerd part
and
2. because the movies droned and dragged toooo much

and matrix. aldkjfaldkjfa;ldkjfomygodihatekeanureevessssoooomuchexceptforbillandtedsexcellentadventureadsf

harry potter i can appreciate these for what they are and i wont say theyre bad. but again im not big on the fantasy.
