Girls Going Wild in Red Light District

newtboy says...

Actually, you presented one (as I said, the WSJ one is only available to subscribers) that NEVER said it was on the rise.
That it is still a problem is a fallacious argument, just like saying illegal liquor is still (no pun intended) a problem. It still exists, but is far from a 'problem', and certainly far less of a problem than it was before legalization. Your position makes me feel like you might see an episode of moonshiners and believe it's a major issue in America that needs serious legal intervention, and you might suggest something like the return of prohibition as a solution. You would be wrong.
I felt I presented an opinion based on logic.

If you need more data you can research it yourself...I'm done. I've provided two separate articles that indicate that human trafficking is still a problem and on the rise even in a country where prostitution has been legalized.

You have presented nothing but an opinion based on a hunch.

If I were in that plane, group singing would be the worst part of it. I absolutely loathe any kind of pressure to participate in group vocalization.

Getting Locked Up For Drinking a Half & Half Arizona Ice Tea

Jaer says...

Random guy walks up says he's a cop, doesn't show any badge. I have a feeling he wasn't really a cop, but just an asshole who worked at the liquor shop.

If this isn't staged, I hope that this douche with handcuffs either gets hit with impersonating a police officer, or if he is a police officer, get's fired for what happened.

The guy wasn't in the wrong at all, only thing that someone could "complain" about is that he was loitering, but if he had just bought that drink from that store, then it's no longer loitering.

Worst Product Placement in TV

shatterdrose says...

People started skipping commercials, then bitched about commercials, and then pirated to avoid commercials, then tivo'd pirated material to avoid commercials . . . What did you expect?

But seriously, this isn't new. It's so old it's frightening that people are only realizing they're being sold to through product placement.

Grocery stores . . . the company pays the grocery store to be placed at eye level.

Smokers . . . companies used to pay (and still do) pay hot chicks to go to bars and clubs and smoke their brand. Or vodka. My neighbor does liquor promotions. That's all he does. Hires hot 18 year old to go pass out vodka.

Why? It works. Simple.

Weapons of Mass Discussion - Universal Background Checks

aaronfr jokingly says...

Just like when the government used the driver's license database to go and steal everyone's cars. Or that other time when they issued liquor licenses so that they knew where to confiscate the alcohol for their Christmas parties. And don't forget when the government gave out fishing licenses and then enforced a mandatory recall of all fishing poles.

The system we have works but is not enforced. The new background checks will lead to a registry for confiscation.

Young man shot after GPS error

Jerykk says...

Sure. Alcohol, for example, clearly does more harm than it does good if alcohol-related death statistics are accurate. The question is whether or not guns actually do more harm than good and that's a difficult question to answer. There are certainly other countries with strict gun laws but those are different countries with different populations, different economies and different cultures. In an ideal world, banning guns would solve all our problems. Crime rates would decrease and nobody would have anything to fear. Unfortunately, I don't think that would happen in reality. Criminals would still get guns (because they don't care about laws) and there would still be gun-related deaths (albeit fewer), in addition to all the unrelated violent crimes. I'd be surprised if overall crime didn't increase to compensate for the lack of guns and the inability for civilians to protect themselves.

It just seems to me that the recent uproar about gun laws is a reactionary response to the occasional shooting spree. The vast majority of gun-related crimes are committed using pistols (such as the one used in this story), yet everyone is focused on assault rifles which are almost never used. Then everyone is ignoring the fact that smoking and alcohol cause significantly more deaths than guns do. Why is no one trying to ban those? Oh, right, we've tried that already and it failed. Banning liquor during the prohibition only resulted in criminals getting the upper hand, just as banning guns would do today.

A good way to judge the effectiveness of gun laws is by comparing Florida to Washington D.C. Floria basically has no gun laws. You can buy assault rifles in garage sales. No licenses or registrations required. It's essentially the Wild West. Conversely, D.C. has strict gun laws. No assault rifles, no automatic weapons, no concealed carry, no open carry, an extensive registration and permit process, etc. However, despite all this, D.C. had more than double the violent crime rate of Florida in 2011 and more than triple the murder rate.

Drunk Icelandair passengers being taped to seat

mintbbb says...

YT description continues:

'Arthorsson, who is a civil engineer who works in Trinidad and Tobago had visited his family in the Icelandic capital but was returning home to be with his fiancée on the Caribbean island.
After police removed him from the flight he was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was treated for alcohol poisoning and luckily for him, Federal authorities declined to prosecute the case.
It was while aboard the New York-bound flight that Arthorsson was duct-taped to his seat by fellow passengers after attacking one woman, spitting on other passengers and screaming the plane was going to crash.
A friend of one of the observing passengers, Andy Ellwood of New York, posted a picture of the subdued flyer to his Tumblr with an account of the incident.
The 'passenger drank all of his duty free liquor on the flight from Iceland to JFK yesterday,' Ellwood wrote.'

Actual Gun/Violent Crime Statistics - (U.S.A. vs U.K.)

bmacs27 says...

People don't just collect them. They enjoy shooting them. I don't own any, yet I can see why firing some FMJs from a Bushmaster would be fun. Similarly, people like to get drunk (a much more common hobby). I can also see why that might be fun. As you might expect, that hobby results in many more fatalities than all gun related deaths, yet the prohibition of alcohol is not on the table.

This myth that guns only exist to kill things needs to go. Most guns never kill anything. They are fun to shoot, just like slingshots and boomerangs. I would never say the only purpose of a boomerang is killing. For all of the above the primary purpose is entertainment. I'm of the opinion that methods of entertainment should not be forcibly banned by the government unless they represent a significant problem. I won't be convinced that ARs have crossed that threshold until everyone is willing to kiss off their liquor as well.

doesn't anyone else think that stopping mass shootings is just a side benefit of working to fix the larger problem? VERY few people in the US are killed in mass shootings (compared to other sources of death), but we do have millions of people obsessed with implements of death. The collection of tools for killing is one of the biggest hobbies in this country. That's messed up! We are messed up.
And on a deeper level, why are we more prone to random mass murder than are other populations? Only a few may do it.. but do you really think that the underlying sickness is limited to those that act on it in this way? These people are mushrooms poking out here and there from the huge rotten mass underneath.
