Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: The Lottery

PHJF says...

Coincidentally, North Carolina also has a state-run monopoly on its liquor sales, and NC average teacher salaries have declined by fifteen percent over the past decade.

If I were cynical, I might even say NC is deliberately cultivating stupid people as a resource.

buzzfeed women drinking whiskey for he first time

artician says...

"Not as bad as Vodka"?! wtf, Vodka is about the cleanest hard-liquor you can get....

Anyway, Jack Daniels should NOT be considered whiskey in the first place. Shitty American trash. Give me a Glenmorangie or Macallan any day.

May well be the stupidest thing ever said in a church

Rise of the Super Drug Tunnels: California's Losing Fight

Jerykk says...

I'm not really concerned if someone is an addict or a criminal. I'm simply concerned with the repercussions of hard drugs being made readily available for anyone to use. The prohibition did increase crime, sure, but the availability of liquor since then has caused far more deaths and ruined many more lives. Hell, in 2010, alcohol killed almost as many people in the U.S. as guns did. Tobacco causes more than 5 million deaths worldwide each year. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it isn't harmful. The widespread availability of liquor and tobacco has caused more damage than the entire war on drugs.

As for education, I don't think that's the root of the problem. Everyone knows that smoking is unhealthy and that alcohol is addictive and that driving while drunk is incredibly dangerous. The problem isn't lack of awareness. The problem is apathy. People know these things yet do them anyway because they just don't care. The momentary relief/pleasure derived from liquor and cigarettes is more important to them. If all drugs were legalized, I have no doubt that more people would use them because they'd be easier to get and people don't really care about the downsides.

Rise of the Super Drug Tunnels: California's Losing Fight

Jerykk says...

My point is that even with regulation, alcohol and cigarettes are causing plenty of harm to society. Check the statistics for drunk driving incidents and health issues caused by smoking. If alcohol and cigarettes were banned, they would be harder to obtain and therefore the harm they cause would be decreased.

Conversely, if you legalize hard drugs like cocaine and heroin (which are scientifically proven to be detrimental to your health and livelihood in general), the usage of said drugs and their destructive effects will only increase. Marijuana is irrelevant to this argument, as it isn't addictive and its effects aren't harmful. If you only want to legalize marijuana and not heroin, cocaine, PCP, meth, LSD, etc, I'm in full agreement.

Regulation will never be completely effective, as people will often ignore laws if they really want something (see the current drug situation). But by banning something, you at least make it slightly harder to obtain. It's a tricky situation with no perfect solution. By banning something, you are empowering the criminals who can supply it. But by making something legal and easily obtained, you are also promoting its use. Sure, the government makes a lot of money from liquor and cigarette taxes but those two products have ruined many lives in the process.

In the past the most sexual harassment has come from gay men and usually verbally. They are kinky bastards, The most recent episode came from a dude following me down a city block from the train that asked if he could "suck my dick". And I sort of giggled, and was like "nah man". And we had a conversation about it further and I told him, "It's cool, man... I'm just not really into it". He was INSULTED and walked away.

I had also been taken advantage of by a girl who put drugs into my hard liquor. Technically, in my opinion, I think it was a sort of assault because, honestly, I just had no idea what was going on, but, I am cool with it and just left it at that.

There are more instances - but I mean these days I live one train stop to San Fran but not in SF - that is like a suburb in the city and I am cool... I've put it all in perspective and appreciate living just a jump from "The Shit".

I know my friend is strong but yet she does not put up with bullshit. She is also batshit insane as well but in a good way. She approaches life as art every single day. She is a true being and a true woman. We throw around the concept of having a relationship and honestly, I DO love her. When we say goodbye as we have over the last decade she will say "I love you"... I told her how much I love her once but when we part... I just smile. She knows I love her. If the topic is raised I always say to her... it's just not in the cards

No need to apologize.

I just wanted to get that little bit out there.

There is so much misinformation about the nature of this shite.

I didn't want to put my little comment on the comment stream, because I didn't want to distract from the TOTALLY COOL story you shared.

So I snuck it over here, for those folks who read all comments.

I was sharing my bit for my own purposes, sneaky devil that I am. Sorry you thought I was sending a different message -- I totally DID NOT think that you were saying she deserved it.

I think there is something different for men being sexually harassed than there is for women, since you brought it up.

Speaking from experience, I am -- I keep saying that my first reaction was to slough off the assault against me as funny. It was amazing to watch myself descend into this ... quagmire... of sexual objectification within 15 minutes. To be seen as nothing other than a piece of female meat available for this tiny guy to rub against. To feel so invisible as a person was a double violation. Or something.

Women aren't praised for what we do, mostly -- we are praised for what we look like. And when you look at the variety of men and male body shapes that are presented on TV and in the movies, compared to women -- and the active nature of the men versus the passive nature of women presented -- and this is the toxic soup that all young girls grow up in.... To be reduced like that was just horrifying. I was surprised at my reaction.

Men have their own issues, of course. It is not for nothing that men tend to die sooner than women -- the pressures on them are terrible in their own way and it is literally killing them, in my opinion.

So it doesn't surprise me that you could laugh it off and let it stay laughed off. You are used to seeing yourself as active. While I laughed it off, and then got mired in this crappy sexual objectification that is so toxic.

It's all so ugly.

I'm so proud of your beautiful strong friend. She didn't deserve what happened to her, no woman does, and I know you know that. And dang if she didn't fight back with everything she had. That is how this shite stops. Make the bastards accountable. Right now they aren't.

Great story you told. Really great.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Prison (HBO)

Jerykk says...

Good points, Redsky.

However, there hasn't been nearly enough research on the effects of rehabilitation to claim that it consistently reduces recidivism. You mention Scandinavian countries in particular. How many of those rehabilitated prisoners were guilty of violent crimes? If you want to reduce recidivism, the death penalty will offer guaranteed results.

As for the U.S.'s murder rates, they aren't the highest among first-world countries. Higher than European countries, sure, but Europe is tiny. Russia is more comparable to the size of the U.S. and it has almost double the murder rate. China claims to have a 1.0 but I'd question the reliability of any data provided by that government.

I'm also pretty sure that most criminals recognize the severity of their crimes. If they aren't insane, they'll know that jaywalking will result in a far lesser penalty than murder. What it comes down to is risk versus reward. If breaking the law is the most convenient way of getting what they want and the likelihood of them getting caught is low, they'll break the law. That's rational behavior. It's the reason why people people slow down when they see a cop on the freeway instead of speeding like they would normally do. It's the reason why people won't hesitate to download a pirated movie but would think twice before trying to steal a movie from Best Buy. If someone wants to rob a liquor store and they see a cop inside, they will most likely not rob that particular liquor store. Not all criminals are psychotic murderers. On the contrary, most criminals are perfectly sane and break the law on a regular basis. They just make sure that the risks are low enough so they don't get caught.

Severe penalties mean nothing if they aren't enforced and increasing surveillance increases the likelihood of enforcement. Increasing surveillance wouldn't be cheap but then, rehabilitating criminals isn't cheap either. Getting rid of the prison system entirely and replacing it with efficient executions (nothing overly elaborate like lethal injections) would cut costs dramatically and allow for greatly expanded surveillance and enforcement, in addition to dramatically increasing the risk for any given crime. If the penalty for speeding was death and there were more cops patrolling the roads and freeways, I guarantee 99.9% of drivers would stop speeding. There's no hard data for this, of course, but that's because no country has ever attempted it.

Venezuela currently has over ten times the murder rate of the U.S. It was the first country in the world to abolish the death penalty. Now, the country is riddled with corruption. Laws have no meaning because they are not enforced so criminals do whatever they want without fear of reprisal.

Robbery Fail

modulous says...

I doubt a Swedish Pressbyan (it looks like the one in Central Station) has protective glass shielding the clerk, and the brief snatches of her behind seem to confirm this. It's not a locking door trap - which is why the guys are needed to keep it closed. It's almost unheard of to have that kind of protection in anything other than petrol stations, bookeeper's (betting shop) or off-licences (liquor stores). The most likely explanations include, in his urgency to get out, he didn't consider it. Or he just wanted money, and didn't actually want to commit violence. Or he knew that taking a hostage would result in a much more serious criminal penalty. Given its a train station, there is almost certainly police nearby and the incident is probably being observed on CCTV by at least transport security - so he didn't have a lot of time to get control of a hostage, convince the people blocking the door he would hurt her if they didn't open the door and then to make a getaway.

Oppressed Majority

artician says...

Every male I was around in gradeschool, junior-high, and highschool acted like this. It shaped a very embarrassing portion of my self that was only erased when I reached college and realized it wasn't how people should be if we want everyone to live the life of freedom that we hope to.

I was going to say how no one I know ever went so far as to rape a person, but even that's not true considering the unchaperoned "party" my friend and I had at his house with two girls, where which I left at sunset for dinner because "my parents would get mad at me", and I later learned that the two girls and he got drunk on his parents liquor after I left, and one of them later pressed charges that he'd raped her that night.

I don't say this lightly, it's something I remembered just now, and is clearly a memory I have fought to push out of my mind. It's not a fear of guilt, I bear that very much, as much as it's the first of many encounters a really naive young man had with how terrible sexuality can be between the established genders in our society. I believe this happened when we were in the 6th grade.

I'm very thankful today that I am as pro-equality as I am, and that I never committed any mistakes nearly so heinous as that. That said, I understand the film is a compilation of all the worst-case-scenarios in a woman's day to day life, and you should view it understanding that, but where I come from, and understanding how there are such extremely concentrated pockets of ignorant society along these lines, know that there are very many people out there who act this way.

I got out; passed the "small-town-test", but knowing the adults I knew when I was growing up, and that nearly none of my schoolmates from that era ever moved from home or had any higher education, I know that those who stayed there continue to act that way 20+ years on, so in the end this video is not inaccurate.
