Camp stove generates electricity for USB charging

bmacs27 says...

Also, the claim about CO emission might be correct if you consider the entire life-cycle of getting the fuel to the stove. The gas needed to be extracted, likely purified through a process requiring energy, somehow packaged in materials requiring energy to create and at pressure which would require further energy. Then it needs to be distributed as well. The sticks you just pick up, and before they fell they had a negative carbon footprint.

Handfeeding a Dragonfly

meggymoo says...

I just don't see why she is bothering. The only real point of the dragon fly stage of it's life cycle is to find a mate and do the deed. It's not going to do that with a broken leg. What a tragic waste of ants lives.

Zombie Decomposition (Blog Entry by lucky760)

gorgonheap says...

I would think that zombie would go thorough some kind of life cycle as they go through the 5 stages of decomposition (Fresh, Bloat, Active Decay, Advanced Decay, and Dry Remains) I don't think a zombie outbreak would last too long, it would just be a matter of waiting it out. Unless they are the zombie like things in I Am Legend where people are just sick with a mutated measles virus. That would be a tougher situation to deal with. Of course the repeated singular goal thing might just be a residual of when they were alive, Kinda like how Sean Hannity can't say anything more then two or three exaggerated right wing ideological sentences all day.

FOX explains $4 gas when Bush was president

I'd give my left arm for 4 USD a gallon. Right now we're at 7,57 USD a gallon (1,50 EUR per liter). And that's for diesel, which is subsidized over here. I'm happy i don't need Super (Premium you call it i think), regular isn't sold here anymore.

Yeah, I really have no time for americans complaining about gas prices. Forget a hybrid or a diesel, just buy a small car.

And OT: my main issue with hybrids is their environmental impact. Sure on road, they're a great idea, but not so much once you amortise the energy cost of the life cycle of the vehicle. You want to be environmentally friendly and save money. Buy an oldish car with a small engine.

The Parasitical Brain Hijackers: Not Just in Ants

biochem10 says...

>> ^Boise_Lib:

I've often wondered if there are viruses that do similar things to humans.

Not sure about viruses, but Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that might alter human brain chemistry. In its natural life cycle, toxo induces suicidal behavior in rats in order to make it back to its feline host. Humans are not part of the original life cycle but can function as dead-end hosts if they're around infected cats. Obvious symptoms of toxo infection really only show up in babies, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients, but subtle symptoms (i.e. altered brain chemistry) may manifest in any infected person. I can't recall the title offhand, but there is an article out there where the author suggests that the aggressive behavior of the Egyptians and their deification of cats was due to being heavily infected with toxoplasma.

Scientists are still out on the question.

I've always wondered, what's the difference between the F-22 and the F-35?
They look pretty similar, is it all an internal difference?

The 22 is more of a 15 replacement, a complete all around air superiority plane. The 35 is more of a 16 replacement, nimble, single engine combat fighter/multirole. The 22's life cycle is pretty much done for because of funding...it will never be a true 15 replacement. The 35 will be the bread and butter until the next generation of planes, or so it seems.

Girl throwing live puppies in river

shagen454 says...

This lady obviously does not love the life cycle and needs to work up a positive mindset and be doused with maybe a half eight of mushrooms and somehow without the guidance of others be made to gaze upon the beauty of puppydom. And feel horribly horribly regretful yet positively changed... in a positive way through connective-negative-introspection.

Guild Wars 2 Shows Us How To Sell A Game

teebeenz says...

>> ^MilkmanDan:

I stopped being interested in Guild Wars 2 after I heard (quite some time ago) that they were scrapping the max level of 20. From this video, looks like I need to give it some further looks.
I hate grinding. I hate level systems. I hate when my character at the end of the game is multiple orders of magnitude stronger than at the beginning -- Final Fantasy style (start with 38HP, end the game with 9999HP, yet nothing really changes because the ratios of damage / defense / max health etc. all remain relatively constant).
I've only really been into 2 MMOs. I started with UO at launch and played for about a year, eventually quitting because I hated the open PvP. It took me a long time to decide to give another MMO a shot after that, but I took the bait for Star Wars Galaxies and played from a few days after launch for over 4 years. I hated the leveling process in SWG, but once I had finished it I got to play a nice sandbox-style open world game that suited me very well. Too bad that the life-cycle management of SWG stands as probably the best example of what NOT to do in maintaining an MMO -- I'll never play an SOE game again.
I tried Guild Wars 1 and really liked it, but since I was at the time most active in SWG I never got community connections in Guild Wars that could have had me really hooked.

The max lvl is 80, however like the original GW levels mean virtually nothing. In fact unlike others MMOs where each level takes more XP to gain, GW2 has the same XP required for each. Its more of a simple marker or your progress. If you are lvl 80, and you want to play with a friend of lvl 1, not a problem, GW2 will scale your levels to match.

Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer

Hey, the faster the game gets pirated, the faster I get to finish it and decide if I want to lay down money for it.

DA:O felt like it had a very classical combat system, almost archaic in some respects, except they took out the ridiculous anomalies from previous games like having to rest unnecessarily and just introduced cool downs instead, among other similar fixes. Supposed to have been the spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series.

Anyway about 3 hours into ME2 and so far I'm quite impressed. It might rely on cliches but the main focus much like DA:O is on believable and deep characterization. So far it's doing a great job. Combat also feels somehow better than ME1, although I can't recognize any obvious differences.

Can't really say anything wrong about the graphics and modelling. I mean it's not ground-breaking but there's nothing bad about it. Not to mention comparing an RPG like this say to a much tighter and shorter FPS experience is unfair. With greater swathes of content comes development constraints on other aspects. In the same way that even modern MMORPGs will look downright average compared to single player RPGs, simply because they have even more gamespace still.

Also this generation's consoles are well into their life cycle. Since everything is dominated by console sales, graphics improvements stall. Even then I will be DAMN HAPPY if that kind of limitation results in more effort being devoted to gameplay, originality and plot development.
