The Fifth Estate: 'You Should've Stayed at Home'

Pprt says...

You understand why the cops were there right?

It wasn't to protect you or "silence" your thoughts.
>> ^notarobot:

"Why would this event be any different?"

Because YOU weren't there witnsess the event. Because YOU didn't have your shoulder dislocated by an officer in full riot armour. Because YOU did not have your prosthetic ripped from your leg. Because you were not arrested without any warrant or concern for your civil liberties.

There are a lot of good cops in this world, Pprt. I have a strong belief that the real good cop bad cop ratio is something to the tune of 99:1 but that "one" left over can sometimes give the other 99 an undeserved reputation and THAT is exactly what this ISN't about.
The truth is that when an officer is ordered to do something that makes him feel like he needs to take his name tag off to execute that order (and keep his job) then something is wrong. If there are plain clothes officers able to leap out of the crowd to protect, what? Why were there plain clothes officers among the crowd NOT preventing vandalism of private property and their own police vehicles?
Why?
We know that police are sometimes ordered to commit the very acts forbidden by law. We know that police have broken the law so to twist public perception of otherwise peaceful protests because THEY HAVE PUBLICLY ADMITTED doing so. It is also very likely that an inquiry could reveal similar tactics used during the G20.
What is wrong with this? A group of well trained, capable individuals, sworn to uphold the law and protect the people used against the very people they are trusted to protect. Orders passed down through subterfuge, obfuscated behind veils of lies.
And 99 of them know it's wrong.

Next time you see cops blocking a crime scene or an accident.. go ahead and give them a hard time. Tell them how it's your right to walk right up to a dead body or a smashed car.
No? Why not?
Because you understand that sometimes the police are there for a reason and you respect that. Why would this event be any different?>> ^Yogi:

High Schooler Crushes Fox News On Wisconsin Protests

What's with all the snarling? Put your teeth away please, I was being civil this whole thread.

House legislators were forced to rely on spending cuts to close the shortfall -- estimated at between $15 billion and $27 billion -- because Republican leaders pledged not to raise taxes. They also did not touch the state's projected $9.4 billion rainy day fund, one of the most flush in the nation.

Without even knowing what that "rainy day fund" is actually legally supposed to be used for, I would point out that even if they chose to use all of it to close this year's deficit, there'd still be a $6-18 billion dollar deficit left over.
Must be the result of decades of left-wing liberal "tax & spend" nanny state philosophy in Texas! Maybe it's all the greedy public sector unions! Oh wait, they're a hardcore "right to work" state...
Here's a suggestion. Maybe the common thread amongst the states with big budget shortfalls isn't ideology, but population size? Maybe deficits are a natural consequence of high unemployment, since people without jobs don't pay taxes, and tend to rely more on government benefit programs like unemployment, food stamps, Medicaid, etc.
Maybe part of the problem is that we demand these states all keep balanced budgets, which forces them to either raise taxes, or lay off employees during recessions, both of which just makes the underlying unemployment issue worse.

Government. People ruling other people.

I don't see government as people ruling other people, I see government as people ruling themselves.
And given how many savage compulsive instincts we have left over from caveman days, people NEED to govern themselves. Or else it's just rape and murder.
The truth is, what I perceive as your ideal world, is more people ruling other people than government.
Your ideal world, as it seems to me, I haven't read your book yet, is you saying to other people, "You cannot rape my wife, if you do, I will punish you severely", whereas my idea of government is people forming social contracts with other people to not rape each others wives.
Also, there is no god, enjoy your life.

People ruling themselves is called "self-governance" and that's exactly what I want. You seem to conflate the idea of self-governance with our current statist system with the rich class at the helm which is a ridiculously misguided notion. It's good to know our Prussian-modeled educational indoctrination system is working as expected.
The truth is, what I perceive as your ideal world is the ruling class controlling the poor. Your ideal world, as it seems to me, I haven't read your book yet, is a world where benevolent oligarchs give favors to the ruling class while placating the majority. See, I can condescend to you too.

I knew you'd throw that back at me, haha. I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to condescend. I was just trying to express my uncertainty in my understanding of your views, being that my understanding of your views comes only from these sporadic comments.

Rotationplasty - Medical science does what?

deathcow says...

Between when i was 19 - 24 years old I wrote all the software in a robotic bone lengthening device. It is highly related to techniques like this (and is hinted at in this video... "if the knees dont line up, another procedure is done...") the other procedure is called the Ilizarov technique.

We automated the Ilizarov technique with motors which stretched a "somewhat broken" leg 1,440 times per day, nanometers at a time, adding up to a single millimeter of "stretch" per day. This enables you to grow an inch taller every 25.4 days.

I attended many operations and bolted the motors onto the devices. One guy in Alaska had blown almost his complete tibia/fibula off with a shotgun. The doctors simply brought the foot up to the left over stub of bone, attached the motorized cage and began lengthening the bone again. In about 120 days he had grown his entire missing calf back. (It will never look the same ; ) but it is completely functional.

We also put our device on an Atlanta Falcons player who had a shortened AND rotated foot after a football break. Simple -- break the leg again, put it in a frame, and then lengthen AND rotate the leg by 1mm in each axis daily. This only took a couple weeks compared to the months for the shotgun injury.

I saw them break many bones in the operating room with chisels.

I am sure there are some Youtube videos explaining the "Ilizarov" technique and showing the frames.

Israeli Woman Finds Out BF Is Arabic, Sues Him For Rape

Lawdeedaw says...

>> ^qualm:
tsquire1: "...to compare the situation of a male withholding information to a women with its antipode is to ignore the reality of a patriarchal society where men benefit substantially for gender privilege."
I agree. The imbalance of power between men and women is institutionalized, ie. patriarchy, so that while individually women can be hateful or "sexist," there's no entrenchent, and little to no meaningful empowerment for women to subvert and reverse structural injustice and inequalities. And so it is with racism. A Palestinian can hate Jewish Israelis, but from outside.
In Israel Palestinians are "the other." They have nothing in the way of leverage, so instead there's misery, frustration and endless intractable conflict. So it is that from despair erupts the most existentially strange phenomenon of violence: the suicide bomber.
It's one of those historical ironies that the first suicide bomber in Israel/Palestine was an early zionist.

I have found that women hold most of the power in the Western World. All the jokes are not so funny about how "pussy-whipped" men are when it is a reality for many, many men.

My wife tried breaking me for five years! Five fucking years! You would think she would lose her entitlement issues in the gender race. I am thankful we are now equals. Also, my father was broken by my mother, my brothers by their wives, my wife's family by their husbands... You get the point... All that is left over is a souless slave that works to feed a woman's need to spend or be the bully...
