VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page (Sift Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

On a phone, the new layout looks quite nice right until you get to the bottom, and then the related and suggested vids are quite messy.

Old style (neater list) - http://imgur.com/PkJe43M
New style (messier list) - http://imgur.com/4EBq4cS

You could neaten it up either by making the thumbnails smaller, or by only displaying three instead of five videos in each list. Actually the thumbnails seem quite large even on the desktop version.

As there is no way to mouseover on a phone, could the comment timestamps be made unconditional there (or everywhere)?

What makes me switch back and forth between v6 beta and old style is missing list of voters. I would've said number of views too, but I see that's been added (thanks!).

One usability thing - the way the comment box shrinks just before you want to hit submit means you have to chase the submit button around the page. This doesn't help. Moving the controls above the textbox would fix this, although I'm sure you can think of other ways.

I'd like to see Beggar's Canyon back in the "watch" menu, although I'm also open to only having it and deadpool and no thumbs appear only on the front page. It has been used a bit less lately, but as it was initially one of my favourite starting points I feel the need to stick up for it

@blackfox42 - There was no intention to permanently remove anything really, especially not channels. The biggest thing was to get this new very slimmed down version out there for you to review. If everyone said "Meh, we don't need the channels," then maybe we wouldn't add them back in.

It's important that we hear from as many people as possible what works and doesn't work with the new layout, so to everyone, if your opinion has already been stated (e.g., "I want the channels!") please don't hold back from repeating the sentiment. The more we hear about a common opinion, the more important we know it must be.

Bookmark is currently gone, but that was intended to be put back in. It's actually good that these features are missing initially because with all the feedback I'm starting to conceive of a good way to put some or all of those things back in without turning the page into a mess again.

Yes, some things have been overlooked, so do feel free to mention them, even if someone else already has. (There's a lot to parse through and hearing the same thing multiple times also helps to reinforce the thought of it.)

Fixed the "Just Published" link. Thanks for catching that.

@ChaosEngine - We could filter out any comments with just invocations. Perhaps I'll work on that. Interesting how differently everyone watches videos.

@Zawash - Thanks for the input. It's all helpful.

@eric3579 - I have a good idea how to add things like that back in.

@brycewi19 - We'll keep that in mind.

@oritteropo - Thanks for pointing that out and the details. It was only for posts with no votes at all. Fixed now.

@RFlagg - Will look into delaying the menus from appearing. Doesn't matter if you're breaking ground. Feel free to voice your thoughts so we know if there is more of a concensus about certain issues. Love the idea of showing who voted when hovering over the vote count...

Good point about NSFW being essential. Will add it back soon.

@blahpook - Thanks for catching that. I'll work on a fix.

@Esoog - Thanks for the detailed feedback. Good stuff to consider.

My only issue with the design is the hover comes too quick. I tend to mouse around a lot, and jump tabs while watching videos and even if I am getting ready to tab out for a moment, the hover effect blocking the video sort of irritates. If it pushed the rest of the video down below the hover, that'd be okay, or a slightly longer hover, that'd be good.

Other than the hover effect, I don't mind the layout personally. Sort of a more "Theater mode", which both YouTube and Twitch offer as an option. I'd say perhaps offer this new Theater mode as the default, and if a user sets it to "normal" than allow for that (non-users get a cookie that expires quicker rather than an option setting).

I'm not going to break much new ground with the rest, most of it has been stated and I'm echoing with my own thoughts.

The loss of channels seems odd. Either put it under the submitter or under the description. Same with number of views and video length.

The who voted could be put into the hover effect over the vote counter, again with a small delay.

Perhaps time stamps on the comments.

I'm looking at this via a desktop I should note, with a 1080 screen, so the layout works so far. The vote buttons for me are in a good spot. How this works via mobile I don't know yet.

Doubt - How Deniers Win

@bobknight33

Please tell me what your experience is with the scientific community. Do not waffle or sidestep the issue but answer exactly what the extent of your experience with scientific research is, and if necessary how that positions you to judge scientific material.

Please also provide three examples from three separate (and recent) peer reviewed (and published, i.e. forming part of the scientific argument) scientific research papers from approximately the last 4 years (since 2010) that provides something illogical as a foundation argument or any particular conclusion. (You realise of course that even 3,5,10, 100 out of 10 thousand is meaningless, but i know that you can't even understand the layout of a scientific paper, nevermind find 3 examples of an illogical statement in a scientific paper.... even my professors would struggle with that.)

I'm not going out of my way to be a dick here @bobknight33 .. but if you tried to give people medical advice (chemotherapy is illogical propaganda!) then you would be expected to have an expertise in medicine. So don't run away from your responsibility.

This shouldn't be a difficult challenge for you, being as you are so certain and so correct that the science is illogical propaganda. I've had to accept things that ran completely counter to my intuition, so if climate change science is bull then as soon as you prove it, i'm on board.

So go ahead, explain to me simply and clearly what makes it bullshit science, or you're going to have to admit that you don't even have the first clue what you're talking about (as i strongly suspect).

Believe climate SCIENCE, do not believe what politicians and industry leaders tell you about climate science - ASK A FUCKING SCIENTIST. And most of all - @bobknight33 - it is NOT ok to pretend to understand science and lie to people about it, you deceptive, brain-dead parrot. Well, having said that, at least parrots have redeeming features.

Stunningly real graphics

@newtboy, this is actually running on a fairly low-spec pc (around the same as an xbone or ps4).

But yeah, this is similar to the deus ex video I posted a while back,
*related=http://videosift.com/video/Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Unreal-4-demo

One small area with great attention paid to lighting and detail with no mechanics or animation.

@jmd, agreed the trees weren't great, but not all games are about open worlds and dynamic events. Look at COD. Very linear, incredibly scripted.

The fundamental problem with AAA games is the cost to create content. I think we're going to ultimately see some blend of procedural and hand created content as the way forward, where the designers build a layout for gameplay and a procedural engine fleshes out the visual details.

Making The Sift more user friendly (Sift Talk Post)

Warmth- says...

Hi, I'm a long time lurker. I happened to see an interesting 'Videosift lounge' -link in the top of the page yesterday, clicked it, and found out that the site has a chat lounge, which is quite nice!

I wound up chatting with @eric3579, and found out that the chat had been enabled for everyone just a few months ago. We got to talking about how hard it can be for a first time user to find out more information about what VideoSift is, and how it actually works.

I had seen this thread a couple of weeks ago, when I first time tried to find out some extra info on the site. I skimmed @Zawash's great post through for some info (on what power points can be used for etc.) - I didn't find the link to the FAQ then, I found the FAQ-link just today.. as it never occured to me to look for the link at the very bottom of the page, but from the top menu navigation bar instead.

I sketched that above linked image as we chatted, and now I just noticed that @dotdude had suggested just that idea already above. The sketch's question mark and font color is not as cool as the real design is, but in anycase, I too think that something of that sort would be more noticeable/clear place for FAQ/Help for the new people?

Do you guys think that to make this happen, we could perhaps cut the task in to two? One for the mighty Admins, and one for the helpful, interested parties in this talk thread? Admins would create cool graphics and code the link for the help menu, and the layout views for a sectioned help text, and then another task for all the long time pro sifters, in creating all that text for those help sections? A bit like @Zawash has done here?

Could that work be done in anonymous google document (does require Google-account (I think, maybe, note sure if it even requires that), but editing and commenting on the document doesn't reveal identity in any case)?

If there are helpful and knowledgeable people, perhaps this document could be used for the work of creating a good help section and updated FAQ?

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hB-bGN9QJ0Wgu7_-jH22eHG3HYJ9_Oj4hG9EWsorNgE/edit?usp=sharing

I'm going to currently just copy all the material from the FAQ in there, and edit it to look nice and clear, and then separate 'Help/instructions' sort of stuff in to another section, and leave only actual basic Questions in the FAQ-section. Anyone's free to help and contribute! And if you come up with a better way of organizing everything, or want to write a completely new section, just use the document and do it!

I'm a total newb when it comes to anything related to actually using this site and its features (only submitted a couple of videos), so I think I'm underqualified for doing this by myself, so I sure hope you guys could help!

Just hop on in to the document and start doing useful stuff when ever!
Don't worry about accidentally doing anything, there's a complete undo feature in Google Docs, and each edit revision is saved as its own version, so if someone decides to vandalize (I heavily doubt anyone would do such a thing!) this, I can get the last good version back, and then put on restrictions on to who can edit etc. But, I'll do those things only if there is a need for that, let's keep the document super easily accessible and commentable for now!

Thanks!

(BTW. I really appreciate all the effort of the Admins and sifters have put in to the site over the years! I believe that there's quite a few other people besides me, who mostly just lurk around, and do not contribute much to the site actively.
That reluctance to participate might of course be due to us lurkers being like we are, but also it could heavily be related to the way in which it's a bit hard to find out about how stuff works currently..)

Atheist professor converts to Christianity

grinter says...

Shiny, from the context in which Volump used the quote, it really seems that he did understand what Lumbsten was saying, and was accurately pointing out that it is incorrect, or at least misleading. The human eye has a pretty significant blind spot as the result of the nervous connections having to pass through the layer of photoreceptors. While there are some who argue that the layout of the vertebrate eye helps to cope with damage cause by UV radiation, it doesn't make sense to argue that it functions this way because it is 'designed' for use out of water. The eyes of fishes have the same design (...extremely good evidence for evolutionary relatedness), and fish, of course, usually use their eyes underwater.
A stronger argument suggesting an adaptive trade-off between the costs of having nervous connections in front of the photoreceptors and some other benefits of this anatomy would be that the arrangement of the vertebrate eye allows for the photoreceptors to be closer to their blood supply in the choriod.

shinyblurry said:

You've quoted that without understanding what he is talking about, or what the controversy actually is. Evolutionists suppose that the human eye is poorly designed because of a layer of nerve fibers in front of the eye. They base this partly on the fact that the octopus, whose eyes have a similar design to ours, have the same nerve fibers located in the back of the eye. They say the nerve fibers in front impair our vision in comparison, and perhaps they might a little(dont know if they do or not), but it is for a tradeoff. The truth that is missing from the discussion is that the nerve fibers in front have a purpose, which is to block damaging radiation that the octopus isn't exposed to because it is underwater. That is why the octopus can have the nerve fibers in the back of the eye and we have them in front.

What is your proof that he wasn't an atheist? Where did you read that he was kicked out of the University? I wouldn't be surprised that he was kicked out of the University after he converted, but I've never read that he was kicked out.

South Park - Xbox One vs PS4

RFlagg says...

I get the idea that people want their friends on the same system, so they can play with/against one another. But the degree all sides get worked up is just odd. It's one of those cases of can't we just agree to disagree, but all sides get nearly evangelical.

My take... I prefer the 360 controller to the PS3 controller. I like the weight, the button and stick placements... just the whole feel is better, for me, at least for most games. Some 3rd person games benifit from the PS3 layout a bit better, but for shooters and platformers I think the 360 layout is better. Most of the exclusive titles next Gen are leaning me to the One, but most are cross platform, so that has little influence. For the current generation, I found the PS3 to be a far superior media machine, beyond the Blu-ray support, I think it does Netflix better (even discounting the poor UI the XBox had prior to the upcoming unified interface), which might be an issue with my router and it working better with the PS3 than the XBox, but even for connecting to my Windows PC and PlayOn (a program on my PC that allows me to use Hulu on the TV without Hulu Plus, and allows me to play more media types from my PC on the TV), it was better. However, the multiplayer on XBox seemed better, despite the fee... which gets me to a rub against the One, I wish Microsoft would remove the Gold requirement to access video services like Netflix, YouTube and the like. Leave the Gold requirement for multiplayer gaming, but video services should be broke off.

That said, most of my gaming is PC side... though for a game like Battlefield 4 or Titanfall I prefer a console... do in part to my lower end PC... yeah, the graphics on those games would look better (if my PC was a bit more modern), but I don't know, something about those style games makes me like the experience on the console better... same with Assassins Creed 4... actually, many console type games... but Steam and I love one another...

Return of Mobile VideoSift (Sift Talk Post)

oritteropo says...

It's very nice to be able to access the full site on a mobile device again... the teensy little up/down vote buttons on comments were not always easy targets.

In terms of load time, I think it's an improvement. The prior mobile single column layout was very slow to load, and would reset back to your starting position three or four times on the way through... which the newly accessible full site doesn't do.

I always loved the look of the 4.2 mobile site, too.

Thanks @lucky760

What your phone’s buttons layout could have looked like

ChaosEngine says...

Me too, although I think I'd actually prefer the numeric keypad layout.

Presumably, someone has written an android app that allows you to change that....

AeroMechanical said:

It actually kind of annoys me that phones are different than numeric keypads. I have no real preference for one over the other, but it means in both cases if I make the mistake of thinking about where the numbers are rather than just hitting the right ones, it takes me a few moments to figure it out.
