Defusing land mines in Cambodia (SCARY)

Great sift! I've never seen anything like that before. Now, on to find the assholes who made those and sold them.

That'd be us - "mines found in Cambodia have been manufactured in the US, China, Vietnam, the former USSR and East Germany, the former Czechoslovakia, India, Chile, South and North Korea, Thailand, Iran, Iraq, South Africa, Bulgaria, the former Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Poland." - article

As of 2007, a total of 158 nations have agreed to [ban landmines]. Thirty-seven countries have not agreed to the ban, including China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia and the United States.

We deserve a swift kick to the nuts!

How does Jimmy Carr feel about Michael Jackson's death?

bleedingsnowman says...

^ I think that's most of the way true. I think he was a pedo bastard and a musical genius, a really strange, messed-up maniac in all, but he could really fucking dance and write a beat.

Also, ponceleon, never spite a rich person for being a philanthropist. It's backwards and makes you sound like a brat. If Diana has the means to jet off to where ever the fuck she's going to talk about landmines, and still look good, then good for her and good for the cause. Sadly her position and glamor could raise awareness more than the combined shouts of every inhabitant of every warzone she visited. Why spite her for attempting to make atrocities known? Or I guess it might suit her better to just lounge in her castle and eat peeled grapes all day. Yeah I'd much rather her do that. They're aren't enough Paris Hilton's in the world.

Quickest way to defuse a car bomb in Iraq

RedSky says...

When god gives you lemons .... ehhh ... not sure where this is going, but you should drive over a car bomb with a tank.

>> ^AeroMechanical:
Those tanks are pretty tough, specifically designed to withstand landmines. All the same, it seems like it would be easier to just detonate it with some small explosives or something from a safe distance. If there are a lot of homes nearby or something though, I suppose the tank method would absorb a lot of the blast. I would think they would move the vehicle filming it further away and that the gunner (or commander, or whoever that guy on top is) would have buttoned up. Or was this not intentional?

You can tell by the debris from the explosion that they're sitting behind a window, which I'm guessing is designed to be bulletproof and sturdy enough to not shudder from a blast like that.

The cost of an empire - Obama increases military spending

quantumushroom says...

I wish the military was as much an empire as the left claims it is. Though it's hardly conquest, it would be refreshing to see tanks and landmines placed on the Southern US border and seizing enough Mexican oil to pay for all the damages illegals cause as well as their deportation.

We could take over Cuba in a week and make the whole thing a US missile base/casino.

Iraqis would finally pay for their freedom--a freedom they would never have won for themselves--in oil reserves.

The UN would be moved to Haiti or the Arctic.

U.N. Landmine Removal Commercial

Sniper007 says...

They might as well have said that "landmines can costs as little as $0.01 to purchase." If they were trying to come up with some reasonable reliable numbers, $0.80 was about 300% off the mark according to most reports posted here. Also, they video description says that it costs "about $1,000 to TRAIN SOMEONE to remove them." It doesn't say that it costs $1,000 to remove ONE.

And why does it cost $1,000? Who is that money going to? The UN? Since when did they become the ones who are responsible to remove land mines from the face of the earth?

Also, if I owned some property that could at all have any probability of containing land mines, I would freaking teach myself how to remove them. Then the only cost would be in time and effort to scour the land (dependent upon how much land I owned).

Oh, and the landmine isn't the criminal. It's the MAN who PLANTED the landmine, and ONLY insofar as he planted it in such a way as to harm someone who did not deserve it.

The whole thing just seems so over dramatized. How is there an untripped mine on a football field? I don't mind PSA's of this nature, but I don't like my heart strings being forced in a particular direction from some crappy over dramitasation about an event that would never happen. People get hit with mines in 3rd world countries, I get it, I don't need to see some soccer moms screaming over their child's legs getting blow off on the same tract of land that gets moved ever week. It is the advertising equivalent of a cry track. Don't tell me how to feel, just tell me what the problem is and I will decide that.

That's the whole point - the average person can't imagine what it's like to lose a kid to a landmine at random and that's what happens in the 3rd world - it's usually playing kids that randomly just blow up. That wasn't dramatized at all.

IF ANYTHING they took it easy. Try reading about what Boucing Betty landmines do. All the girls on the field would have been killed and most of the parents.
