Maher exposes Republicans Secret Rules

radx says...

Between wars of aggression (Iraq, Afghanistan) and the violation of national sovereignty (Pakistan, Libya, Syria, Jemen, Somalia), the running of gulags (Gitmo, Baghram) and torture facilities (airport in Mogadishu), the NDAA and the war on whistleblowers on the one hand and the entire corporate corruption (too big to fail/jail in particular) on the other hand, there's plenty of reason to take a good look at what the latest administrations have been responsible for.

But hey, Benghazi and the IRS are the real scandals, right?

Not Thomas Drake, John Kiriakou and Bradley Manning or Anwar al-Awlaki, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. Certainly not HSBC or Gitmo. And neither nightly JSOC raids nor cruise missile attacks, much less torture and kidnapping.

Star Trek Into Darkness - International Trailer

Yes He is Khan, according to IMDB that is rumored but I've read elsewhere that it is confirmed. I have no idea how that will be written into the reboot. So Sherlock is Khan, Dr. Watson is Bilbo Baggins. What's next?

I still think he's Khan. For me, it came from the line "I'm better than you." At what? "At everything." Reminds me of Monteblanc's line of "My is a greater intelligence."

Isn't Alice also playing the doctor who creates the genesis project?

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - Official Teaser Trailer

I'm not expecting anything good out of this one. I mean, I didn't care for Star Trek (2009) either, but at least that one had some of the elements of what Star Trek was about. This looks like a run of the mill comic-book action movie.
I remember when Star Trek was about exploration, philosophy, politics, and discovery. Now it's become something much more mundane, and that's kind of sad, not just on the part of Hollywood, but also on the part of the general public, who can't seem to appreciate the deeper things nowadays.

Also, just because it's a movie doesn't mean you need to focus on some villain on a quest for vengeance all the time. Anyone remember Star Trek VI? I actually consider that to be the best of the Star Trek movies, with its deconstruction of the collapse of communism and how it affected those who lived in that era. Sure it wasn't as tight as Star Trek II, but it had a much greater impact.

Besides, whenever they try to do an amazing, new villain to rival Khan, they always forget to make the villain compelling and interesting. Khan had this advantage because of his background in Space Seed, whereas villains like Shinzon and Nero are bland and undeveloped. (Well, at least effort was made with Shinzon, but they failed to make him a compelling, sympathetic villain. Nero wasn't supposed to upstage the origin story of the crew, but in that case, was he really needed?)

Anyway, I've been kind of ranting about this with friends lately, and I guess that's spilled over to VS now. But that's my position, and I stand by it.

Needs a poll to vote on Khan or Gary Mitchell or somebody new... I rather liked the Gary Mitchell guess, but as Dag said we are in an alternative history so don't need to use classic villains.

NYC Restaurant Sells Parking Spots: Strong Arming Residents

Dude how hard is it to follow this guy and hit him in the back of the legs with a baseball bat. Yeah it's wrong to commit violence on people, it is absolutely wrong. That is exactly what happens when cops don't do their job and stop this bastard from extorting people. I can't believe you put up with this for 2 and a half years without making threats or following through with them on your own. Heck even a warning brick through the window would force the cops to at least come around there and have more of a presence, thus stopping this practice.

Look we're not as evolved as we would like to believe, the level of morality is no greater than it was when Genghis Khan was about. Step the fuck up, if you don't want to hurt anyone fine but you should do something if the police don't step up.

101 Great Movie Villains

Hang on... just a minute there! Tyler Durden was a villain?
And Roy Batty?
And Vincent and Jules? Ok, they weren't good guys, but they certainly weren't the villains.
Also, if we have to have a villainous Disney cartoon cat, I see your Scar and raise you Shere Khan.

I think Tyler became a villain, it's sort of the best villain because it's where internal conflicts beat on eachother for a time and then one wins out. Very interesting to think of that movie in terms of them actually being two people instead of what it ended up being. Imagine Tyler was his friend that slowly went insane and controlling until you had to eventually push the big red button and stop the madness.

Although I have to say me personally, I was all for Tyler. His last stand was certainly not hurting anyone and it was a great idea, which is why I suppose it wasn't a thing when it happened to go down anyways, it was a fitting climax. Jack though was reacting because the situation had gotten out of control and he could predict where it would lead. He didn't trust Tyler, or himself really. Pretty cool.

I quite liked these guys, too - King Khan & The Shrines, Khan is a Berlin based Canadian so it's a German band. Obviously. I'm sure you could tell... even if I had trouble picking it ;

Never would have guessed it. Seriously German accent can be very easy to confuse with french, scandinavian or even russian. Not the "typical" accent. Vere it zounds laik zey arr speeking tscherman aktschually. But the "hard" pronounciation of some words.
