New Winter Sport: Snow Swimming

Sagemind says...

Meanwhile in the real world...

Canada's first ice swimmer
His name is Paul Duffield and he became Canada’s first Ice Swimmer when he completed a one-mile swim at the Gellatley Bay Aquatic Park on Okanagan Lake.

Emerging from the lake triumphant but cold, he quickly began toweling off as his wife and friends tried to warm him up and keep the blood circulating.

The rules stipulate that the swim must be completed in water with a temperature colder than five degrees Celsius, and the swimmer can only wear a cap and suit (no wetsuit).

(an honour held by only 25 other swimmers worldwide. )

What to do with all that Canadian Snow...

Sagemind says...

I 'am' from Western Canada.
In Kelowna, they use this method to clear all the snow from the downtown areas. I've also seen this method used in Kamloops, Quesnel and as for north as Prince George. I also know for a fact that this method is used in the Lower mainland (aka Vancouver) in many areas.
I know snow melts fast right downtown Vancouver, but in the outlaying areas and on the hills where snow doesn't melt so fast, this is the best choice in snow removal since they can't just push the snow up on sidewalks in downtown areas.

Hmm, well in Western Canada we have a different approach. In Calgary they just ignore it, and here in Vancouver we just huddle up in our warm jammies sipping cocoa until it goes away.

Not really. The whole west coast has been getting tons of rain for most of June and some of July. I am on vacation this month and we have been going through BC and Washington state. We missed most of the rains of June, but we have seen many highway clearing operations dealing with mudslides.

Permafrost is way up north. This place is east of the Kelowna area, where it has been 28-38 degrees C when we were there, so it was pretty damn hot. Not any permafrost there. :

Ah ha!

Just like a geographically challenged American to not know this.

Although record rains may be related as further climate crisis.

Strombo is definitely one of the best interviewers on the planet right now. If you haven't seen it already, I would recommend you watch his interview with Bono. Bono ends up telling him, "George, I'm a fan."

I first heard him on The Lizard, a radio station in Kelowna, BC, but became a big fan once he moved to Much Music and he just keeps getting better.>> ^notarobot:

George Strombolopolous has done a lot of wonderful interviews. I still remember him on Much Music. 1sttube

Where does this show air? I've never seen it before--I like it.
[Edit] I guess I should watch the whole thing before asking questions about it. So this is on CBC?

Actualy Silkscreening is a type of printmaking. It's something I've been doing for 25 years Both artisticly on paper and commercialy on T-shirts.

As for, Textiles, no, I've never really had a chance to explore that area at all. Like interior design, it's a whole other area of the arts.

In reply to this comment by rottenseed:
ooooooo! Did you do textiles? I never knew what textile was in terms of art until I went up to San Fran a month or 2 ago and saw some of the most beautiful work I've ever seen.

Its just a guess because you mentioned "silkscreening"

FOX's Shep Smith: Was that Canadian Health Care Story Fair?

Sagemind says...

Well, it can be a bit convoluted but:

1). Yes, if the waiting list is too long, we can go to another hospital. My son needed his tonsils and adenoids removed and the wait list was a year (in Prince George). So we just called up a specialist in Kelowna, and boom he was in, within a week.

2). There are some private clinics that operate outside the government system and work on a pay per use system. The average person doesn't use them, but they are there for who can afford it.

3). At my last job, we had a special broker who handled all of our medical claims. If it meant that we could end up missing work and costing the company money, it was their job to expedite the paperwork and bump us to the front of the list. We got medical attention right away. Not everyone has this but in that case, it was to the benefit of my employer to bare the costs of this agency instead of paying sick pay for us to wait on a waiting list.

4). Also, hospitals, generally, try to be fair, when I had my ACL replaced, the surgeon, himself expedited my surgery date, because I was in danger of re-injuring and causing more damage if I waited too long. The hospital emergency rooms that I know of are working on a two tear level to speed up wait times. (those that need a bed and those that don't. Also, within those groups, they work with a triage mentality where, those that can be patched up quickly, or the very serious will get attention first. The less people waiting the better.

I think a lot of people imagine us standing in hospital line-ups for months, dying out in the cold. That's just not true. Yes, there can be wait lists when the jobs out-man the doctors, but for the most part, if there were more doctors and more equipment, we wouldn't be waiting so long. In Quesnel, where I lived a year ago, the town started their own fundraiser and bought their own MRI Machine, because the government wasn't. Now they have one and the wait times went from traveling out of town to making the appt.

>> ^alizarin:
Question for Canadian sifters:
In Canada if you don't want to wait you can go to another area where there's a shorter waiting list correct (next town over or whatever)? The only reason to go to the US is if what you want is just a waste of money that won't do you any good no?
