How Much Do You REALLY Know About Autism?

ulysses1904 says...

You may be right, no harm done. Other than me rolling my eyes because yet another person is suffering from “syndrome-itis”, and now they have a $10 word that magically elevates, explains and excuses their traits. It just strikes me as shallow and pretentious as someone who gets a Kanji tattoo without knowing shit about the culture.

Then again it may just me the Gemini in me. haha

I hear ya. Similar thing with people who proudly announce they are OCD because they clean up.

but... is it hurting anybody? Is it such a bad thing that people apparently seek some sort of commonality with those on the spectrum where previously they might have tried to distance themselves from any comparison? That isn't rhetorical btw. I genuinely don't know whether that kind of appropriation is just annoying, or damaging, or even perhaps beneficial.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that. I still can't rerad the text but I'll try to at least lable it's language of origin. My brother-in-law is Chineese and both his kids have learned to read and write in Chinese (They are primarily english speaking). It looks so complicated when I watch them doing their workbooks. They are lucky though, that's a skill that will open many doors for them...

I have to say..., I personally wouldn't know the difference between Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Kanji, Tagalog or other similar texts - I can't read them and I admit wouldn't know one from another - so the text overlays, to me, just says "Not English, definitely Asian" - I hope that isn't offensive, it's just fact!
>> ^mentality:
Yeah seriously, you'd think the chinese subtitles overlaying the original korean text would tip him off. -1 (if only) for arr asian rook arike.

Quick and dirty guide to telling Asian characters apart:

(*note: Kanji = chinese characters used in Japanese.)
Chinese: really complicated looking with lots of strokes.
Japanese: more simple looking with fewer strokes
Korean: also simple looking but looks more regular and geometrical with lots of little circles. The little circles are uniquely korean.

Facebook as the Afterlife (Blog Entry by dag)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

The only gaps are where I've lived in non english speaking countries like Japan and Spain.

It's much harder to find Japanese people on Facebook for me, because I often don't know the characters for their kanji names - and if I use romaji it brings back thousands of matches.

Also don't think the take up of Facebook is that high in continental Europe.

How to Learn Binary In 60 Seconds

Sagemind says...

The strangest part of this video is I was just trying to figure this out today...
I was thinking I would get a new personal license plate with binary numbers on it.
Though, I was thinking I needed to know what the binary numbers meant.

Sort of like someone getting a Kanji Script tattoo and finding out later is means idiot or something.

So, OK I totally understand the numbers now and that works for me...
(and I doubt it is this easy in every instance).
It is sort of like when I had to learn Hexadecimals..

All I need to do now is get my wife to agree...
(on the license plate that is.)

Girl Cannot Handle Getting A Tiny Tattoo! (Fail!)

thinker247 says...

I'm just glad I won't end up being a soccer mom or a business executive, so I don't need to worry about what my tattoos will look like in 30 years. And I understood the implications of what I was doing when I had the tattoos done.

I have three Kanji symbols, but I purposely had them slanted so they don't mean anything. No Britney worries for me.

Tiger evolution ends

According to one YouTube commenter, the message at the end reads "don't let this be the end". I can't read kanji, so I can't verify that, but it sounds plausible.

It's not kanji.

Kanji is what a Japanese person calls imported Chinese logograms. Chinese people would not call a Chinese character kanji and neither should you... simply because that word is Japanese.

Furthermore, even if one could "read kanji", the characters in the video above would be meaningless, as the logographic symbolism often morphed.

'Voices' by Yoko Kanno

Pretty mediocre translation, a few parts seem pretty fudged, but I guess you can get a general idea of the song. If I had the kanji, I'd make a better translation if somebody wanted it.

I love this song.

Google Gtalk Translation: Less than Perfect (Blog Entry by dag)

MINK says...

i dunno guys, i am pretty damn impressed. consider the fact that japanese and english are completely different languages, and the fact that english is so fucked up it is difficult to translate even if you are a human (my girl is at degree level and still struggles with the idioms and ridiculous exceptions and constructions).

Compared to just getting a load of kanji, i think this was highly understandable!!

ok, i couldn't renegotiate the kyoto protocols with this shit, but chatting to a friend and saying a clumsy "hello!" is a big big step up from saying nothing at all.

Consider it took me 2 years to get this good at lithuanian, i think this bot is pretty cool. Hope it's possible to make it better, but anyway, a good start.

Cat Tape Tricks

pho3n1x says...

i also agree that this is not cruelty. it's not even abuse, per se. not to mention that it's packing tape... i think... it looks too glossy to be masking tape, but either way... swampgirl is right... take your pet to the groomers and watch... suddenly it's not so cute anymore seeing fluffy get aggressively brushed, while being pinned down with thick gloved hands. cats will most DEFINITELY let you know if they're pissed off, injured, etc.

i'm a cat-lover, so take it all for what it's worth, but seriously guys... it's not like they're using thumbtacks on the kitty...

oh, and btw, the whole laughing at a dog's broken leg... not even applicable. apples and oranges may both be fruits, but you're still trying to compare... apples and oranges...

plus, the japanese (assuming here, cause i can't tell the diff between the kanji's, or if they're even all called kanji's.) are kind of...... well, it's a different culture over there... not knocking them, mind you... i'd move to tokyo tomorrow if i could afford to do so, because i'm fascinated with the culture... we need a visit from PM to translate this, if it is, in fact, japanese.
