Frostbitten hand gets Drained. (Graphic!)

bamdrew says...

oooph... thats pretty bad. Reminds me of a large poison ivy blister I had on my shin as a kid.

That is gonna be a lot of nerve damage, but at least its not titled 'removal of necrotic fingers after frostbite'.

This teacher has a flawless cheating strategy...

longde says...

That's great, definitely confirms Penn's great reputation in engineering. What I have seen in a big state school and an Ivy League is that most cheaters get away with it, even if caught.>> ^bobknight33:

Years ago wile at Penn State a fellow Engineering freshman got caught cheating. They kicked his ass out that very day.
I never saw the point in cheating. You just cheating your self.
Stealing from the company, that's a different story. That's a wealth enhancement system that I can get behind.

For instance, did you know that the act which established the public school system in this country is called "The Old Deluder Satan Act"?

Did you know the Massachusetts General School Law of 1647 (aka The Old Deluder Satan Law) was passed in 1647, almost 130 years before the Declaration of Independence and over 140 years before the ratification of the Constitution?
There was no "this country" back then. It was merely a British colony.

I did, that's why I said never mind.

For better or worse, finally a republican candidate who wants to challenge the status quo.

It's amazing he's even allowed to be nominated.

Let me get this straight, Dr. Paul.

You want to close all the military bases, end the wars, hobble the defense contractors, slash the budget to nothing, fire all the federal employees nation wide, then hold to a sort of good neighbor policy in terms of pollution and regulatory abuse in the Laissez faire right wing utopia you unleash on the world for four or more years.

A crack-pot Texas gynecologist who isn't Ivy League, and doesn't carry a Skull and Bones card in his wallet.

I was thinking that said something positive about America until I remember the last Republican vice presidential nomination.

Anyone who is a member the Republican party for any semblance of ideals and philosophy will vote for Ron Paul. The rest of them just like country music, kevin costner movies, flashy advertisements and anything else that doesn't require their concentration for more than five minutes.

Bill Nye Explaining Science on Fox is "Confusing Viewers"

BicycleRepairMan says...

The point about global warming is that all the available evidence shows that:
1. It is happening
2. It is man-made.

Why is that a problem? well, because we dont know what the consequences could be, we dont know how to stop the rising temperature or if theres a limit or if or when we can reverse the trend.

All of the above could happen, or it might not, some of it may not be due to GW and some of it may be. The fact is that we are messing with earths ecosystem, which is the very reason we are here in the first place. We grew up and evolved as a species on this planet, under these conditions, how will a rapid(geologically rapid 100-200 years) change in climate affect us as a species? how will it affect millions of other species? How will it affect weather? viruses? diseases? deserts? forests?

We don't know

Thats the point. some of the above are possible consequences of global warming*.

*or some denialist pulled it out of their ass and put it on the web so that other denialists could impress us all with their extensive lists.

Real Exorcism caught on tape

shinyblurry says...

Your whole belabored explanation is basically saying she is acting..you can go on kidding yourself if you like, but that isn't acting. I know for a fact that this does happen, and is actually very common; I've witnessed it personally. You *have* to believe it isn't real, because if it was it would mean that everything you know is wrong. It's impossible for your ego to accept that, even when the evidence is right in front of you.

>> ^Ryjkyj:
>> ^shinyblurry:
Lies? Does that girl seem like she's acting to you? Why would someone start screaming bloody murder when they are doused with Holy water, or start shouting about the antichrist? Give me a break..this is real.

Geez, where to start? There are so many reasons why someone doused with holy water would scream bloody murder. The first and foremost to my mind being that they want to convince someone that they've been possessed by the devil. But this reason is a little misleading, because there are so many reasons why someone would want to convince other people that they are possessed. Could it be that this girl is from a controlling family? Perhaps she's not doing that well at something in life (which could include thousands of reasons), and wants to convince people that she's not living up to their expectations because of a reason that is completely beyond her control?
Or maybe she did something bad and can't reconcile or forgive herself (there's another few thousand possibilities right there at least). Maybe she needs a reason to convince herself that she didn't actually do anything wrong so she's trying to blame it on a demon.
Perhaps it could be that people don't like it when other people tie them down and do things to them against their will. Even if it's something that's not usually a "big deal".
Could it be that all this is brought on because she actually believes that she's possessed by the devil? Well, I guess that could be one possibility out of millions. But if you look at the history of mental health treatment, you'll find that people convince themselves that all sorts of things are real. Some people even break out in rashes when they are told that they've been exposed to poison ivy. But just because they have a rash, doesn't mean that it's not entirely in their own mind.

Is discrimination against Asian Americans in college admissions good or bad? (User Poll by chilaxe)

longde says...

It's a complicated issue that can't be summed up in one statement "bad to discriminate".

The linked article doesn't build a convincing case at any rate. California's asian population is huge relative to other states. I lived in a town that was 50% chinese. So, you would expect asian-americans to make up a sizable percentage of admission candidates to california's colleges and universities. Elite people from all walks of life apply to Harvard and the other Ivies. What percentage of asian americans are applying to those schools relative to the other groups?

Re: The kid that had the GPA, test scores, and 7 or so AP credits, and didn't get in, I would say that there is not enough information to understand if he deserved to go or not. Community service? Extra-curricular activities? What about his essay and story? Is this guy some egghead loner? Who wants to go to college with someone who is not well rounded? In addition, did his high school inflate grades? Did he hail from a rich family who could afford tutors to raise his test scores? Lot's of unanswered questions.

As someone who has sat on an admission committee for an Ivy League graduate business school, a perfect GPA and GMAT would not cut it. Not the same as undergrad, but I imagine that there is less fixation on scores as well.

GPA and standardized test scores should obviously be huge factors in admissions, but certainly not the only factors. Also, any smart student would apply to several colleges. Noone should feel entitled to get into any college; admission is not a right.

To echo a sentiment above, I have often felt that colleges should matriculate anyone who wants to go who can do the work. Graduation should be the gate, not admission.

The Cramps - Can your pussy do the dog? feat. Bettie Page

harpom says...

There was a club in Hamilton Ontario called "New York New York". On there opening night they booked the Cramps. They had no idea what type of band they were. Things started to get a little rowdy into the second or third song. A patron jumped on stage and was punched in the face by the bouncer.
Poison Ivy cracked him (the bouncer) in the back of the head with her base. The blow split his head open. The place went wild. The place was torn to shit and the show was stopped.
I loved the Cramps and they were great live. R.I.P. Lux.
