As someone who was receiving treatment for serious, clinical depression for two years and was rendered genuinely pyschologically non-functional, I completely agree with Gervais.

"Snap out of it" isn't the gist of what Gervais is saying here, but rather that celebrities are fucknuts. "Depression" is not synonymous with "feeling a bit under the rain this week, I might as well milk a few hundred K out of an exclusive interview with Who Gives a Fuck Daily". Depression is a serious issue that's trivialized by these cocklords whose only life interest is their own vapid, superficial prosperity, clamoring for attention and publicity in whatever forms they can find.

I'm not denying that some "celebrities" might well be under the influence of deep depression but, at the same time, my sympathy melts away right around the point that they start publishing books and giving interviews. That's the problem with attention-seekers - they'll use anything in their life as arsenal to get more people to look at them.

Every homeless person I know is a smoker. Usually they bum em off people but occasionally they steal or purchase them with change they also bum off people. If you get an educated person with more motivation, this situation will likely NOT occur. These are uneducated, unmotivated kids who have picked up a lot of habits (like smoking), are usually mentally f'ed by the parents that neglected or beat them, and don't know any better. Richie Rich gave up his riches, made a fishing pole, learned to fish, caught fish and remade all his millions with a fishing company. He was educated and motivated. Of course he was also a comic book character. If only life were that simple.

I was a firm believer in aliens... impossible, thought i, that in the infinite reaches of space, we are the only life forms to exist. Surely these UFO sightings must have a genuine root.

Then i realised that time is also a factor. Yes, space may be on the magnitude of the infinite, but the furthest objects from us in space may as well be in our imagination, or a different dimension; they're intangible to us. We'll never see it, we'll never reach it.

So then the question is limited, what are the odds of us being the only sentient life form within an area of space around us, existing at the same point in time as us?

And even then it's worse - let's say you recieve a set of prime number pulses that were broadcasted by another species, how long did they take to get to us? A thousand years? 2? 3? Did they live long enough for us to recieve it? Will they live long enough to recieve a reply? Will we?

That's why i love astronomy. It's amazing, mind blowing.

Anyone who does a good job of telling the shitty parts of "the system" to fuck off, is OK in my book.

Obviously, dont steal, don't kill, don't rape etc. But IMO what you do with your life outside of that is OK with me. Whether its legal or not, I personally don't give one shit about what a lot of old racist bigots with white hair think I should or shouldn't be able to do with my one and only life.

I lean towards a traditional Japanese belief system.

What does this mean? I try to stay neutral on all ideas, I do not waste my time praying to a god, I try to live frugally, I try to do every thing to the best of my abilities, and most of all I try not to get worked up over any thing, including near miss accidents (IE car accidents, hit and runs). We say these things almost happened, in my belief they did not happen.

On the other hand, it dominates the way I defend myself, I do not defend from a defensive stance I defend from an attacking stance, martially and figuratively always on the attack.

How do I feel about death? I feel nothing, except the occasional emotion that comes from seeing what may be left behind.

How did I come to this belief? I learned that god does not exist, but only in our minds. That hate, love, greed, wealth, corruption, and envy, all of these are human constructs created by the environment in which we live.

There is only life and death.

Believing we're the only life in the universe when there are [cue Sagan] billion and billions of stars even in our own galaxy is the kind of self-centred delusion we excel at as a species.

I am not taking a stance on religion here, but I do think that if this is the one and only life I have, I would not waste any minute or any second of it arguing with people about things we are never going to agree on...
