33-Ft-Long Whale Carcass In English Field a Mile Inland

ponceleon says...

I'm not sure the description is accurate about how far inland it is. In the first shot, you clearly see what looks like the ocean just a few hundred yards away...

As for how it got there, well, if the internet has taught me anything: I don't understand how this happened, therefore either Jesus or aliens are involved.

or perhaps the tide coming in that far isn't that odd an occurrence for this location

New Amazing Dashcam Footage of 3.11 Tsunami

SDGundamX says...

EXTREMELY ROUGH TRANSLATION PART 4 (FINAL)

6:68~7:33

[NARRATOR] An instant before the car sinks, Mr. Muroga fled from the vehicle, barely escaping with his life. We took this opportunity to have him watch the images and give us his thoughts.

[MR. MUROGA] Ah, right at this point. I saw the cars being swept along and thought “It’s a tsunami!”

[NARRATOR] From the left-side of the screen, cars flow past and Mr. Muroga realizes the danger.

[MR. MUROGA] The camera doesn’t capture it, but I could see in the rearview mirror that an even faster tsunami had already arrived behind me.

7:33~8:16

[NARRATOR] These are pictures Mr. Muroga took with his own camera. This picture looking out the back of the car allows us to understand the ferocity with which the tsunami behind him arrived.

[MR. MUROGA] At this time, the cars were crashing into each other with great force and my car began to be battered out of shape.

[NARRATOR] Surrounded by waves, Mr. Muroga decided it was too dangerous to try to leave his vehicle.

[MR. MUROGA] I thought about things like, “Maybe I’ll be able to escape when the water recedes.”

[NARRATOR] However, instead of receding, the water began to churn with even greater intensity.

8:16~8:55

{MR. MUROGA} At this point, the car began to be swept away. I was carried away by the current.

[NARRATOR] The tsunami flowed from the ocean between the buildings, capturing Mr. Muroga’s car like a pincer. Within only 30 seconds his car was completely afloat and slowly drifted along. But after that his car entered the faster part of the current and was dragged along by the tsunami.

8:55~9:20

[NARRATOR] This is the point at which Mr. Muroga, being swept along by the tsunami, escaped from his vehicle.

[MR. MUROGA’S VOICE ON VIDEO] Okay, now!

[MR. MUROGA] I think I jumped from the vehicle at this point. Because water suddenly began pouring inside.

[NARRATOR] Just moments before the car sinks, Mr. Muroga makes his escape through the window he had opened earlier.

9:20~9:55

[NARRATOR] Mr. Muroga’s car was swept approximately 150 meters into the wall of a warehouse before sinking. Mr. Muroga, while being swept along by the current, managed to swim to a nearby building and pull himself from the water. He visits the scene of the accident for the first time since the incident. As he approaches the area where the current was strongest, he notices something.

[MR. MUROGA] Ah, look over there, by the divider. Right there, the curb has been practically erased. Clearly the tsunami did that, no?

9:55~11:16

[NARRATOR] Even now, three months later, the evidence of the tsunami remains. What can we learn from these images? We requested Dr. Imura, a tsunami specialist to analyze them. The first thing he noticed was how quickly the water level rose.

[DR. IMURA] At this point it’s already over 50 centimeters deep and the cars are starting to float. Once that happens, the car is beyond control. The tanker truck has larger [in diameter] tires and isn’t floating yet. And then after the height reaches 1 meter, even trucks begin to float away.

[NARRATOR] Dr. Imura points out that once the water level rises above the height of the tires, the vehicle will begin to float and in a very short time be beyond driver control.

[DR. IMURA] Almost as soon as the tsunami appears before your eyes, your vehicle will begin to float. At that point you should monitor the situation and if the current doesn’t seem too strong and if there isn’t a lot of dangerous debris nearby, you should break your window and leave the vehicle as quickly as possible. Once outside, you should head for the highest area you can find, such as a fence or telephone pole—whatever is available. Grab onto whatever it is and climb as high as you can.

11:16~12:15

[NARRATOR] Also, Dr. Imura points out the difficulty vehicles pose on your ability to hear.

[DR. IMURA] It’s important to remember that the sound of the car will drown out outside sounds and make them harder to hear. The various sounds of a car may make it difficult to hear the approaching tsunami.

[NARRATOR] It is certainly true on the video that you cannot hear the roar of the tsunami approaching over the sounds the car. Mr. Muroga also had this to say about the sound.

[MR. MUROGA] In the video, I think you can see that there are many people lined up on the roof of that building. I’m pretty sure these people were screaming at us to run and get out of there. But none of us in our vehicles noticed them. We couldn’t hear them.

12:15~13:44

[NARRATOR] About trying to escape a tsunami in your vehicle, tsunami specialist Dr. Imura had this to say.

[DR. IMURA] Basically, people who can’t walk well should use a car to try to escape. Those who can walk or run should, in principle, not use their vehicles.

[NARRATOR] Cars being swept along… the might of the tsunami. Mr. Muroga told us that through these images he hopes to educate others about the awful power of the tsunami.

[NEWSCASTER, GRAY SUIT] It seems like Mr. Muroga maintained his calm in a difficult situation. In that part of the city, there are lots of buildings and you can’t see very far, making it difficult to notice the approaching tsunami. Furthermore, as we saw in the video, with the windows rolled up you can’t hear the tsunami approaching either.

[NEWSCASTER, FEMALE] It was very quiet on the video, wasn’t it?

[NEWSCASTER, GRAY SUIT] It had been an hour since the earthquake struck and Mr. Muroga was more than 1km inland, so he didn’t think there was any danger from a tsunami.

[NEWSCASTER, FEMALE] According to our tsunami specialist, it was the first time he had ever seen footage like this taken from within the tsunami.

[NEWSCASTER, GRAY SUIT] It’s very valuable footage. It would be great if many people—everyday people and tsunami specialists—could watch this footage and from it find the means of how to protect themselves and others.

Germany's Downfall Will Be Facilitated By This Roundabout

poolcleaner says...

Geez, I thought we had poor city planning on the west coast in the United States. This is pretty bad.

Why create a tiny roundabout without massive YIELD notifications in the middle of a four lane intersection -- and with a crosswalk? It's a recipe for disaster. Just put up some stop signs/lights and turn it back into a normal intersection.

The only roundabouts that I know of that work (and even these have some problems) are larger, multi-laned roundabouts with a solid structure/island in the middle to prevent driving straight through it and other similar moving violations due to ignorance/impatience.

We have a decent number of larger roundabouts in California, mostly in south Orange County (as well as the Orange circle, which is more inland) and there's a couple in Long Beach. I've NEVER seen these types of problems. Reminds me of what happens when street lights go out due to a power outage.

Danish sailors make insane harbour entry attempt

coolhund says...

If you have experience its worth the risk. I was in a much smaller storm on a boat as small as the one in the video, and we were lucky to reach the harbor. One other (bigger boat) wasnt that lucky, they werent even on board because they spend time somewhere inland. Everything they had on board was spread all over the ocean. An air mattress even flew right into the harbor, and they were about 1 km out. Their anchor also got loose and it drifted about 5 km away. Lucky it didnt crash.

OMG! Louisiana Local Tells Truth On BP Cleanup

Porksandwich says...

That was a very impressive speech by someone who obviously does not speak publicly (constant mic pops from the P sounds and such). And it begins to answer some questions as to why you never see home footage and the "little people" reporting on things, because if the government is going so far as to block big media it should be a small thing to block the little guys from ever gaining popularity.

As for the people not leaving, money might be an issue...but it might be of question of what's going to be left for them when they do and where is it safe to go? If it's already hitting their homes, how far do they have to go to escape it...because the fumes and acid rain coming from it can hit in land. Is leaving the state heading inland enough? Are they in trouble already because they haven't left yet? Will it kill them from the exposure they've had so far?

Plus the whole subject of, if they leave...does that mean they still have a case against BP? Or did they leave for another reason? Because officially at this point in time, no one has released a statement saying what this shit in the water/land/air can do to a person or advised them to do anything.

So if you're potentially terminally sick already and you potentially won't have a case to be made for financial reimbursement and treatment of yourself, kids, and anything you may have lost because of this....why shouldn't you make it your mission in life to fuck BP and those who made it all fall the way it did?

So, Apparently It's Raining Oil Around The Gulf...

BoneRemake says...

awww man , I just thought of that, once they start getting hurricanes and such that oil is going to be blown alllll over trees and just sprayed like a garden hose right over the environment inland.

I know oil can evaporate, but it does it soooooOOOoOOOOo slowly, can this be possible ?

Rachel Maddow: Racist Roots of Arizona Law

NordlichReiter says...

This bill ignores the real problem. Not justly dealing with the illegal immigration problem that exists in the western states. Tijuana any one, or Nogales? What about the 100 mile inland search and identify checkpoints? I was stopped but never searched every time I went from Arizona to Texas; I was questioned as well.

That's the hardest thing about this bill is that it seems to be doing some good, when in reality it is not. It skirts the issues, and only tightens its grip around civil rights and the freedom of citizens to move from place to place; without fear of repercussion or because of their pigmentation. It also puts a heavy hammer over the police to force them to do their jobs; whatever that may be.

There is an illegal immigration issue, but it hardly requires racist, or unconstitutional laws to solve it. As stereotypical as this sounds, a large amount of people will think that if a bill is not in place then illegal immigrants will get a free ride. That does a disservice to all Naturalized Citizens(Some of which may be more informed of US history than any Naturally Born Citizen), and it disenfranchises the conservative right; hardly needed at the moment.

Whether it is liked or not; illegal immigration is Illegal and that will probably never change.

US Border Patrol tries to take passenger's camera

Wow, the y/t poster is a paranoid moron. He should try reading the law as to how/where CBP are allowed to operate. And if he doesn't like it write his reps or run for office. Since the checkpoint is inland, he would be fine then with the local SO or State Police running it? Or maybe the FBI or military? And an illegal working for CBP? Nice try.
I know there's a lot of anti-establishment, the cops are always wrong, we live in a police state mentality here, but don't get too paranoid folks. The cops aren't always wrong, sometimes they need to use force (but F tasers), we don't live in Nazi Germany, and we should be vigilant in keeping government in check. But harassing these guys is like harassing a Walmart greeter because you don't like their policies. Dick move.
As for the whole camera thing, who cares if the guy has a camera. Do your job, and don't be a dick about it. Although, my instructors old us not to advertise that we were BP Agents and try not to have pics taken...since some cartels have bounties out for killing Agents.

The y/t poster is paranoid. I doubt the border patrol agent is "illegal", though that's incidental. First, BP are nothing like Walmart greeters. That's a bad analogy. Harassing someone who wants to keep you from freely moving in a supposed free country and trying to steal your private property is nothing like harassing a gentle underpaid elderly woman saying hi to everyone entering Walmart. The BP are pests and abuse their power constantly.

And, yes, we do live in a police state once the government recognizes it has a right to kill its own citizens without due process. There's nothing paranoid about noticing the increased security measures that encroach on our liberties, or states forcing subversives to register, or little 12-year old girls being marched out of class wearing handcuffs, or the countless cases where law enforcement destroy videotape evidence, or the endless beat first ask questions later cases, or local and state police being supplied military weapons by the Pentagon, or being arrested for videotaping officers, or the use of sedatives on the public by police officers.

That's just to name a few.

You've not been inconvenienced by them have you? Their searches are haphazard, and they cause massive backups on the road for miles. They make a bad situation worse, and fuck that. You have the right to tape any fucking peace officer you wish. Paranoid or not. They should be afraid of the US citizen we should not be afraid of them. The moment he reached his hand into that car he violated the 4th ammendment.

Seeing as to how the US citizen did not have anyone there to save his ass I think he was quite in the right to do what he did. You reach your hand into my car without proper protocol you may come back with a stump. The video proves that the cop did not have Probable Cause to enter the vehicle ergo; he should be removed from duty as he is a danger to the public.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
