David Attenborough on God

Seric says...

I think with religion you have to use a mix of probability and logic. In my mind, the probability of a omnipotent being or creator seems unlikely given the evidence or information that we have so far obtained. The fact that it's unlikely doesn't prove that it isn't true. Given the question 'Does a God exist?' - binary logic cannot be applied as it is an unknown, it can only be applied to questions with definate yes or no answers.

With such a broad subject such as religion, with multiple sects, understandings and uptakes to it's teachings, ranging from a no questions asked 'yes, the earth and everything on it was created by a being in 7 days, fact' to 'I don't believe this stuff ACTUALLY happened, but I think it's a good set of teachings to live by' and everything inbetween, it's difficult to apply Sir David's quote to any particular set of christian beliefs, especially with so little information available. As mentioned before however, it's most likely that he is arguing against the creationist theory, with which he is quite famous for doing so - see his wikipedia page section on this matter ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough#Religion_and_creationism ). It seems natural for David to have an opinion on this matter given his career, and likely many people are interested in his thoughts rather than it being an attack on a religion.

My view is that he is attempting to state his case against creationist belief, that evolution is non-existant, and that an argument for god and intelligent design cannot be made by select choosing examples from nature rather than sampling from it as a whole, you can't choose one thing and ignore another. I wouldn't say that it is an 'attack' on christianity, that would be similar to saying 'I don't believe in santa, because I didn't get any christmas presents' to be an 'attack' on saint nick. He is just putting accross his view/opinion on the question being asked. In my opinion, the interviewer was linking the question about belief in a god and the philosophy of nature.

I for one would like to see the entirity of this interview.

Also,

There is no positive light that could possibly outweigh the blight on humanity that is Christianity. When it finally is extinguished and we humans have moved on, the world will be a better place. Christianity is the cancer of the mind.

I find it difficult to believe that someone can be ignorant enough to tar all individuals in a religion with the same brush. Even broadly speaking, that's a strong and highly generalised view. I have no problem with people believing in what they like, as long as they don't put their belief on me, use it in an argument or apply it irrationally to important matters (such as being elected into office lolololol ¬_¬), they can believe what they wish. To call christianity a cancer of the mind could equally be replied to by saying your narrow view of religion is certainly a handicap.

Final 6 minutes of Battlestar Galactica - *MAJOR SPOILERS*

Sagemind says...

I don't think it would have mattered how they ended it, no one would have aproved. It's the same as the first series, the story just becomes too big with too many posibilities. Everyone has their own idea of where it should have gone.

At least this time they didn't have them finding earth and having to keep it a secret from the cylons - they just didn't know how to end that one either.

I think the best ending was to skip the ending and flash forward leaving us to all create our own stories as to what happened inbetween.

Kyle Downes' Short Visual History of Videogames

jmd says...

Oh what crap this video is..let me count the ways...

1. Saturn and PS1 had a huge time gap, of which the saturns total lack of new games inbetween them killed customer confidence in it.

2. What in the hell was that crap about n64? twice as fun? twice as powerful? It came out so late it probably never sold as many units as saturn did. As for power, there really isn't anything on it to show its 64 bits of power. Its video chip looks alot better thanks too texture smoothing and perspective correction, however I think it pushes slightly less polygons because of these effects. Then of course the PS1 had the cd which offered many more possabilities that the cart just could not match.

3. skipping the dreamcast until after the ps2 and xbox, this is where I shut it off. Dreamcast was a kick ass system and the first of the next gen consoles. It also sold very well and was competitive with the ps2 until the end. It wasn't consumer demand that killed the console, it was sega.

Also I would expect something with the name visual in it to be...well..more visual.

The Atheist Delusion

>> ^gwiz665:
Following evidence
All religious people are not idiots, but all religion is idiotic. If you cut away all of the superstitious parts of religion, you can begin to use it properly. I can certainly allow for any people to make their argument, but I've yet to see any religious argument that is supported by evidence. Morality derived from the Bible is immoral according to our existing laws, so that's probably not a good source.

Huh? Why would a person who is not an idiot follow something that is idiotic? That makes no sense. Either religious people are idiots for following a religion, or not all religion is idiotic. There's no inbetween. What you're showing is that you don't understand why any intelligent adult would willingly follow a religion. That's OK; you don't need to understand. But I do understand. And I could even explain it to you if you weren't so dead set on believing that religion is inherently idiotic.

Religious arguments supported by evidence:

"Violence doesn't solve problems."
"Treat others the way you want to be treated yourself."
"Money doesn't bring happiness, and often turns people selfish."

Women and VideoSift: Why I'm a feminist. Guys, I quoted you. (Terrible Talk Post)

Kreegath says...

There's no universal definition of either feminism or feminist stances, which is why there's no way to discuss it and reach any universal agreement. There's simply no way to win when taking on "feminists", because anything and everything you say WILL be wrong. If you think women should be able to wear burkas you're oppressing them, but if you are for them wearing whatever they like you're objectifying them. It's all depending on what feminist you ask and where you're asking the question, and always the discussion is predetermined by the mindset that all womanhood is being oppressed and that manhood as a whole is oppressing them.

There are still areas where men and women are unequal, but you really have to realize that driving a wedge inbetween the people who hold those beliefs and trapping them in an argument where all answers are wrong won't further any thoughts on equality.
"Equal but different" is how my mother brought me up to look on men and women. There are people who don't see it that way; some who see it as men being superior to women, and relatively recently that women are superior to men, that's where you need to focus your attention if you ask me.

Feminism isn't about reprimanding people for complimenting a woman in a clumsy manner, about verbally attacking someone for making a joke or try to create some moral highground by drawing farfetched conclusions based on scewed movie statistics. Chastising the people who hold the equality beliefs will not further any feminist cause, because there's no corralation between enjoying Dita von Teese's burlesque show and objectifying women and viewing them as inferior to men.
Change comes from engaging the minds and views of persons who haven't been brought up into thinking humans are equal no matter their gender.

There was a political party who formed in Sweden called FI (feministic initiative) which fell apart in a matter of months. It did so because it couldn't agree on a political agenda, what policies to push and what parties to cooperate with, due to everyone having different ideas on what feministic initiative meant. There was no common ground to build a platform on, because on every issue one member wanted to pursue, another held the opposing view on the same argument.
The initiative ended up polarizing people even more and doing more harm than good, simply by attacking persons who held the view that everyone's equal by turning everything they did into an affront to women's suffrage.

Yeah, I noticed that you voted for most of 'em, thanks. Sometimes they all go in in a row, sometimes others subs slip inbetween, depending on the traffic and such. Most folks just vote for one or two which is just fine.

Kreegath says...

Hahahaha, of course it's Ron Paul's fault for stealing his wife or his wife's fault for leaving him, or his monkey's fault for scaring off the wife. Personally I think it's NASCAR's fault for getting inbetween the husband and his wife.

Loved the video, btw. Keep up the good work!

glad to see other filmmakers on the sift!

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Thanks, qruel. Yes, we're in post now. We haven't started editting yet, though. Um, the film is a drama. I'm terrible with pitches, but the best one I could come up with was Kramer v Kramer meets Wild Things, I suppose. Once we're done cutting it, we hope to get it out into festivals and all that. Right now, I'm just focusing on getting the film cut, and all that other marketing and festial stuff can wait for now.

wow, very cool. a feature is a helluva lot of work.

are you in post now ? if so where at ?

tell me about the film (story and techinical info) and your hopes for it when done.

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Haha, you are so right. I just shot a feature out here, and I swore never to shoot another one in LA. It's not friendly to indie filmmakers. I decided early on to go guerilla and shoot without permits, so we were constantly ducking cops. We only got kicked out of one area, which was by a Ranger up on a canyon trail overlooking the cityscape. So, we just packed everything up, made the hike down, and a week later we went back to get the rest of the shots.

Way too expensive out here to shoot. Next feature I do, I'm taking it back to North Carolina, which is where I'm from originally.

In reply to this comment by qruel:
Hey, thanks for the compliment. we shot the film here in the midwest (along with all the other films on that site).

i've got a few friends in La nd they talk about how expensive it is and all the permits they have to get before shooting and it makes me wonder how any indie projects get done there

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Hey, that's really well done. I wasn't expecting the spiders at the end. And, I loved the nod to Audition with her wardrobe at the end. Where did you shoot that? Out here in LA, or are you somewhere else? Great job.

I was posting to Farhad when i saw your comment about AUDTION. It was DEFINATELY creepy as hell. so here is a short movie I thought you might dig called THE EVIL INSIDE (forgive me if I already sent this to you). I edited this film and the director was a HUGE audition fan (you'll tell from the short) This is the 10 minute version (down from 30 minutes)

Definitely needs to be watched fullscreen/using the VS "bigger" button below the video. Damn near impossible to see anything for most of the video at default size.

Anywho, damn I love the Thief series, even number three to a degree (woo rhyming). I started over with Thief 3 a few months ago, specifically to see the Cradle level when, inbetween gaming sessions, my motherboard fried. Guess I need another go :-D
