At that time, reefer cars were only just starting to use mechanical cooling systems. Before then, they were all basically ice boxes. The early systems weren't that efficient and needed to move to cool.

yea, those first 19 days are a cakewalk if you have an icebox. its those guys using lumps of wood and floating chair cushions that are in trouble.
