Remembering Some Of the Most Notorious Videosift Shills (History Talk Post)

enoch says...

@mintbbb
hey hey stranger!
i dont know why you second guess yourself in regards to how you are perceived based on peoples subjective and highly irrational understandings.

humans...a curious lot.

you are a total sweetie.you are just super sensitive and some people never really understood that about you.
your husband is an idealist.
thats not a bad thing,in fact that can be a very good thing.

we NEED people to be dreamers and your husband is a dreamer and sometimes that can be frustrating if you are in an argument with him (which i have been).

i didnt always agree with him but i always liked him.

some here on the sift have questioned my friendship with @chingalera.
they didnt understand.
i seemed to be so much more approachable and less acidic in my commentary.
so how could i align myself with such a trollish sifter?

the answer is simply because i get him.
we BOTH are idealists.
just like your husband.
the difference lies in that both ching and i battle,on a daily basis, the rising tide of cynicism.

a cynicism that was born out of being beaten, imprisoned, lied to,betrayed and many times by the very people and/or institutions that we once were idealistic about.

disillusion is a real motherfucker.

yet we still retain that idealism.
we both are humanists.
we care about people.

so everything we do or say is with that at its heart.
so when ching is berating somebody, they may perceive that as an attack.
and it is but it is NOT an attack on them, personally, but rather an attack on their media-induced mythology.
or maybe a person is suffering a severe case of myopia and needs to be shaken out of their apathetic dystopia.

but its always, and i mean ALWAYS to get someone to look at a situation with a different perspective or challenge a belief.
to get people to actually think.
to not just give in to authority but to realize ALL authority is illegitimate until proven otherwise.

i tend to use less shocking and confrontational vernacular than ching does.so that may explain peoples confusion why i consider him a friend.

but if you understood his intent, the words he uses would have less of an emotional impact.

note* by my commentary i am not excusing, condoning nor dismissing chings very real outbursts that actually did hurt some feelings.
but i also know that when people get their feelings hurt they sometimes lash out (and i also suspect that those outbursts were in conjunction with copious amounts of booze).

passionate people are just as sensitive as the next and can/will retaliate in kind when hurt.i know i have.

which brings me to the actual point at hand (sorry..i tend to rant).

why would we remove/negate anything from the archives?
the organic growth and procession of a community should be held intact.
warts and all.
to remove, edit or scrub clean serves nothing, except to maybe repeat past indiscretions.

we never use the ignore button.
nor the sarcasm or jokingly.
so why would we erase the communities past dealings?
be they enlightening or incredibly droll?
its who we were and gives us all a marker where we may be going.

just a thought.

Pastor Pretends to be Open Minded in Sterile Modernist Room

lord of war-the interrogation scene

coolhund says...

Me thinks you didnt understand the message of that movie. Or people.
Only very few people will turn into a murderer even in such a situation.

Yogi said:

I never understood this scene to be honest. If I was Ethan Hawke and someone told me I had to let the guy I've been hunting all this time, I'd just kill him. They're not putting one of their own away for killing an arms dealer. The point is Ethan played this role like he had a singular purpose, like he wasn't wise to the game when the guys in his position always are or they're marginalized way ahead of time.

So if you happen to have spent your life hunting someone who is just the personification of evil and your told to let them go. Just blow their brains out please, take the moral hit for the rest of us.

Eric Hovind Debates a 6th Grader

shinyblurry says...

@enoch The argument he is making is this:

Without being omnipotent, you cannot know anything for certain. If you don't know anything for certain, you don't really know anything, period. For example, any claim to knowledge that you make, such as that you exist, that 2 + 2 = 4, or that the sky is blue, is based on what your senses and reasoning are telling you. When asked to justify how you know your senses and reasoning are valid, you could only reply that you know that by your senses and reasoning. This is of course a viciously circular argument, and logically fallacious.

So because of this problem, which is really the problem of induction, you couldn't name even one thing you are absolutely certain of. You could only say that you think it is true, but that is a big difference from knowing it for certain. For example, if you asked someone what the speed limit of the road you're on is, and they answered "i think it is 60 miles an hour", do they know it ? No they don't.

So, there is only one other way to know something for certain, which is revelation for an omnipotent being, someone who does know everything. So therefore, his argument is that without God, you can't know anything.

So, although it sounded quite awkward, the kid didnt understand what Eric was talking about, and he actually lost the argument by making an absolute knowledge claim that he couldn't justify. Although I also tend to agree with @rottenseed.

Zero Punctuation: Guild Wars 2

teebeenz says...

>> ^jmzero:

As for jmzero... I dont think hes even played it.

Well, uh, you're wrong. I've played about an hour, which was a half hour more than I needed to see this wasn't the game for me. I played the first game really quite a lot.
There are many things you can say about GW2, both good and bad, but "slightly different flavor of WoW" isnt one of them.

I don't think YOU'VE played it. Ha! See how annoying that is?
Anyways, it's a hell of a lot more like WoW than Guild Wars 1, though I suppose MMO connoisseurs probably see all sorts of distinguishing characteristics. I played through the storyline of Guild Wars 1 and only played with other people once or twice (using the AI mercenary things as required). In Guild Wars, I didn't even get to fight the "boss" thing at the end of the tutorial - someone killed it before I got close. That's not the same kind of game.
And they've futzed with the multi-player (which to me was the actual game). I can't just pick the skills I want. I can't just jump into a reasonably balanced (and levelled) PvP character (or, if I can, they didn't present that option very well). In the first game, I made a PvP monk with a bunch of heals, and was doing multiplayer (and having fun) immediately - like, within 10 minutes of installing the game. I have no idea how far off the horizon that is in Guild Wars II, but even when it comes I'm quite sure I don't want to play it. It plays completely different - far more action-RPG focus instead of the old focus on skill-selection and tactics. If I want an action-y game, I'll play a game style that supports that - like DotA.
Guild Wars 1 was a really appealing game for me. Guild Wars II is nothing of the sort - and to me it goes in the same trash-heap as every other "kill 10 rats", "grind equipment and levels" MMO that came before it.
Oh, but yeah, I didn't realize that it's set in the same painfully, painfully generic fantasy universe (I really didn't). Thanks for straightening me out on that.

1. Basing any game on an hours play is stupid.
2. You talk about how you loved GW1s story, yet you ignored the story in GW2 which said wait for the NPC.... this was there so you didnt miss out on killing the boss.... perhaps you should pay attention next time.
3. In GW1 most people picked the same 3 or so skills for weapons every time, AN simply locked the skills in place to make sure people who didnt understand wouldnt be caught out with a build which was useless. All the other skills can be picked by the player, tho again with more limitations. The GW1 system was powerful, but impossible to balance. The new system is able to be managed by AN, but it sactually more indepth than it seems, tho it is simpler.
4. You can jump into pvp right away actually. Just make a charater (such as a guardian) and goto the pvp lobby. Done, lvl 80 with access to all items, skills and access to the jump in, and tournament play. Again, if you'd bothered to play the game you would have known this. All this information was in the manuel linked right from the launcher.
5. You dont grind equipment and levels. You'll get both by doing whatever you want, be it spvp, wvw, story content or jump roaming around.

Its not perfect, but dear lord play it first to find out for yourself.

Now..., Where do I register for the courses?

I was thinking the same thing, I didnt understand any of this. With that said, in the amazing age of the internet, there are quite a few paths to courses atleast leading up to this, for example, check out the Kahn Academy, it's brilliant: http://www.khanacademy.org/

Before you Enlist - what military recruiters don't tell you

vairetube says...

What I didnt understand was... how many people enlisting do not want to be there, or do not have the right mindset... it simply wasnt on my mind when i was thinking about why joining the navy would be good.

I figured that, since it wasnt world war time, the mix would be slightly more squared away, as volunteers... plus all the updated facilities and training at great lakes

but luckily i realized, if i wanted going to go hang around a bunch of unruly kids while challenging my self... i should just go back to school... because i was only going to join to help myself.. and thats no reason to agree to take orders to kill someone during these days. not yet. you should join the military for the right reasons so you can stand by your actions and live with them.

Banned User Hate Mail (Sift Talk Post)

thelonebunman says...

I dont understand this? Why was this person banned? and why Humiliate them even more in this thread in what looks like "school yard" naming calling.

Wouldnt a warning or something a little less severe not have been more fitting, If it was a mistake at least. How do you even know that this is the same person? Mistakes happen and you people take yourselves very seriously from what i see above.

I mean maybe this person didnt read the rules fully, or maybe they didnt understand them. I just think a warning would have been much better.

Im new on here does this happen often? Where are the rules on posting? Banning people for posting a video they may have put on another video website seems like a very severe punishment to me.

Im lost here, help me understand?
