Euthanasia Coaster

AeroMechanical says...

Would this really be fatal? As I understand it, it takes a couple sustained minutes before damage from hypoxia starts and a few minutes after that before you'd actually die. This is assuming it's the sustained G-LOC that kills you, which may not be a correct assumption.

EIther way. I wouldn't ride it. Well, maybe with a g-suit and medics on hand. I'd probably black out in the first loop and not remember the rest of it, though.

Smarter Every Day -- Why you put on your oxygen mask first

worthwords says...

There was a programme about the death penalty hosted by Michael Portillo a few years back which pondered weather hypoxia was the more humane way of executing prisoners - it's weird that your brain can be in such a state of euphoria and intoxication when your survival depends on something as basic as correcting o2 levels.

The Importance of CPR

worthwords says...

In the UK, rescue breaths are used for paediatric (1yrs-puberty). And drowning is a 'special circumstance' whereby Cardiac arrest is almost always secondary to hypoxia there rescue breaths increase survival over 'hands only' CPR,
It's in the resus manual...l https://lms.resus.org.uk/modules/m10-v2-cardiac-arrest/10346/resources/chapter_12.pdf

So not a good example in this video. However saying that any *decent* attempt at chest compression only is going to help someone who is not breathing so not to be discouraged.

Actually, hands free cpr is now taught. Not rescue breath. You are right about the rest.

What a Pilot Sounds Like With Extreme Hypoxia

Of the many ways one might die I think death by hypoxia as you tumble into the black aint so bad. Your body would probably get a pretty nice cremation when your orbit takes you back towards earth.

ps. Kessler Syndrome is a bitch.

Voice Actor Recovers From TMD By Taking Ambien

bmacs27 says...

I'm glad I'm not alone. Whatever this is... it wasn't caused by a pulled tooth. My suspicion is he's practicing for a part, and wants doctors to coach him. My friend mentioned it could be psychogenic as well. It would be extremely strange however, and she agreed, most likely fake.

>> ^snoozedoctor:

Nope. Little, to no, chance of that either. Hypoxia from over sedation would more likely affect the frontal lobes. If he had hypoxia severe enough to produce brain stem injury, he would have associated severe cognitive dysfunction as well. If this guy's symptoms are real, he would appear to have a cerebellar/brainstem lesion, such as a tumor or stroke. Only problem with that is, Ambien would have no effect on it. A serious "reaction" to sedatives would be of the allergic type and would not result in such a focal deficit. Can't prove it, but I think this guy is either faking his symptoms (most likely), or has some type of psychogenic dysarthria.

>> ^snoozedoctor:
I say probably fake. TMJ dysfunction does not result in the dysarthria this guys appears to exhibit. Because it's symmetrical, it would almost have to be a central brain lesion of some sort. Nerve injury from dental extraction would be unilateral and involve sensory, not motor nerves. Whatever this guy exhibits, it has nothing to do with a dental extraction.
Unless they're using TMD to mean something other than Temporo-Mandibular Disorder, I agree that it is extremely unlikely that it's post-extraction trauma. Possible neurological defect as a result of over-sedation or reaction to the sedative?

near death experiences (Science Talk Post)

I love the wording of this passage:

A visual disorder, such as glaucoma, can also result in loss of peripheral vision leading to tunnel vision. Indeed, such tunnel vision is associated with extreme fear and hypoxia (i.e. oxygen loss), two processes common to dying.

Pity the people who need to read this are the kinds who distrust (and will generally dismiss) science if it contradicts their superstitious beliefs.

For anyone who's interested, the mental disorder that he's exhibiting is part of a subsection of paraphilias called frotteurism.

The healthiest thing this man can do is use Sublimation and become a part of some sort of sex show. Until then he's going to keep running into problems with the law.

Some other Paraphilias:
Pedophilia - sexual urges towards children
Exhibitionism - recurrent desire to expose genitals to a stranger
Voyeurism - sexual pleasure from watching other who are naked, grooming, or having sex.
Sadism - sexual pleasure derived from others' pain
Masochism - sexual pleasure derived from being abused or dominated
Fetishism - sexual focus on objects (transvestite falls in here)
Frotteurism - male rubbing of genitals against fully clothed woman to achieve orgasm, subways/buses (what is apparent in this video)
Zoophilia - animals preferred in sexual fantasies or practices
Coprophilia - combining sex and defecation
Urophilia - combining sex and urination
Necrophilia - preferred sex with cadavers
Hypoxyphilia - altered state of consciousness secondary to hypoxia while experiencing orgasm. (Autoerotic asphyxiation, etc.)

If he had stuck himself for real we would have seen a notable drop in speech power, shaking in his hand, and shortness of breath.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_%28circulatory%29

I'm refering to Grade 1 shock: "Anxiety, restlessness, altered mental state due to decreased cerebral perfusion and subsequent hypoxia".

Basically the one part of the brain would have said, "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!?"

Anyone who has ever had blood drawn knows that one vial feels like. Two vials, feels twice as bad. Some people even faint. This is cased by grade 1 shock, those two or three vials of blood are what were circulating around your body, bringing oxygen around.

This, is a well done trick. However, it was not real given the position of the needle to the Brachial artery, he would be a fool to do this for real.

Still, the effects of grade one shock could be deaden by practice, there is still a chance he was dumb enough to stab himself. Which he sets in the minds of his audience by walking off stage without pulling the needle out. Normally a wounding such as this, the puncturing object is not removed, because of the resulting re-opening of the wound and subsequent blood loss. The object is best removed by medical professionals who can react quickly with a clotting agent, hemostat, or direct pressure on the wound.

That said, beyond agreeable, reasonable standards of taxation, no person has a moral right to take another person's money by force, and electing a politijerk who will take that money by force in your name or on behalf of "the poor" is just as guilty as a common thief.

QM you need to come down, the thin air up on that high horse is causing hypoxia and making you delusional.

What's agreeable to some isn't to everyone else, no government will ever make everyone happy.

For instance, I'd be content paying 50% of my earnings in taxes, assuming that in return everyone received quality healthcare, a university education, realistic mass transit, etc..

You, on the other hand, wouldn't be happy if you were assessed 10¢ for every 1000$ you earned, and it went to anything but killing innocent brown people in third world companies.

H A L O Jumpin'

Morganth says...

This looks to be a practice jump. Out of the back you can see that they're above the cumulus layer of clouds, but they don't have oxygen masks which are needed for any jumps over 20,000 which is really what HALO is. Hypoxia = bad.

How to Kill a Human Being - in search of a painless death

"I have gone unconscious, and it is ... terrible.

I never felt euphoric about any of it..."

Sounds like you were suffering from a heart condition (Atrial fib?)
It's not the hypoxia itself that caused all of your associated symptoms and discomfort. Nitrogen induced hypoxia like those mentioned in the documentary would produce that euphoric state before unconciousness.

How to Kill a Human Being - in search of a painless death

omnistegan says...

It's interesting that you would mention that Kreegath, the same thought occured to me when I was watching. I think if I had a choice of dying in my fated way or dying from an altitude hypoxia, altitude hypoxia would be the clear winner.

Not long ago I was near suicidal, and I think if I had access and option to such a painless euphoric death, things may have turned out differently.

Cryonics ~ Discussion Welcome ! :)

8383 says...

There are some animals that can survive freezing, such as the Weta, but they are highly different to mammals in terms of physiology and can only survive to -10°C. Human brain cells will begin to permanently degrade with less than 5 minutes of cerebral hypoxia, and it didn't look like they were able to freeze faster than that safely. Even if the cells could eventually be repaired, it's the complex millions of neural connections that make you you that are lost forever.

Speaking philosophically, I am a survivor of cancer and chronic kidney failure and now have a transplant. So I have confronted my own mortality more than most. Yet I still find the fear of death I see in the people in this program surprising. For me death is just another part of the journey, and would much rather try and live the best life I can now that spend tens of thousands on an untested idea.
But this is only my personal opinion, and if the members get some sort of peace of mind from this then I hope it's worth the money.

But seriously, it's only a matter of time before Alcor starts selling Soylent Green.
