Imagine If All Atheists Left America

GeeSussFreeK says...

>> ^gwiz665:

I want that. Christianity is a pox on the human mind and must be purged for our continued survival.
>> ^VoodooV:
I feel as though there is a faction of atheists out there that don't simply want equal rights and separation of church and state. They seem to want revenge on Christianity. Christianity is definitely guilty of being the cause of a lot of atrocities and making life harder on people because of discrimination and such. Because of that, there are certainly a lot of angry people out there who aren't going to be satisfied with equal representation and separation of church and state.
We've got to keep a reign on that type of behavior.

I think there are greater threats to human kind than "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" in this world.

I see what you're saying. I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not gonna say the world is all tulips and butterflies, but as someone who used to be in a pretty dark place myself and think there was no point to anything, I guess the only thing I can offer is the hope that maybe you won't feel that way forever. In my case, I realized a lot of the assumptions I was making about other people were just plain wrong. They were based on the fact that I'd been hurt pretty bad when I was younger by people I trusted, and I kind of developed this self-defense mechanism of just assuming everyone is an asshat. If you don't ever get close to anybody, they can't ever hurt you right?

I can't say it was any one thing that changed me in the end. Over time I started to become aware of inconsistencies in my perceptions. People I thought were total assholes turned out to be all right. And other people that were actually assholes... I came to understand why they acted that way. Sometimes, knowing how they got there, I couldn't blame them. Plus, I was pretty miserable too believing the worst in people all the time. So I decided to change.

Anyways, I hope you can change your mind someday too.

You're right, about pretty much everything you said, but there's no better or worse here, there's a person and his willingness to make "his world" better. Will I receive less support when I need it most if I turn my back on most people in my community, of course, that is unfortunately not reason enough for me to not do so seeing as I hate my community. I can be a "better" person, I can say hi to my neighbors, I can help people out, I can do lots of shit, I just don't want to in most cases. It's not some fierce ideology, it's just me as a person reacting to how I feel about my fellow man (which is usually disgust). Don't get me wrong, I don't go out of my way to fuck people over, and I'm not an asshole generally, but I will go out of my way to remain passive, just the thought of associating myself with other people in some common goal makes me sick. Human kind is a mass of retarded flesh from which occasionally there gets spewed a decent chunk, a free thinker, someone I can respect. Ignoring everyone but those few can be considered childish, but in my eyes it's not an option, it's either that or to be constantly consumed by rage and frustration, the world of tomorrow doesn't really enter the equation...

Your "world," like mine, is probably composed of friends and relatives. That is what I meant by "world," your personal world. And yes, the "world" (your friends and family) will come and help you when you're in a pinch if you've taken the time to carefully forge those connections (and they won't if you haven't). And in fact the greater world at large may come and help you too--but certainly not if you've been turning your back on it and free-riding the whole time.

I'm not asking you to fix society. I'm simply telling you if you want to live in a better "world" (in the personal sense), you can start making changes right where you are. You could say "hi" to your neighbors and get to know them better. You could help clean up trash in your neighborhood. Basically, you can improve your "local" world. Do something. Do anything. Get other people to do something with you (friends or family). And encourage them to get others to do something. Like I said, doesn't have to be huge or take a lot of time. The thing is, it's those collections of individual choices on a grand scale that shape our society. By improving your local "world" you in fact help improve the world at large as well.

As an aside, there's nothing wrong with being egocentric. That was the whole point of my post. If you truly are egocentric you'll realize your happiness in fact rests a great deal on the stability and happiness of the community in which you reside. It's in your best interest to make sure things don't go down the shitter. And (you'll just have to take my word for this) it actually turns out to be a lot more fun than whatever it was you were doing by yourself.

SDGundamX: The "world" doesn't back you up when you're in a pinch. And yes, individual actions do matter, and the world won't become a better place if people sit around and do nothing. I guess all I have to say is that
a: lucky thing the entire world isn't like myself
b: if you're willing to spend time and energy towards making this world a better place to live in (mostly for future generations as actual change takes bucketloads of time), good for you, I'm not, again, I have more egocentric things on my mind, and I lack the will to try and fix a society I feel completely alienated from.

Sharia Law - FFreeThinker

NordlichReiter says...

I wonder, with all the injustices in the world, how there will ever be progress or is all of the progress the world's had just an illusion. A prime time gossip show meant to shield human kind from reality. A veritable vestibule of mendacity.

Go back to sleep everything is OK.

Are western civilizations so much different? The same injustices simply, corporate.

A People's History of American Empire by Howard Zinn

raverman says...

You know, I get both sides of the argument...

Yes, historically man (not just the US or UK) has used brutal methods of conquest and expansion for power and resources. And Yes, as an enlightened, self aware creature human-kind should be able abandon war, cruelty and harm and embrace a world of peace and discussion.

But we are a product of evolution and it is part of our genetic instinct and nature. For thousands of years that instinct allowed us to grow and learn and develop. Even with our intelligence and logic, and now we don't need it. But it's too late, it's part of the core of our species - it is buried within us to compete, and take, and hunt, and kill to make OUR tribe stronger - regardless of the expense and sacrifice of others.

Sitting back and feeling guilty and horrified - maybe change the more 'enlightened' or gracile, but the dominant instinct will still be behind the decisions of those who are in power.

Why David Lynch Turned Down 'Return of the Jedi'

Dune is the most godawful, low quality, banal storied, craptastic piece of pseudo-epic shite that i have ever had the misfortune to sit through 1/4 of. That's all i could stomach, and i watch some real pieces of shit i can tell you. It should have been the death of everyone's career that got involved in this film, and their undying shame.
David Lynch should have been treated in a way which his name suggests.
The money put into the film (which by the look of the sets and effects could have only been about £30 and a sponsorship of sand from a DIY store) should have been put into more productive endeavours which more greatly enriched and benefitted human kind, such as fuelling a car whose sole purpose was to burn fuel, standing still and empty, polluting the atmosphere LESS than dune has polluted the earth with it's bad film making sneaking under the guise of cult success.
What an absolute embarassment of the highest order this film was. When we meet aliens, i want the whole history and any proof of the existence of this film to be obliterated lest we be laughed out of the universal council and sent home riding a giant fake looking worm, being forced to shout rediculous sounds pretending that we're duelling each other. Each of us trying to pull a more dramatic face than the last. And they'll give us all surgery to make us have kyle machlachlachlachlachlan's annoying facial features.
Meeting a person who enjoys that film is like stumbling into the inner order of the Nerd World Order. The people that get together to discuss the ethical implications of the latest doctor who episode. It's like meeting someone who enjoys "The Happening" and takes it for a modern great. You can't quite believe the words they're speaking, and you're almost certain they're playing a joke on you. A lot of them quote each other word for word "If you'd read the book before you saw the film..." - And i can only assume that the book was hypnotherapy which conditioned me to enjoy abominable films.
Alright, i feel better now.

You got me pegged.

Sheikh Shuraim Recitation - Surah Zumar

BicycleRepairMan says...

I can appreciate the poetic sound of the arabic language, and I can also to some degree admire the dedication of these people to the tradition, ritual and religion. I must however, sadly note the lack of actual content. As with most of the Qu'ran, there is actually NOTHING in this recitation that focuses on how to be a good person or a constructive member of society. There is no mention of human-to-human kindness, no lessons for those who mistreat, abuse or kill their fellow primates, nothing about compassion, mutual respect or equality. Nor is there anything substantial to learn in these long lectures, about any subjects like math, physics, biology, or even history.

Everything is about preserving an unquestioning, submissive, and one hundred percent dedication to the religion itself. And threats about what will happen if you fail to do so. Realize how great and merciful and good God is, or suffer the consequences on the ever-imminent Judgment Day.

This, for me, largely sums up what religion is: Good for nothing. Except itself. Its a self-replicating virus that thrives on human gullibility, fear and psychological needs.

TDS Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer - The Interview

Lodurr says...

I'd like to see Cramer keep his show because of how he's said he'll change. Although it is quite a show of weaknesses to his bosses to do that, to change his show's theme and style because of what a guy on another network said.

I don't think Cramer is a, or the, bad guy. The problems leading to this crisis have been systemic and country-wide. Jon is right that Cramer knew it was all a big game played with working stiffs' money, but Cramer had no idea what it would all come to because everyone that he looked up to was wrong or lying. It's a credit crisis, not just the fiscal kind, but the human kind where we used to trust people because of their years of experience and their credentials, and now it's evident that neither of those are prerequisites to being truthful or being right. The system needs a real shaking up to restore confidence and revive credit.
