4 felt like they forgot that he's just a cop who got pushed in to a bad situation each time (we all recall Holly's exasperated "Why does this keep happening to us?" in the second movie).

The usual problems of a series pushed past the point of good sense. With a vengeance would have been a good point to call it a day imo.
