The Newsroom - Why Will is a Republican

RFlagg says...

I don't think the people who think the Republican party is doomed understand just how brainwashed their people are. I have to hear Fox news every day, and hear comments from conservatives every day about how everything is going to hell in a hand basket and only the Republican party can save them. It's becoming clear that all this is just galvanizing the core. They think they are being repressed, they think there is a war against Christianity (which is funny since the Republican party is perhaps the most polar opposite of the 4 larger parties, and certainly of the two majors, to the teachings of Jesus) and only Republicans will help stop that war. Their churches are telling them there is a war against Christians and how they are being repressed and to vote Republican to save them. These people, once they can no longer deny that the climate is warming and is man made, will just point how it is the end times and continue to ignore it, because Jesus is coming soon anyhow. It's like that cartoon where the rich man takes 99 of the 100 cookies, the middle class guy takes one and the poor guy has just crumbs and the rich man warns the middle class guy to watch out, that the poor guy wants his cookie, and rather than be mad at the guy who took 99 of the cookies, he actually gets mad at the poor guy for wanting one. They don't care that a rich man fires over 1000 people and keeps everyone else at minimum for 4 years without raises so he can have a jet, they see those minimum wage workers and the people he fired as the enemy. They honestly believe the big corporate media machine is the "liberal media", disregarding the fact they are very much interested in keeping the status qua going, rather than expose the truth of growing income gap in this country. By 2016 most people will have forgotten the shutdown and those that remember it won't remember it is the Republican's fault, yes, the progressives will remember, but the conservatives blame the Democrats, liberals and progressives anyhow, and the rest won't care by then. The Fox News watchers, Rush listeners are just more solidly believing now that everything is the fault of the poor and the needy and the liberals, Democrats and progressives that want to help them.

TLDR: Those seeing the end of the Republican party, must not be around the hard core enough to see how brainwashed they are by Fox, Rush and their churches. All this just solidifies their anger.

How to Buy a New Car Without Getting Screwed

artician says...

All this is great info. The best piece of advice the guy gives here, hands down, is: "don't rush". Everything else kind of follows afterward.
Proceed slowly, do research, and compare prices. I would generally call or walk into a place and say "I have this model for this price from this dealer. Can you beat it?" and 9/10 times they would, despite the fact that I would start the bidding at the so-called "invoice" price.
Then I'd leave and call/go to the next dealer and repeat the process. (In person is much better). I would do this for weeks, and revisit the same dealers multiple times. It's a slow process, but eventually you find that you're pulling their game over their own eyes by writing your own contract every time you visit.
I've met a few hard-core dealers through this method though. Dealers who treat me that same way. "Not willing to play the game? No dice, go somewhere else". That's always a slap in the face, but they're few and far between. Hopefully they won't learn to network amongst one another any time soon.

Zimmerman's Lawyer's Opening Statement Is a Knock-Knock Joke

VoodooV says...

If they could prove without a doubt that it was self defense based on concrete evidence, they wouldn't be so desperate to paint Martin as a threatening gangsta thug.

It would be completely irrelevant if he was a sweet innocent boy or a hard core gangster. If they could prove it, it wouldn't matter

Atheist in the Bible Belt outs herself because she is MORAL

@shinyblurry-I know some Christians who can't stand to hear profanity of any kind, but say "dern" "gosh dern" "hell" etc., all variations of the vernacular....I would hope that God might have a sense of humor about such monkey behavior, after all, he's the one who spit in the mud and spun us on pottery wheels....

You atheists are about as easy to tolerate as the hard-core born-again, BTW-Yer all religious fanatics t'me!!

Designing a Transformer

artician jokingly says...

Exec #1: "So, this promo video is almost done. We need something edgy though. Something that speaks to the kids and kids-at-heart. What are they into today?"

Exec #2: "There's that one sound... Old video game music. Chiptunes! That's it!"

Exec #1: "That's that really annoying, scratchy music isn't it? Doesn't every single media source rely on that now?"

Exec #2: "We can push it further. You know... make it even edgier. It's supposed to be annoying, right? Let's use hard core chiptunes. Something so annoying it's like nails on a chalkboard! They will LOVE that!"

Exec #1: "DO IT!"

Louis CK - If God Came Back

My_design says...

Just to help clarify something here, Christian, Republican and hard core conservative is not necessarily an interchangeable label. Just like I would say that Democrat, Satanist or Atheist is not an interchangeable label. (I'm joking about the Satanist part, but you can't tag just a section with sarcasm)
You can be one and not the other. As for me... I'm the worlds only Republicratic CathoSataneist!

I think part of it must have been cut off. Christians are the most anti-pro-environmental people around, they are the ones most defending the giant corporations fight against the science of climate change. Fox News and the Republican party say it is junk, so they say it is all junk. Which I find odd for the same reason Louis CK notes in the video, if He was real and came back, He'd be upset that they didn't take better care of the Earth. They seemed to have forgotten how good stewardship works... it wouldn't matter if climate change science was BS, taking better care of the environment would be the right thing to do from a Biblical perspective, yet many if not most don't care. I've been told, "It doesn't matter anyhow as Jesus is coming again soon"... as if that is reason enough not to be a good steward of what He apparently gave them to watch over... It just boggles my mind how far disconnected from any sort of logical thought train that the vast majority of them seem to be on... and I don't mean where it contradicts the Bible, but where logic would follow the Bible and yet is still ignored as the vast right wing media machine tells them to...

I would think that if the Bible says to be a good steward of the Earth and the right wing media machine and Republican party says profits matter more, then I'd question the Republican party and right wing media machine. I would think that if Jesus said the rich won't inherit the kingdom of God, that we were to take care of the sick and the poor and needy, and the Republican party and right wing media machine said, no, we need to let the rich keep more of the money they made by not paying their workers a living wage and punish those working for them by taking away benefits that help them survive, then I would question that message... oh wait, I did. Which is why I changed from a Republican to a Libertarian (defending Fox News and bashing evolution and the whole bit) and eventually to the Liberal I am today. Everything the right wing folks do in the so called name of God is in contradiction to the teachings of the Bible... save perhaps abortion, the solution of which isn't laws restricting it, but affordable health care and education, two things they are against providing...

It's Louis CK. Wait for it.

noam chomsky-how climate change became a liberal hoax

RFlagg says...

I don't know if we'll ever get to an "I told you so" on the anthropogenic cause, but within 10 years or so I think even the hardest of hard core Fox News watchers will have to stop denying that climate change is happening. At that point they will still deny that giant multi-billion dollar corporations and massive farming of the rain forests have anything to do with it, they'll stick to their "it is a natural" cycle, feedback loops be damned, and continue saying "follow the money" when they point to who is saying it is man made, while ignoring their own advice and following the money to who is saying it isn't man made. Even if they do believe it man made, they'll say it won't matter as a large number of the deniers are evangelicals who say Jesus is coming again soon and he'll whisk them away before it gets too bad. I know because I've heard them say this very line, they use this line to say it doesn't matter who somebody votes for as well, though they still follow Fox and vote as the Republican right tells them to vote... Anyhow I think part of the problem is a lack of basic understanding of science, not understanding what a theory is and how it comes about, and the fact it got politicized (and unfortunately for those of us who accept the scientific facts, Gore may have done more harm than good by being a bit more alarmist in some areas and mis-representing some facts for the deniers to point to and say see the whole thing is false). I used to be a skeptic, but then I followed the research trail back on both sides, saw who was saying what exactly, and it became clear that we are screwed...

TLDR: They may come to accept climate change is happening, but still won't accept that humans have much if anything to do with it.

Superstorm Sandy is another example of society's march past the greenhouse tipping-point like the lemmings that we are. I laid it our in arguments in this video, where I was vehemently opposed by doubt-fuelled, fear monger, climate change deniers:

We're so close to that "I told you so" moment. By that time unfortunately, the methane feedback loop will probably be well under way.

David Silverman on "The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum"

VoodooV says...

You just described one of the biggest problems with religion in general. You ask a 1000 people who claim to be Christian to describe god and what they feel god is about and what god stands for and how you live a christian life and you'll get a 1000 different answers and 1000 different definitions of god and I'm sure many of them will conflict. And every one of them will believe their way is right and any other way is wrong.

Everyone..from the abortion clinic bombers and hard core evangelists and fundies to the most moderate liberal believer...they all get to claim a shared belief for some reason..they all get used as a demographic to intimidate people into believing that their beliefs are the majority when in reality it's a lot more fractured. There are no true believers, because no one can definitively prove that there is one true way.

>> ^RadHazG:
Yes but Santorum equating being gay to bestiality isn't a similar treatment? Spare us your ignorant ranting you two, the Catholic church has done nearly to the same thing to those it opposes over the years. Have some of your own medicine for a change.

I don't like this whole "The Catholic Church" distinction. To me it's like when people blame America when they're really talking about just the government. The Catholic Church is a misnomer in my opinion that doesn't represent the majority of Catholics let alone it's churches and their individual leaderships.
