Reza Aslan: US War on Terror 'Validated' Jihadists

Farhad2000 says...

QM again attempts to relate WW2 with GWOT, never mind that one was a war against states bent on world domination fought on a global scale with multiple allies.

While the other is a war on abstract concepts like 'terror' and 'evil', with a few international allies, which has no end game and no objective other then ending 'evil' allowing for continuous warfare and aggression using the terror misnomer.

I believe QM is desperately needed in the front lines to tell the US troops who exactly is a jihadist throat slitter, an insurgent, freedom fighter, mujaheddin or a northern alliance soldier. This would be invaluable.

The Palestinian attacks are directly a result of Israel actions over 60 years.

And whats with the straw men arguments? Moral relativists? What next are you going to call Reza a liberal? LOL stop trying to package someones ideas into a format that takes away from the point they are trying to make.

Yup. I'm embarrassed. I always mess that one up.

Actually, the service ribbon I have on the avatar already is the GWOT Expeditionary ribbon and the one in your photo is the regular GWOT Service ribbon.

Raven, here is a suggestion for an avatar. I like what you have there, but I thought it should have the GWOT expeditionary ribbon instead of the regular GWOT. Any moron in the military gets the GWOT, but you have to actually go somewhere and earn the GWOTE. Also, I thought the combat action ribbon would be good.
(p.s. - they are in order of precedence)

If anyone is interested... (Waronterror Talk Post)

HorrorShow up for Grabs! (Sift Talk Post)

raven says...

Well Lucky, its as I outlined in the other thread, I will be limiting this channel to the War on Terror, meaning this current one, that the US (and allies) are fighting in multiple fronts, like Iraq and Afghanistan, but also covertly and on our own soil. The content will pretty much be like that of my playlists Mess-O-Potamia & Vids from the Front. I mean, I know that there are other wars, but I think given just how MANY of vids have been posted related to just this one, that a distinct channel for this issue is warranted.

I want to use this channel to not only catalog vids dealing with current actions and life on the front, but also provide a context for the conflict in general. Hopefully the channeltalk section will become a rockin' forum for debates on the subject. I've also opened up a del.icio.us account to link to in the sidebar where recent news items can be linked to... all in all Lucky, I think this might be an opportunity to test out some of those new features you gave us with 3.0.

As for subdomain I'm not sure yet... Farhad and I have been running through some names and have a few ideas. The problem is that with the new 3.0 submit setup, the subdomain name is now so important because it appears when the user gets to choose which channels to append their submission to. Therefore, I want to make the content of the channel very clear when someone sees the subdomain. Some thoughts we have had so far:

war.videosift.com - probably not going to use, not specific enough

terror.videosift.com - also not specific enough

waronterror.videosift.com - maybe

globalwaronterror.videosift.com - too long? but am leaning towards this as it is the official military terminology for it.

gwot.videosift.com - would be a shortened form of that but I think its not apparent enough to the average poster, acronyms are too mysterious unless common parlance, ie. wtf

So, yeah, I don't know yet, anyone have any thoughts?

Okay Everyone, We Need To Have A Chat About Snuff & Iraq (Sift Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

One of my first posts to VS was Baghdad Raid which showed the armored column advance into Baghdad. It was blogged at the time for being a war video, it eventually passed Sifters consent into the fold because it highlighted a side of the war the media avoids at all costs.

The Iraq war and the GWOT as a whole has been sanitized and detached from the reality of events on the ground, most of the content that passes the sift with regards to the war would never be shown on News channels.

I believe the Sift can act as a venue for staying informed about the actual issues faced by the troops on the ground, allowing us as individuals to understand the situation better then what the press deems worthy for us to know.

BBC reported WTC7 Collapse while it was still standing!!

joedirt says...

WTF RickE? You don't get it. There didn't need to be more intel sharing.. They already knew. Heck they provided the 1993 WTC bombers with the explosives (and a map where to place, oops they didn't follow directions).

The spying on citizens, habeas, etc. has nothing to do with intel sharing between police and federal spooks. It has to do with 9/11 as an excuse to implement total ChoicePoint (tm) analysis to citizens. Fully database every aspect of your life, your spending, money, phone calls, emails, etc. Everything. It has nothing to do with GWOT.

Look, check this out. ChoicePoint was given exclusive rights to overseas communication in exchange for sharing intel with FBI/CIA when? The US military has been studing Total Urban Theatre Command and Control since when? There is hardly a new technology they are developing that works in a desert or thrid world where humans are the only thing worth targeting, cause the rest is rubble, sand, and worthless. Collateral Damage is meaningless.

Ask yourself this. If they willingly, and knowingly allowed the 1993 WTC attack to take place.. THEN?
The conspiracy theory is that they were involved with and passed information and explosives to Pakistanis in 1993, but in 2001... all the sudden had NO IDEA..
("Tapes Depict Proposal to Thwart Bomb Used in Trade Center Blast", New York Times, p. Section A, Page 1, Column 4.)

So, starting from that foundation, you have a few questions. Silverstein exclusive contract to own the WTC complex. His insurance policy. Bush brother running security at WTC complex. Bush's brother contract ends on guess when. O'Neil assigned to security in WTC on guess when. WTC7 falls completely on it's foot print. Heck towers 1 & 2 fall almost in their own foot print. All the convient "drills" on 9/11 the FEMA pre-set up bunker. No one goes to the emergency command bunker set up in WTC7.

How do you ignore all the stock shenanigans. Have they been investigated? Clearly from the Puts people KNEW ahead of time. Why not investigate who they were. (ex-CIA directors?)

The conspiracy is that people can ignore all the details of the story for the simple Nazi-Germany concept of when you lie to the mass, lie big.

You don't seem to understand what it means to maintain a website, the webmaster, i.e. individual who has the website maintains it. You don't seem to have a technical understanding of this issue.

People already do pay for internet access, the proposed charge here is to also charge on the other side, not only charge for connecting into the network but also a charge for being part of the network that is connected into. Yes there is some cost associated with running a server, basically the cost of running a computer, in theory and PC connected to the internet can be used as server, this cost is very low, hence how our present system is able to work and these corporations still make money.

The affront to democracy comes in squashing the voice of the poor and oppressed peoples in the world. The internet has provided a way for people to connect and organize and better monitor their democracy and have their voices heard, a means of escape from the filter of the corporate owned, overly commercialized propaganda system that has labeled itself 'the liberal media', pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, the billionaires who own it, its liberal, it says so. The affront to democracy is that this is a means by which those same forces seek to impose a similar filter and system of control onto the internet.

I'm sure theres some surface level of avarice, but really the issue runs deeper, sure it'll bring in some revenue, but nothing compared to the profits brought in year after year to those who manipulate the world by claiming legal ownership of it, who can only continue to do so, in so far as they are able to keep the people from uniting in one voice and proclaiming that the time has indeed come for the meek to inherit the earth.

And on another note, I'm sorry for your fear of terrorists, and I agree terrorism is to be despised, but all terrorism should be despised, and as it stands western governments through use of their militaries have killed far more people in the middle east, so objectively speaking you might want to broaden your definition of terrorism to a more objective one. I know you probably think something like but we're us and they're them, but if you think if they kill one of us we should be able to kill 2 of them, or 20 as is often the case, well put yourself in the shoes of them and follow this pattern for a while. Now reflect for a while upon the statement "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Thank you for your time.

WTF?!? Maybe Mr. Rollins, the noted constitutional scholar that he is, can explain to me how charging some one to maintain their website is an affront to democracy. Interestingly, this very same Mr. Rollins, who is so interested in our constitutional liberties, has done a number of anti-gun advertisements.

Joe is correct in just about everything that he says, culminating in -" There is a much greater malaise upon our nation, of which recent developments are only a symptom."-

Joe, you are absolutely right, however, you may not agree with why I think you are right. I think the malaise is in who we focus our attention on. Mr. Rollins likes to criticize rightwing Christians, not because the are the real problem, but because he personally dislikes them and they are easy targets. He is not likely to be shot by any of them. Just ask Andres Serrano.

However, if you are truly worried about you civil liberties you should keep your eyes elsewere, Maybe the GWOT that Mr. Rollins so casually mocks.
