Gundam Robot Yokohama, Japan Walk Testing!

Opinions in Japan of the White-Washing of Ghost in the Shell

SDGundamX says...

Basically, it's not an issue here because while anime characters are culturally Japanese (they speak Japanese, bow, eat with chopsticks, etc.), many times they also live in countries that are clearly NOT Japan. The ambiguous cultural status of the characters lets the writers put them in a variety of both familiar and exotic situations (i.e. going to a public bath vs. going to a high school prom,) which creates interesting tensions.

You see this a lot in anime like the Gundam series in which battles take place over several different countries on earth, as well as across space colonies, and yet everyone involved in the war, whether they have Japanese names or not, acts pretty damned Japanese all the time. Yet, the series incorporates non-Japanese elements as well. The building architecture of the Zeon space colonies, for example, is clearly European-inspired.

So Japanese people are used to the ambiguity of the "nationality" of their anime characters. I don't think Japanese people will have any problem with Scarlett Johansson unless the movie doesn't stay true to the character itself.

Now if a non-Japanese person had been cast to play Ryouma Sakamoto or some other real-life Japanese historical figure, I think there would be a pretty big reaction.

Should full promoting privileges be available to all non-probationary members? (User Poll by SDGundamX)

Retroboy says...

Thank you Gundam.

I would be interested in reading the rationale behind why a number of people voted "no".

And by the way, I was stopped from noting a video was region-blocked earlier tonight as well. There's no damn reason for that at all.

Honestly Sifty's getting close to the point of making me go full non-voting lurker mode.

Good stuff. The guy has several more animations on his channel. There's even one paying homage to the old kung fu action flicks, starring various Gundam models.

Japanese Dolphin Hunt Condemned By World

enoch says...

@chingalera
i wasnt addressing the validity of the racism warning.
i was addressing the hypocrisy gundam was pointing out.

do i think your commentary was racist?
no.
but thats between you and gundam and you both seem to be working it out (make out already).

but dont you find it interesting how people perceive other cultures? other societies? thats why i think this is a pretty cool discussion.

im no expert on japan so this all fascinates me.
i would like to know how you came to such a strong opinion about the japanese.

Japanese Dolphin Hunt Condemned By World

@chingalera
@SDGundamX
you guys should just make out and get it over with.

im with gundam on this.
its the definition of hypocrisy.

in fact i will even take it a step further.
did you guys know its a federal offense to take snapshots or video the giant corporate owned slaughter farms?

now companies like IBP like to site reasons such as "privacy" and "ownership" but the real reason isnt too hard to put together.if the american public ever saw how their cheeseburger came into existence the sales of beef and pork would plummet.

so while it may be disturbing to watch flipper getting corralled and mass executed, lets be at least honest with ourselves.

we view dolphins much like we view or cats and dogs.they are considered a "pet" class and not a "dinner" class.

the japanese do not.to them the dolphin is meat for dinner.

we would react the same to country fried lassie steaks and garfield goulosh.

now if we were talking how asia destroys the shark population JUST for their fins, then i think there would be a valid argument to be had.

but this is about dinner and our perspectives on certain animals.

what do you guys think?

*promote the discussion.

Del Toro casts Portal's Glados in "Pacific Rim" (Trailer)

EvilDeathBee says...

-Have you ever seen Godzilla? Evangelion's Angels (and the story) were a little more complicated than simply "giant monsters sent to destroy mankind". From this trailer we don't know what these monsters are or came from, they could just be random monsters like in The Mist.
-There were NO giant robots in Evangelion
-From this trailer, these robots are remote controlled, they are not inside them. Even if they were, ever heard of Battletech/Mech Warrior (they also use neural links)? Robotech/Macross? Gundam?

I was basing this off observations from this trailer. Nothing here says "Evangelion" to me apart from a few vague similarities that are not unique to Eva

EMPIRE said:

Seriously?

Let's see.
- Giant monsters sent to destroy mankind (at least that's what they say in the trailer)
- Giant Robots controlled by people inside
- Giant Robots controlled by people inside with "neural links"
- Giant Robots each constructed by Japan, US, and Germany (that's not in the trailer I know, but i read it somewhere)

A Word to Rioting Muslims

draak13 says...

Thanks, Gundam. It helps to hear that sometimes!

>> ^SDGundamX:

Why is this getting upvoted?
To condemn the entire religion is extremely juvenile; the majority of the people in this religion are not the extremists who are rioting in the streets.
Instead of condemning entire religions, it'd be much more accurate to condemn religious fundamentalism or extremism. The majority of muslim people condemn these violent actions.

You've been registered since 2007, so surely you must know that there exists a segment of Sifters who are hardened Islamophobes (though they hate being called that). You'll find lots of Condel's videos (and other anti-Islam videos as well) have been Sifted. I used to comment on them about the absurdity of condemning a religion (which, like Christianity, has numerous different sects and faction and is practiced by people with widely differing cultural and educational backgrounds, not to mention political motivations) based on the actions of some of its members but I mostly got shouted down as a "cultural apologist/relativist."
I will say that the frequency with which these types of videos get submitted and Sifted has decreased over the years, which seems to indicate that other Sifters got as sick of the rhetoric as I was.

japan builds its first real mech - kuratas

Auger8 says...

Ya I can't tell if it's an elaborate fake, or if the video is just set in that strange Japanese humor I don't always get. Some of it looks very real and some of it is just too campy to be true. If it is real it seems like a very early prototype. @spoco2 is right about a few things though the OS shown in the video is a fake it was CGI for sure. And some of it just seemed very unfinished and very rough around the edges to be a complete product. Not to mention the weapons sanctions for selling something like that overseas.

Trust me I want this to be real soooo bad and I think if anyone will pull it off first it will be the Japanese. They have a morbid obsession with Gundam's but this just reeks of a fake to me.

Epic Stop Motion (Gundam) Battle

jmd says...

It seems to be one of the older original gundam series before they became super powered up.

A few things irk me on this animation though.

1) manual cocking of the guns.. not one but several of the weapons used here seem to have manual rod latches... WHY?! Gundam weapons should have zero problems having their internal bullet feeding mechanism be totally automatic. It isn't super mario 3 where the world of humans was made smaller, the guns are bigger, much bigger.

2) No radio communication? in the anime series they never seemed to be able to shut up.

3) Wide spread shots during air combat made bullet dodging convincing in the anime, but not so much on the ground. Gundams were usually forced to absorb a shot or two before quickly dispatching mobile armors, not play neo and dodge everything with matrix like reflexes.
