Zero Punctuation: Grand Theft Auto 5

direpickle says...

He made it clear in the GTA4 review that he prefers the SR games. Why do you expect him to suddenly swing back the other way?

Zero Punctuation is no longer relevant or funny to me.

And yes, Zero Punctuation shits all over most games, but he usually says "good game" about genuinely good games. And GTA V is a genuinely good game.

GTA V 5-Star Police Chase

Dumdeedum says...

As I recall in GTA 3, VC & SA, one and two stars was police cars chasing you, three stars was car roadblocks, four stars was SWAT van roadblocks, five stars was FBI, and six stars was military truck roadblocks and tanks. So yeah, looks like things might be different this time round.

Personally I'm just glad it's not like GTA4 where you couldn't have epic chases because all the cars handled like boats and you died almost instantly on foot.

Saints Row: The Third - Exclusive Gameplay Trailer

KnivesOut says...

GTA4 was pretty fun, but it just didn't feel like a GTA game, with the lack of gangs, territories, drive-by's, etc. San Andreas was the last GTA game, imo.

I never played SR1&2, because the reviews were so poor, but this looks really good. I'm looking forward to it.

GTA4 Carmageddon 3

Sarzy says...

>> ^jmd:

cause no other game before carmageddon features running over pedestrians and smashing into other opponents cars for points, amirite?

True, it wasn't the first game with that concept -- but it was one of the first to do a really good job of allowing you to drive around wherever you want and cause mayhem in an open, 3D city. It was the first game of its type that I played, but obviously I haven't played every game in existence so it's possible that there was some smaller game that came out before it with similar gameplay.

Dara O'Briain on videogames

RadHazG says...

I really like this guys comedy and generally speaking I try to see things from the speakers PoV but in this case I honestly think this has to be a parody. If nothing else because of his "rant" about GTA4 and driving in traffic and whatnot. Yes you have to slow down for the tollbooth (not really the cops are easy to shake from there) but NOBODY could be dumb enough to actually follow the traffic patterns there when you can just drive around everything. I refuse to believe mr. o brian is really that dumb so I have to assume this is just one big joke designed to draw out the folks who are going to rail against him and what a "noob" he must be. Almost got me too.

Is this the best, or the worst game ever?

Japanese Hentai video game "Real Kanojo" benchmark and demo

ReverendTed says...

The argument isn't that "Little Miss Pixels" here is being objectified, but rather that it's an example of the broader objectification of women.

The demo itself suggests an attitude that women are little more than playthings to be ogled and fondled, which is objectification.

The rest of your argument is a straw man based on your own suggestion that we must accept Jigglyjugs here as "real" because we must have a specific individual in mind to objectify, which is not the case. She plainly represents the image of a woman as a plaything.

GTA4 does glorify violence (and is a delightful escapist romp for it), and this demo does embody the objectification of women. Neither need be perceived as "real" for that to be true.

To put it another way - your own argument states that this simulation is "an object".
It is an object...in the form of a woman. That's the ultimate form of objectification - they've created a "woman" who is an object.

Japanese Hentai video game "Real Kanojo" benchmark and demo

GeeSussFreeK says...

If this is objectification, then I don't even what to know what other games like GTA4 are in your mind. It isn't real, they are pixels. There are no real people like this simulated thing, just as Vice city isn't a real place and you didn't really kill those school children. Game over man, game over.

Simulations can not, by their very nature, be objectified because they are themselves actual objects, not complex figures of which we are denying their autonomy (because they don't have any!), or denying their subjectivity (as they don't have a subjective mind!). While we may comment on the type of person that plays this game, the game itself is not objectification, there are simply no real figures to objectify.

In short Fantasizing != Objectifying. If so, then people who play GTA4 are fucking murdering lunatics and people who play Black and White are blasphemous. You tread a slippy slope because you find the content objectionable to your tastes, but your inability to separate out fantastic from reality smacks of Jack Thompson.

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

NetRunner says...

I followed a similar path to JiggaJohnson, had a 2600, NES, SNES. After that I mostly ignored consoles, preferring PC games.

That lasted for a long time, until the buzz around God of War got so loud even the PC people were saying stuff about it. I bought a PS2, and then got totally sucked into what consoles had morphed into 2 generations past the SNES.

Now I'm back to a more balanced diet of games. Some PC, some console, they've all got great stuff to offer.

If you're a big PC shooter fan, you're depriving yourself by refusing to take Halo or Gears of War for a spin (or at least their latest incarnations). If you liked KOTOR, you need to play Mass Effect. If you liked Diablo, you should play God of War. To think someone would call them self a gamer without having tried Metal Gear Solid and then subsequently declared that they love or hate it with a passion...seems wrong to me. You're missing out if you've never played GTA, especially GTA4.

If anything games for the PC have become something of a niche market, mostly populated with shooters, MMO's, and RTS's (and all the shooters but Crysis are on the consoles too).

I also think anyone who's into gaming should look into Brutal Legend, and seriously consider picking up a 360.
