Nuclear energy is terrible

ChaosEngine says...

Cool, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with @kir_mokum, he just didn't actually make any points.

I agree that nuclear weapons are not really an issue when it comes to building power plants. Personally, I think it's hypocritical in the extreme for the people with the nuclear weapons to tell others they can't have them. I'd much rather no-one had them.

"Germany has literally tons of the stuff just laying around"
Depends on what you mean by "lying around". No, it's not out in the open, but it is just "lying around" in the sense that they have shitloads of it (in one site alone they have nearly 126000 barrels) and they're not doing anything with it. Waste disposal *is* a serious issue with current nuclear technology.

As for deaths, I suppose what gets people about nuclear disasters is that other disasters tend to be more short term. From a media POV: if some people die in a coal mine, that's sad, but they were miners and it's over pretty quick, but dying kids from Chernobyl make great TV!

I tend to agree that it's probably safer in the long run.

Sorry to jump the thread here; not sure if dubious is the word either, but pretty amateur and more fear mongering with no supporting data.

House of Cardinals

RFlagg says...

Spoof of House of Cards. Very great TV show staring Kevin Spacey on Netflix. Kevin plays the House Majority Whip, a Representative from Georgia who was supposed to become the Secretary of State when the President won, but got passed over, the show follows him, lots of breaking the fourth wall... amazing show. Worth the price of Netflix alone. That said, yeah, a description should have been put in...

Hatin' On The Westboro Baptist Church

xxovercastxx says...

Maybe we'll see a little War of Kings as this pile of inbreds splits into competing factions vying for control of the WBC empire.

That could make for some great TV. Time to send Louis Theroux back for a third visit.

Fred Phelps is not long for this earth. Shirley Phelps is not getting any younger either.

Once those guys are shuffled off this mortal coil and/or arrested, I suspect the church will fracture and die.

Black Mirror -- The National Anthem [Season 1, Episode 1]

Hybrid says...

The whole Black Mirror series was superb. With this particular one however, you could argue that the joke is actually on the viewer... that the viewer will watch quite literally anything if it is presented in a formulaic manner. I can imagine Charlie Brooker doing exactly this. But that aside, it's still great TV

He isn't a redneck per se, he's an Aussie... sure, our version of a redneck... but still, we'd probably call him a yobbo...

What I love about this, is the common thing of people having bugger all money, living in shitholes, not getting ahead in life... but be buggered if they aren't going to have a huge, stinking great tv! oh, sure, they need to kinda vaguely balance it on a couple of things... but dangit, they can watch their Current Affairs or Today Tonight (two f*ck awful pretend 'news' shows here in Aus) on a big screen.

It makes me sad.

But him hitting his tv with a baseball bat make me smile

But thinking that he will now be an ambassador for my country while this makes the rounds of the interwebs... that makes me sad

Alton Brown - Shun Knives

legacy0100 says...

Just a chatter:

He's a great TV personality and a cook, but I'm not sure he qualify as a good chef. He's knowledge of ingredients and cooking techniques are something to be reckoned with, but he does has some of the weirdest recipes to offer. Which means they're mainly for his palates, and not so much for the others.

Yeah he may have a more sensitive palate than your average TV viewer, but then how come all other great chefs out there offer recipes that everyone enjoys? Perhaps Alton's palates are bit quirky?
