Fmr. McCain Economic Adviser: Raise the Debt Ceiling!

NetRunner says...

@heropsycho, I wasn't saying the Bush Tax Cuts alone would do it, I was saying just letting existing law play out would:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/jun/22/a-do-nothing-congress-could-solve-deficit-woes-cbo/

That includes spending cuts, and more taxes going up than just the Bush tax cuts disappearing.

None of that is pretty, but it's just one more layer of things I'm annoyed about with this whole debt ceiling hullabaloo. The budget isn't really unbalanced.

People struck "grand bargains" in the past that would raise taxes, cut spending, and balanced the budget. Why hasn't that happened? Because future Congresses kept passing laws to delay or reverse those elements of the balanced budget agreements of the past each year.

That's why I think all this BS about "shared sacrifice" is going nowhere. They didn't do entitlement cuts in the past because they're political suicide. They still are today. The reason they haven't raised taxes is because wealthy people grease an awful lot of palms in Washington, not because raising taxes on millionaires is unpopular, even amongst Republican voters. You'd have to permanently change those things for a mix of entitlement cuts and tax increases to be the way we balance the budget over the long haul.

Health care reform is the real solution, and like I mentioned before, we already did that.

Secular World View? - It's Simple Really (Science Talk Post)

GenjiKilpatrick says...

@SDGundamX

Everything that humans do that isn't provided directly thru our biology is a cultural system.

Science and Religion are both results of cultural evolution.

Before scientific journals and 150 page papers on nucleotides came about, peer review was this:
"Hey man! I discovered this new way to get girls to show up at our parties! Gin rummy & Pinochle!"

'WTF dude, I know for a fact that the only girls that play pinochle are 65 year old ladies. That method will never work'

You are a scientist from birth. Science therefore is essential.
You are not religious from birth. Religion therefore is not.
~~~
To clarify, I said religion & science are geared toward "understanding the universe".
I never said "understanding the physical world".
That was your straw-man so you could talk about some metaphysical gobbledygook I guess.
But you're in even worse footing there because metaphysical things can't be proven.
Religion is useless gobbledygook and serves no purpose in a society that has advanced beyond the need for it.
~~~
Here, I'll use the example how your diet evolved to provide more support for this position.

Humans are carnivorous because early hominids found animal protein - meat - beneficial because it promoted brain & muscle growth.

Eating meat was essential because without it, early human population would have been to weak & stupid to survive.

In 2011, there is absolutely need to consume meat.

We have discovered numerous combinations of plants - like rice & beans - that provided complete proteins and some that provide all essential amino acids outright, like soybeans.

Eating meat nowadays involves massive amounts of resources - land, water, crops - not to mention all the harmful effects like - deforestation, infectious outbreaks, & increased chronic or "lifestyle" diseases like grease encrusted heart muscles.

Consuming meat - like practicing religion - is unnecessary and destructive to our environment.
You only continue to engage in it because of ignorance, propaganda and emotional attachment.
~~~
Sooo, you can keep flappin' your gums.
But until you submit some evidence and not just personal feelings..
This sift talk will continue to head nowhere very quickly
Mechanical Computer - 1953
MarineGunrock says...
Actually, the fire control rooms had more than 20 people all operating in a room the size of a small McDonald's dining area. I looked for pictures, but in the USS North Carolina, they have silhouettes of the operators huddles around the computers and it's mind-boggling how they got it all done. Ah, here it is: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_KuYLyRjiSR8/SfXkK4QJYEI/AAAAAAAAFbQ/egYSw3kQhfo/DSC_2338.JPG
>> ^spawnflagger:
Really fascinating videos, I watched all 7 parts. I wonder how much the whole computer weighed?
Seems like it would be a reliable device, as long as it's well greased, and the 3+ operators are well trained.
Of course nowadays a single chip smaller than a fingernail could achieve equal results with 0 operators, but an electronic computer in 1953 would have been much larger and much less reliable (transistor tubes tend to burn out) and required more energy than equivalent to feeding a few humans.
Cenk Uygur: Why Isn't Wall Street In Jail
Corruption is the grease of democracy, and taxocrats are some of the biggest recipients of Wall Street money.
Here's why not to worry about it: when revolutionaries take over, they turn into the exact types they overthrew. It's a constant of history.
You can't spell apathetic without 'pathetic'... ; )
Warpublicans aren't much better in recent history.
Perhaps you're both right. We'll need to find some way around this if we can eventually manage to institute real reform. We need to somehow separate the financial system from our political system.
Proposed commercial for new product.
Woman: "Hey, you got your bacon in my cake"
Man: "Hey, you got your cake on my bacon"
Announcer: "Bacon Cake, two great tastes that taste great together."
Wow, this is old, but...
You just know that they would put a make out scene right after that; except my scene has two girls making out in bacon grease, eating cake.
I'm sure that's what we all envisioned, or meant to, anyway...
Foreclosures on People Who Never Missed a Payment
Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...
These borrowers knowingly made bad loans to people who didn't understand the contract
In the early 90s the banks were arguing AGAINST repealing Glass-Stegall. Politicians partnered with some big finaincal houses like AIG and started accusing mid-size & small banks of racism ala "red-lining" to grease the political skids for a repeal. In most instances there was no racism of any kind. Banks simply did not give loans to people that couldn't afford them. But poor, urban areas had higher percentages of minority populations - and so out whips the race card...
I lived in the 70s and 80s. I know how hard it was to get even a 30-year loan in those days. But literally overnight banks had to start giving out loans to people who traditionally would not qualify. Instead of making money on the interest of the LOAN, banks were expected to make profit by bundling & selling the mortgage. The government promise was that if things went sour on the borrower end, Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae would paper it over. It worked fine for about a decade. But you can't sustain a market when your only customers are poor people in homes they can't afford and property flippers taking out 2+ extra mortgages more than they can realistically pay for.
The bank's job isn't to be your daddy, or to lecture you about whether you should or shouldn't get a loan. If a person walks into a bank, then as long as they qualify under the rules which are established by government then the bank doesn't have much choice. When people qualify, the bank issues the loan or they open themselves to discrimination lawsuits. It's a Catch-22.
Your outrage should more properly be targeted at the government. Have them re-institute Glass-Stegall. Force them to tighten up the requirements on who can/can't get a loan. Make it so people who shouldn't get loans CAN'T get them and that banks aren't allowed to do it. Join the rest of us racist, evil, red-lining conservatives who think loans should only be given to those who can actually afford to pay them off. But prepare yourself for a tongue-lashing from every neo-liberal leftist group under the sun, because clearly your bean-counting logic is pure neo-con white hatred, right? Oh - and especially prepare yourself to get excoriated by guys like Barney Frank who was one of the principle engineers of this whole "UFFOWDABLE HOWSEING!" mess.
