Should we distinguish between NSFW videos vs. GRAPHIC videos? A vote to... (User Poll by blankfist)

RedSky says...

I almost feel like you'd be better off scraping NSFW altogether and having three icons for:

1. graphic/violence

2. language

3. nudity/sexuality

They'd be intuitive to the Videosift layman, more informative that what we have now, and are very easily interpretable with the kind of cartoon/symbol icons that TV ratings use. Thematically it would also gel with a video/clip site much better.

Sniper Kills in Thailand Protests

Yea, I don't feel like there is enough warning on this video to get the viewer ready for what it contains.

This need more than an ambiguous NSFW tag, and a warning of graphic violence. Honestly.

So more character development would have been achieved by more scalping? I don't think so. Tarantino's approach of cutting between major characters to tell the story is one he used to great effect in Pulp Fiction, but this time with fewer characters. Their stories intersect and build to the finale. And I believe the thread tying it all together was killing Nazis - specifically Hitler.

Unfortunately, I don't see how your arguments support your final assessment of the film being pretentious, and I tend to agree with Sarzy about trite criticisms and default positions with regard to Tarantino. I really think he is the most ambitious and creative director of the modern era, and I'm so glad to see he hasn't disappeared completely up his own arse.

Having read your take before going to see it last night, I expected hardly any violence and action. I was instead surprised by how much graphic violence and murder there was. I can't guess as to how many deaths would have satisfied you.

WICKED CITY-original japanese trailer-(very graphic)

Sagemind says...

I have yet to completely understand Japanese culture - Their graphic violence and sexually graphic content is is unparalleled but they still blur out and sensor their pornographic content (even in animation). It's like they have no boundaries on anything whatsoever except penetration, and even then, they have it, they just blur it out...
I'm not a watcher of animated porn, but to deny that I have ever come across it would be silly.

How Iranian Police Deal with a Suspect (Graphic Violence)

bcglorf says...

^That's too broad a statement. I think it's more accurate to say there are cops everywhere have the potential to do the same.
But the point is true; the one thing all cops have in common is they're human.

The other difference is that it is systematic in Iran. The beatings like this are occurring only on a small scale as a warning of what is to come if the protests don't stop.

The Ayatollah has already threatened to begin cracking down on all protests with 'revolutionary force'. This is, unfortunately not an isolated incident, but punishment and intimidation meant to serve as an object lesson to all the other protesters.

First off I love extreme and prolonged graphic violence, just for the record. This film has much to offer that is not in the trailer. It is about love and loss and innocence and acceptance and being an outsider. I found it fully enjoyable. So I guess I buy this dross.

Well I found that trailer revolting, and on reading many reviews of the film, it would seem it's an absolute snorefest up until that end bit where the woman is disfigured in ridiculously graphic detail.

I love a good horror film, but showing horrendous disfigurement like this does absolutely nothing at all for me, and I wonder about the people who enjoy such extreme and prolonged graphic violence towards another.

I just went to the website of the production company and they seem to make cheap, terribly made ripoff film after ripoff film:
SUNDAY SCHOOL MUSICAL - High School Musical
18 YEAR OLD VIRGIN - American Pie et al
AVH: ALIEN VS HUNTER - Alien vs Predator
UNIVERSAL SOLDIERS - Universal Soldier (My GOD, how close can you get?)
ALLAN QUATERMAIN AND THE TEMPLE OF SKULLS - Do I even need to say?
THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED - The day the earth stood still
DA VINCI TREASURE - The Da Vinci Code
100 MILLION BC - Godzilla
PIRATES OF TREASURE ISLAND - Oh come on!
SNAKES ON A TRAIN - Puuuhlease!
TRANSMORPHERS - MAKE IT STOP NOW!!!!!

Their covers are usually a direct ripoff, they get B/C grade actors (Lorenzo Lamas anyone?)

Truly a studio to avoid. Who the hell actually hires/buys this dross?

I won't play discuss-return tag with you.

But I still think this video doesn't belong in light of the other video being discarded.

This really disturbs me. I almost didn't upvote it. If the video of a crash which consequently killed seven people is unacceptable, how is this any better.

It's an uncomfortable video to watch, certainly (which is why I decided not to Sift it a few days ago), but there's no way it breeches any rules (i.e., it's not snuff if no one died).

NSFW is an American thing. Those wacky puritan legacy of guilt and shame is slow to crumble. Basically, NSFW includes any kind of swearing, graphic violence or sexual themes. I always forget the tag, because the people I work with don't give a shit, but I guess it's a different story with the cubical set.
I'd be curious to know if NSFW has any meaning outside of the US, or if you think we are just a country full of

you are, in general. I find these labels pointless. I understand some find them useful so I don't mind if they are there - when I do use them, I use them with you lot in mind. and I don't like censorship. those f*****g bleeps on your tv are annoying to say the least
