How Easy it is to Buy a AR-15 in South Carolina

newtboy jokingly says...

I've whacked over 200 moles in the last decade.
Do I still have moles, yes, but I have 200 fewer moles than if I whacked none!
(Ok, full disclosure, they're really gophers, but whack-a-gopher doesn't have the same ring to it)

heropsycho said:

Nope.

The only effective way is to practically eliminate the prevalence of guns beyond say a hunting rifle across the general population. Everything else is wack-a-mole, and won't solve the problem.

I'm a political moderate, and I generally gravitate towards moderate "common sense" effective regulations when needed. I don't see any point in regulations that don't do any good.

Universal background checks, banning assault rifles, three day waiting periods, banning bump stocks, stopping people who have been evaluated with psychiatric problems, all of it will insignificantly reduce gun violence.

I just don't see a way forward on this issue because what's needed is so politically impossible when people start declaring armed insurrection when a Democrat gets elected President.

Liberal Redneck - Virginia is for Lovers, not Nazis

enoch says...

@ChaosEngine

i am trying to unpack your comment.

so you AGREE that attacking people you disagree with ideologically is wrong, but only if they are not self-identified nazis?

because 90 years ago these guys kinda cornered the market in nazism? and well..we don't wanna see a repeat of THAT now do we? so let's punch them in the face....

and that somehow punching them in the face will somehow magically halt any further encroachment of those dirty nazis!!!!

because it was so effective in the 1930's?

ok..how about this...

how about we daydream about cockpunching these knuckleheads, because it brings a smile to our faces but NOT actually punch them?

instead...we allow these cunts..who came to this gig LOOKING for a fight..to bluster and foam at the mouth.to spew their vile and vulgar message of racism dressed up as nationalistic pride,so EVERYONE can see.

and i bet you dollars to donuts one of them knuckledragging retards, who came all gussied up for a rumble...is gonna make a mistake...that inbreeder is gonna just HAVE to use his home made mace,or his shiny new gopher poker on someone...

probably one of dem darn "libtards".

and in this age of cell phone vigilantism, this is gonna get caught on video, posted to youtube and KABOOM!

white nationalist racist nazi party is forced back underground.

because you CANNOT fight fascism with a different flavor of fascism.

fascism is fascism yo,just because one flavor may taste better to your buds don't change that very simple truth.

the problem in this setting is you have TWO groups who are addicted to identity politics, and BOTH are convinced of their own righteousness, and BOTH groups suffer from a horrid case of groupthink.

and this ideological stand has them both certain of their righteousness, and this gives them a moral certitude that violence is an acceptable answer.

because they are the righteous.

sound familiar?

you mentioned 100 years ago,
i will match your 100 years and counter with the previous 5,000.

ideology homie..
the cancer of the deluded.
just ask any fundamentalist christian,or muslim,or jew.....

they will be perfectly happy to tell you how RIGHT they are,and how WRONG you are.

and this shit?
^ this psycho shit?
this is just a puss pocket, erupting from the internal corruption feeding on my countries soul.

economic collapse ain't gonna bring my country down.
nope..
it is gonna be the polarized politics that finally takes this country out.

i hate this..i seriously hate this...

Hiker Followed By Bears

newtboy says...

I'm happy that I have run into bears here. It makes me feel like our area isn't as devoid of wildlife as many places are.
We have all those listed, plus skunks, possums, gophers, salamanders, elk, and yes, bears. Once I even saw a porcupine walking down the highway.
Twice I've had bears cross a river less than 50 ft from me while I was fishing just blocks from home, and before I built my fence they ravaged my apple trees every year with the elk and deer.
It's still a possibility that a bear is what paralyzed our puppy in our yard last June. We never found out what happened to her, and she's not talking, but she is up and walking.

I hope I never run into bears in my rural area! I only had seen birds, coyotes, dogs, humans, snakes, butterflies, (w/rabbit)s, horses, bun(nie)s, cat (just one), squirrels, raccoon, etc.

Introducing FarmBot Genesis

eoe says...

All you haters should maybe learn to code and help them out. It's open source, after all.

I think this is a great idea that will only get better as people start tinkering with it. I see great ways that you could use machine-learning or even just expert advice to know exactly what food you can grow in your conditions (including gophers and chipmunks).

All technology starts out impractical because it's new, expensive, and buggy. Give it a few years, and there will be cheap as prefab ones that do tons of cool things.

Buncha haters (except @dag and @siftbot).

Removing a 40 Metre tree with a chainsaw and some rope

newtboy says...

Not at all. I hate seeing nice trees cut down as well.

I would guess they took it down because of the HUGE crack in a large branch that you can see at the start of the video.....oh...I just read the description where they explain EXACTLY why they took it down, it was dropping branches after a lightning strike, almost hitting someone. That likely means the trunk was also weakened, and it was certainly close enough to take out that house.

I can relate. I (sadly) took down a 30-40 meter Douglas Fir tree in my yard a few years back. It's still painful to think about. My tree had grown too tall, and had a weakened root system because it was growing sideways out of a small hill, and had massive gopher activity all around it. All the surrounding trees on other properties were cut well before we moved here, so it was also exposed to full wind. I was terrified that it was going to come down through my bedroom and kill the wife and myself, or through a neighbors house, so we had it cut. I've spent the nearly 3 years since then digging out the root ball (which WAS as weakened as I had thought) and turning the hole into a large pond. I still hate that we had to kill the tree, but it was a safety issue. At least I have firewood for years to come, and a pond.

Am I the only only one who thinks this sad? Why did they cut down such a magnificent tree?

Septic Vacuum Tank Truck Implosion

I need to buy a used one of these trucks to use as a gopher vacuum. I think that would finally do the job that nothing else has yet.

Backyard Farmers

newtboy says...

I do this on a much smaller scale. I'm still just at the self sufficient level with any surplus being given away.
I'm going to build one of those germination boxes in my greenhouse, then I can start the garden in March. Great way to do it.
I wish he had given us a genius method for gopher eradication. I bet he knows one.

Hey bud,
I'm doing well, thanks for asking. How about you?
I'm still fighting the good fight in the gopher wars. I'm still digging out my 'pond'. We picked and juiced apples last weekend, about 20 gallons worth. We're still in a terrible drought (N Cali) and my lawn is dead....and full of gopher holes.
Other than that, there's not much to report from here.
I hope all is well with you
