2 Live Crew - Fuck Martinez

Throbbin says...

From Wikipedia:

As Nasty As They Wanna Be and "Me So Horny" controversy
The group released their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be in 1989, which also became the group's most successful album, largely because of the single "Me So Horny", which was popular in spite of little radio rotation, thanks, in part, to prevalent play on MTV. The song was based on a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and took a sample from Mass Production's Firecracker. This album was also produced by Mr. Mixx.
The American Family Association did not think the presence of a "Parental Advisory" sticker was enough to adequately warn listeners of what was inside the case. Jack Thompson, a lawyer affiliated with the AFA, met with Florida Governor Bob Martinez and convinced him to look into the album to see if it met the legal classification of obscene. In 1990 action was taken at the local level and Nick Navarro, Broward County sheriff received a ruling from judge Mel Grossman that probable cause for obscenity violations existed.[2]
Navarro warned record store owners that selling the album may be prosecutable. 2 Live Crew then filed a suit against Navarro. That June, Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled against the album, declaring it obscene and illegal to sell. Charles Freeman, a local retailer, was arrested two days later, after selling a copy to an undercover police officer. This was followed by the arrest of three members of 2 Live Crew after they performed some material from the album at a live performance held at the Futura Night Club in Hollywood Florida. They were acquitted soon after. In 1992, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit overturned the obscenity ruling from Jose Gonzales, and the Supreme Court of the United States refused to hear Broward County's appeal. A notable feature of the case was the distinguished literary critic and now Harvard University professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. as an expert witness on behalf of the defendants. He argued that the material that the county alleged was profane, actually had important roots in African-American vernacular, games, and literary traditions and should be protected.
As a result of the controversy, As Nasty As They Wanna Be sold over two million copies. It peaked at #29 on The Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A few other retailers were later arrested for selling it as well. Later hard rock band Van Halen sued over an uncleared sample of their song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" in the 2 Live Crew Song "The Fuck Shop". The publicity then continued when George Lucas, owner of the Star Wars universe, successfully sued Campbell for appropriating the name "Skywalker" for his record label, Luke Skywalker Records. Campbell changed his stage name to Luke (and changed the record label's name to Luke Records) and the group released an extremely political follow up album, Banned in the USA after obtaining permission to use an interpolation of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. 2 Live Crew paraphernalia with the Luke Skywalker or Skywalker logos are usually sought after as collector's items.

Senator imitates Ricky Ricardo in front of Sotomayor.

thepinky says...

Let's examine just how racist this is. The Senator made a pop culture reference to a very well known, heavily accented Cuban TV character while addressing a Puerto Rican woman. First of all, Desi Arnaz was awesome. My question is, are references to Ricky Ricardo inherently racist in nature? I've never heard them used that way, but I could be wrong and I'm ready to be corrected. I don't think that Ricardo was an ugly racial stereotype (I've only seen bits of the show, so I could be mistaken). He had an accent, but there is nothing wrong with that.

I would be worried if Coburn had quoted Speedy Gonzales or Tony Montana or Cheech or something.

Think about it. Is Coburn making any kind of derogatory statement about hispanic people in any way? I mean, really, it may have been kind of inappropriate to make a joke that called attention to her nationality and possibly drew a comparison between Sotomayor and Ricardo (if he even intended it that way), but just how racist was it? Not very. It makes you cringe a little bit inside, but is it really even derogatory?

I would venture to say that this really isn't a big deal and that the reaction is a classic example of our hypersensitivity to racial references of any kind.

I am willing to accept that I may be wrong about this, so if anyone wants to explain to me how this is racist, I'm all ears.

Waterboarding is not torture.
Also. The Sky Is Green And Grass Is Blue.

From Wiki. (yes not the de-facto in fact gathering but helpful and does state sources in this article)
Waterboarding is a form of torture that consists of immobilizing the victim on his or her back with the head inclined downwards, and then pouring water over the face and into the breathing passages. By forced suffocation and inhalation of water, the subject experiences drowning and is caused to believe they are about to die. It is considered a form of torture by legal experts.

Daily Show 4/20 - We Don't Torture

maximillian says...

The best way for America to protect its image is to take the moral high ground and condemn the act and those who did it. I am tired of our government not following through on accountability for wrong doings. I am fine with protecting president Bush from prosecution (although not right either but former presidents often did this), but we should go after Gonzales, Rove, and other masterminds of the CIA torture strategy.

At least prosecute them and then give them a presidential pardon. It would make Obama look bad of course. But we should do something that speaks to the world and to future generations that you cannot break our fundamental laws and principles. Obama just condemning the act then saying we need to move on is inadequate.

GITMO Guard "I Felt Ashamed Of What I Did"

volumptuous says...

^ I totally understand what you're saying. But I think the point here is that while "enhanced interrogation" was ordered from the very top, it was also stated again and again on television and elsewhere that the Geneva Convetion doesn't apply to "enemy combatants".

Many statements like that were tossed around from Gonzales on up to Bush himself. This created a systemic problem with detainee abuse, not just with interrogators, but at every level at GITMO.

This puzzle has many pieces of many different shapes and sizes.

Obama on Investigating Bush Crimes: "Need to Look Forward"

Farhad2000 says...

They said the same thing >> ^NetRunner:
Color me an optimist. Here's what I heard:

My general view when it comes to my Attorney General is: he is the people's lawyer -- Eric Holder has been nominated -- his job is to uphold the Constitution, and look out for the interests of the American people;

Color me unconvinced since this is the same thing said about Michael Mukasey when he got the USAG position after Alberto Gonzales.

His nomination was a circus of trying to figure out whether or not he thought water boarding constituted torture.

Introduced policies are far harder to over turn, politically even Obama's charisma couldn't cover a possible situation where someone says that Bush policies could have prevented a future attack. Thus there is a reluctance to dismantle them and accuse anyone retroactively of crimes.

Which only continues the myth of American naive innocence.

Who's, yours? No, I don't believe this should have the Islam tag, as it's not related to the content of the video. I think CP will have to accept that, but I can't help but wonder how much of this is directed at him personally.

Yes, he's disagreeable. Yes, he wants attention as much as we all do. No, he doesnt' see the world the way the majority of the Sift does.

He's the willing bogey man. He has been vilified and made the target of all our hate. We become exactly what we deplore when we deal with him, call him all sorts of names and downvote his videos without even watching them, I've seen you do it. You know you have. And I've found that he brings out our worst, the spite we pretend we don't have. The comments to him have been as abrasive and acrimonious as his.

You want angels to laud and devils to decry. This is what someone used to call "linear thinking". If you want to be surrounded by only the like-minded, the Sift is not for you. I recommend church.

Seems okay to me, provided it stays that way. Can we get a * return and send CP's top rated video back to the main page? Can we be big about it?

Conspiracy by liberals to ruin Dick Cheney

NetRunner says...

I can't believe people want to charge Saint Cheney with having committed a crime.

For god's sake, he's Obama's Islamic, Lying Cousin. I know that the media is shameless about digging into the President-Elect's family, but if the last 8 years have taught me anything, it's that the media shouldn't question anything the President does for the first 5-6 years of his administration.

Anything else would be treasonous.

Not to mention, they're charging Bush's mentally handicapped friend from Texas, Alberto Gonzales. That's just not fair! Fortunately, the man's probably already forgotten all about it, and will forget to show up at his trial, and forget to heed the subpoenas when they arrive.

It's not his fault, he was born without the ability to recall his own criminal wrongdoings!

Personally, I'm tired of all these liberal activist judges from the blue state of Texas picking on their native son President, George W. Bush.

Don't they know that when God wrote the Consitution, Article III says "Thou shalt not question Republican President's absolute authority, but thou shalt not respect Democratic President's authority at all?" I mean seriously, guys, didn't they teach you that when you were getting your law degree from Pat Robertson's Liberty University, or at your neighborhood GOPAC cell?

Seriously, it's like you all have forgotten the Golden Rule of Conservatism: take whatever you want, however you can!

Conspiracy by liberals to ruin Dick Cheney

volumptuous says...

^ Fairly simple.

Craaaaazy DA had enough with the Cheney admin, and actually found direct wrong-doing on the part of not only Cheney himself, but Gonzales personally helped thwart an ongoing investigation. So, just because the DA is a nutball partisan, doesn't mean that something very wrong didn't happen here.

And a grand jury of 23 people think there's enough evidence to bring the case before a judge.

Since it's a state issue, Bush cannot pardon anyone.

It said there was a “direct conflict of interest” because Mr Cheney had influence over federal contracts awarded to prison companies.

US grand juries weigh evidence to decide whether a case is worthy of being sent for a full trial, before issuing formal charges known as indictments.

The three-page indictment also alleges that former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales “used his position…to stop the investigations as to the wrong doings.”

The grand jury wrote that it made its decision “with great sadness,” but said they had no other choice but to indict Mr Cheney and Mr Gonzales “because we love our country.”

Several other related indictments were brought against a host of public officials in what one lawyer called a circus act by the outgoing prosecutor, Mr Guerra, who he said was seeking revenge in his final weeks in office
