Legalizing Marijuana - Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura

gwiz665 says...

If we prohibit so people don't have to make the choice, then we should prohibit high fructose corn syrup too, so people don't choose to eat some much sugar and get so fat.

We don't prohibit alcohol, because some people might become alcoholics or have some personality flaw that makes them drink beer every day, why should it be that way with weed?
>> ^NetRunner:

"When you prohibit something, it doesn't mean it's going away; it means it's going to be run by criminals."

It's also going to happen a lot less.
I'd probably smoke marijuana on a regular basis if it were legal. Since it's not, I never have any, because it's not worth the hassle and risk.

Ricky Gervais - On Fat People

You call it "food", I call it high fructose corn syrup. Seriously, I visited the US last month... even the coffee creamer was made from corn. WTF?

I had my coffee black instead.

>> ^Doc_M:
Spoco, you say that obesity is a "new thing" but what you haven't seen is that food hasn't always been as available as it is now. BR>Seriously.

What the fuck are you talking about? Red herrings and ad hominums abound in your drivel.
Are you suggesting that this video lacks merit because you're disgruntled about the decision to send more troops into Afghanistan?
Or, are you upset with the impending cost of sugar overtaking high fructose corn syrup, suggesting that once I can no longer afford to buy kool-aid, I will see clearly?
Are you talking about Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters' Kool-Aid?
Or, once I quit smoking pot I'll become as aware as you obviously think you are?

Baby Chicks dumped alive into a grinder (and other horrors)

As unfortunate and uncomfortable as this is, it's far less moving to me than say, a single iraqi child with their arm blown off. Until we've stopped indiscriminately killing people, I'm not going to worry about baby chickens getting turned into cat chow.

Factory farming is a necessary evil, there's too many people for us all to raise our own livestock. Food animals are a commodity, they're not pets, once you stop thinking of them as such, it's easy to compare what you see in videos like this with harvesting produce.

Frankly I'm more disgusted with what the corn industry has done to corn farming, relying on tax money to keep prices low enough to grow billions of tons of inedible produce that can only be used for the high fructose corn syrup that is killing so many obese people. It's a sad state of affairs that a corn farmer can't even feed their family the "food" the produce.

I would like to see some objective sources for your claims, imstellar.

Ah, khoks was the adult store, I suppose

Yeah I shopped at Kohl's yesterday - I think their pricing is weird, because you pay about half of what the item says... your culture is weird!

Today we went to a kiddie pool with bea's spawn, and I think her evil sisters are coming over tonight to nag me to death. And we're heading off to wal mart to buy hundreds of the same things.

Sodas:
Everything uses high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar - result, america is fat.
Coke is pretty much the same, a bit sweeter here I think, but mostly the same.
Dr. Pepper is pretty sweet, tastes like marzipan.
I tried a sip of bea cherry diet pepsi, I don't think I've ever tasted anything that sweet before.. it was insanely sweet. It can't be any kinds of healthy for anything.
It's pretty hot outside, but we've had an overcast these two days, so it's not really been scorching. Just really humid and warm. Everything has ACs, so inside its always pretty cool, even a bit too cool. I could imagine people getting colds from the rapid temperature switches, coming from 100F outside to freaking 50F inside.

your statement is true....one needs to take into account the actual levels of mercury.

from the abstract: The samples were found to contain levels of mercury ranging from below a detection limit of 0.005 to 0.570 micrograms mercury per gram of high fructose corn syrup. Average daily consumption of high fructose corn syrup is about 50 grams per person in the United States. With respect to total mercury exposure, it may be necessary to account for this source of mercury in the diet of children and sensitive populations.

this was one of two studies done on the subject. While I know the 2nd study found mercury in more products that contain HFCS, I'm not sure at what levels.

Since we are talking about Mercury... here's some interesting facts...
Gold mines are the nation's largest source of mercury pollution. Like all mining, separating and processing the gold creates tons of toxic metals, like lead and mercury. Nevada is home to eight of the nation's top 10 mercury polluters. Here is a list of the top 100 Some other sources: Coal Fired Power Plants, Cement Kilns, Incinerators, Chlor-alkali Production, Chemical Plants.

In 2005 the FDA did a study that showed mercury in many food products that contained High Fructose Corn Syrup (due to mercury in the caustic soda and hydrochloric acid used in the manufacture of HFCS), and the FDA did absolutely nothing about it
.

Presence of "detectable" levels is meaningless unless you name a specific concentration. Nearly everything will randomly contain at least 1 part in 10^20 of whichever stable element you want, which could be measured with a sufficiently accurate mass spectrometer.

Will a cannonball float in mercury?
