messenger says...

I'm moving this to your profile or else the troll wins.

I see what you're getting at, and it's arguable that I came on too strong, but I think you're missing that we generally know the difference between a different opinion from ours and trolling. bk33 can criticize and vent his vitriolic bile as much as any of us (I'm including myself in that category), and I don't think there's anybody here who has a problem with that. There aren't many vocal conservatives on the Sift, but there are some (Chilaxe comes to mind), and as long as they know how to carry on a discussion, there's little issue. Tempers flare, of course, but nobody seriously thinks they're trolling, just wrong, and that's great. But bk33 contributes nothing. And I don't mean he contributes nothing to my side of the argument -- I mean he leaves the place measurably worse than when he found it.

About CrushBug's comment. He's just venting. He didn't make any claims at all, let alone unsubstantiated ones, unless you mean about renaming The Government of Canada to "The Harper Government", which Harper has actually really done. Google it. So I think you're not seeing the qualitative difference between CrushBug's comments and bk33's.

Real mobs kill people. We just happen to outnumber him. We can't hurt or even remotely silence him.

In reply to this comment by frosty:
Sometimes there is such intolerance of opposition in opinion here at the Sift. When your typical liberal Sifter decries the greed of the private sector, vilifies "big business" and slams Fox News, it is hailed throughout the ranks as a battle cry, but when bobknight33 suggests the inefficiency of government-controlled industry and criticizes MSNBC, he is bombarded by the mob with accusations of naivety, not substantiating his remarks and being a "troll." For instance, take a post like CrushBug's -- "Fucking Harper. I am glad they have spent the time and money to change the name of the gov't to "The Harper Government" so once this horrible aberration of politics is voted out we can easily identify and kill this kind of evil bullshit." This is the quintessence of unsubstantiated, ad hominem attack. Yet it is met with resounding approval and hardy back slaps aplenty, buoyed up by the inertia of the throng.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Gingrich's Moon Colony

Yogi says...

I'm SORT of worried that Neil might get dragged down into too many political discussions but I'm glad he stayed above the fray here. He's dead on and he would know more about this sort of thing than any other "expert" that's usually featured on these types of shows. Speaking of which I have no idea which show this is...that guy ain't Bill O'Reilly though that much is obvious.

Just hoping Neil stays above the fray...stays frosty.

An Atheist Family Xmas - Penn Jillette White Wine in the Sun

MilkmanDan says...

Interesting, but I disagree with Penn here to a large extent.

I am an atheist, but I don't think anyone should feel like they need to exclude themselves from celebrating Christmas, or any other holiday, out of respect towards those who assign a deeper / broader / different meaning to the day.

For one thing, start with the obvious: there is no indication that the person referred to in the Bible as Jesus, if he existed at all, was born on December 25th. I think that date was assigned at the Council of Nicea in 325AD, and was chosen because it was already celebrated as the winter solstice / birth of Pagan Sun God(s, of which the biblical Jesus could arguably be included amongst). So if secularists "steal" the "deeper meaning" of Christmas from Christians, they aren't doing anything that Christians didn't do to a long history of Pagans.

I think one can easily strike a respectful middle ground without bringing that up though. Celebrate the holiday in whatever way you want, including or excluding any elements you find good or bad. Make it exclusively about being with your family, and abandon the Santa / commercial aspects if you wish. Decorate the house, talk about Santa and Reindeer, and give small or home-made presents if you prefer that. Or explain to your kids that many if not most Christians celebrate the holiday for their own religious reasons, but that you prefer to see it as a time to celebrate the family bond.

Do whatever you want. Don't go out of your way to rub it in anyone's noses, and don't give a second thought to anyone that might tell you that you are somehow perverting or desecrating the "true spirit" of the holiday if they see that your house decorations are conspicuously missing a nativity, or that your list of preferred carols replaces "Silent Night" with "Frosty the Snowman".

How to dance to dubstep

BoneyD says...

Here's the original. His name is Frostie and he's a Little Corella breed of cockatoo, native to Australia and Southern New Guinea.

Cockatoo's are very smart and actually considered a pest to agriculture, if they get used to you feeding them seed, they'll start ripping up your house if you stop or forget. Certainly very Australian qualities .

BP Refuses To Let Journalists Film Coastline

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Uh - the Coast Guard works for the U.S. Government. They don't take orders from BP. If the Coast Guard is not allowing journalists into an area, then the responsibility falls on the U.S. Government - not BP. The only reason journalists could possibly be turned back is if the government was wanting it to be that way.

Now - BP may be involved in the motivation for the government to be doing this (though there is no evidence of that beyond hearsay at this point). However - considering the political blowback Obama's administration is now getting for thier weak, slow response to the event - it is entirely possible that it is the OBAMA administration that is the one engaging in censorship so as to minimize the impact.

Consider... Obama has a notorious, even infamous, habit of stonewalling the pres and suppressing information. I'd make a list - but it would take too long. Needless to say he has a LONG history of hiding away facts that are inconvenient to his agenda. He has a frosty relationship (at best) with the press corps. His history as a community activist was oriented towards suppressing/hiding information he doesn't like, while propogandizing information he wants to be talked about. That's about the only thing Obama knows how to do well as he's a dundering incompetent at just about everything else.

BP certainly has a vested interest in minimizing its damage here to be sure. But they don't control the Coast Guard. Who does? The Obama administration. Ultimately - who is responsible for the USCG? Obama. He's the one you need to be pointing fingers at here. BP is probably more than happy to be complicit, but they aren't the ones giving the CG its orders.

People shot in the face with cupcakes (Slo-mo)

Seric says...

YT: The Johnny Cupcakes Suitcase Tour stop at Kamp Grizzly was epic. Johnny brought a great crowd, his limited edition tour gear and the inspiration for Kamp's Cupcake Cannon. Portland's Kamp Grizzly developed a steam-punk style pneumatic cupcake cannon and set the stage for eating frosty delights at 120psi. The blasting buffet was documented in at 700fps coming off the Phantom HD Gold. As the evening shook down, cupcake enthusiasts continued to step in front of the cannon and camera. Some shaking in their boots, others perched in zen-like states, ALL were covered in delicious frosting, spongy cake, and showered in a mist of sprinkles.

Tea Party Reasoning

rougy says...

>> ^frosty:

Tea Party Reasoning? Typical sleazy political tactic -- take the behavior of a nut on the fringe of a movement and project that behavior on the movement at large. You know, every Democrat is an adulterer just like John Edwards.

The Tea Party is a fringe movement.

And the man's reasoning is, probably, 90% in keeping with that of its membership, except he's a little more gung-ho and hostile about expressing it.

What did he say that the average Tea Party member would disagree with?

Tea Party Reasoning

Drachen_Jager says...

Even the so called "reasonable" tea partiers are pretty whacked out man. I have yet to see one anywhere who even resembles a rational human being. Who would you point to as a mainstream/non lunatic fringe TPer?

Nerdist Podcast with Adam Savage of Mythbusters (Blog Entry by lucky760)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I heard that interview with Pollack- and was thinking of checking his podcast out too - as the interview was funny. The only thing that put me off is that he literally used "literally" to mean figuratively about 7 times in the interview- I'm not sure I could take that. >> ^lucky760:

I'm right there with you. I enjoy the things they discuss on Nerdist (e.g., the conversation with Drew Carey), but it feels sort of impotent because it's delivered like you're just eavesdropping on a conversation rather than being presented a production. I'm really surprised it's #6 among all podcasts and #1 in the comedy category above Ricky Gervais and Adam Carolla, but he does have a bit of a built-in podcast-centric geek audience.
ACP is always my first podcast of the day. The Bob Zmuda interview was great, but was cut too short due to the double booking.
Have you listened to Kevin Pollak's Chat Show? I discovered it thanks to his interview on Carolla. He has some really quality stuff. I also listen to the Parent Experiment, Frosty Heidi and Frank, After Hours with Heidi and Frank, the Pretty Good Podcast, and Loveline.
I haven't heard of the Marketplace of Ideas, but I'll give them a go.
