Working Miniature V8 Paper Engine

Khufu says...

a real engine just an air pump. The combustion is what gives the air the force needed to move the cylinder.

This is the same thing, but because it's paper it only needs a bit of forced air, so if you were a mouse, you could put this in your tiny mouse car and work a little pump to drive around....

very impressive!

No it isn't.
It's a small paper box with paper-folded valves that make an engine sound when an exterior energy source is applied.

Blacksmith Debunks 9-11 Myth

newtboy says...

I was disappointed that he didn't use his forge to prove how a blast furnace takes a fuel that burns at one temperature and with forced air added, raises that temperature significantly. He easily could have rigged his furnace to work on jet fuel, then just put a thermometer in it and showed them it goes to 2500deg.
That said, he still should have kept the temperature to 1500, since that's the temperature he was debunking, then done a second explanation to 'prove' that it doesn't matter that they're wrong about 1500 being too cool (even though it still bends at that temp), because the 1500 deg limit is a pure fantasy and fallacy from people who don't understand fire.

Yeh I anticipated the same stupid counter argument when he said it was 300 degrees over!

Best I've seen on the comments to that vid was someone suggesting that the molten metal seen dripping in some 9/11 vids could not have been aluminium because "Molten Aluminium is silver".

Derp!

Spider's heart beating

Seric says...

>> ^dapper:

Thanks for the clarification. i love that people on here know about this stuff....
>> ^oritteropo:
Spider respiration isn't like ours, it's based on diffusion rather than forcing the air through like we do.... or, in other words, no.
I felt quite sorry for the poor little fellow.
>> ^dapper:
Is it possible that the movement is a consequence of it breathing rather than the heart beat?

I know some insects (and spiders) pulse their abdomen to force air through their spiracles (little breathing holes on their underside), similarly to the way we use our diaphragm and intercostal muscles to draw air in and force it out again. Reading about it, it seems spiders tend to mix and match their breathing systems, depending on the species - but only "more advanced species" use spiracles"

Spiders hearts are located on the back of the abdomen. See this picture of a tarantula for example: http://i.imgur.com/7kexx.jpg (elongated yellow thing). So it could be it's heartbeat.

TL;DR - It could be breathing or a heartbeat. But due to spider anatomy, heartbeat would appear more likely.

Man detained: speeding because his dog is dieing (Pets Talk Post)

Arsenault185 says...

I think the officer handled everything very professionally. If the owner was that serious about his pet, perhaps he should have taken his negligent ass down to the red cross (they usually do it) and learned how to preform CPR / doggie Heimlich so that he could have saved his dogs life without putting people t risk. I'll tell you what works (on smaller dogs)- wrap your mouth around your dogs nose and blow. you'll force air into his lungs, and back up through his mouth. With any luck, the foreign object will come popping out. Even if your dog isn't choking, its still fun to do. Yeah, this guy was a moron. I have 2 dogs (well I have one my wife has another) and I care very much for them. Would I drive like a douche bag to save them? No. Would I do everything I could possibly do to get them to an emergency vet if I couldn't handle it? yes. That means speeding, but not criminal speeding. the 8-10 rule would hae been fine, because like payback pointed out, speeding doesn't actually save you a whole lot of time.

Traffic Control in North Korea

rembar says...

I wonder if this might be some kind of propaganda, for which side I couldn't tell ya. But from what I've heard from travelers to NK, one would be lucky to see that many cars pass by in a year, let alone a few minutes. Whaddya think? Although I suppose it is possible that there's some very busy location that does get a lot of traffic.

P.S. Somebody find that video of the Air Force air traffic controller for comparison.

P.P.S. Where can I buy her?
